    Two killed as vans crash

    The Nation June 5, 2012 1:00 am

Two transport vans collided on Rom Khlao Road in Bangkok's Min Buri district yesterday at 5.20am, resulting in two deaths - a van driver and his 12yearold son. Sixteen other people were injured.

The deceased driver's van was heading towards Lat Krabang, transporting people wishing to make merit in Kanchanaburi. Police found it collided with a second van heading towards Min Buri that was forced to swerve to avoid hitting a trailer truck that cut in front of it. The second van, whose driver was injured, flew across a road island into the path of the first.

Meanwhile in Kanchanaburi's Tha Moung district, a threebogie train with 100 Thai and foreign visitors crashed into the rear of a sixwheel truck transporting 50 cooking gas tanks yesterday at 10am near Wat Khao Din, on a crossroad with no barrier. The truck driver, 28, was injured.

The crash resulted in gas leaks, which prompted officials to release gas in damaged tanks and light a fire while five fire engines sprayed water to contain the flames.

The sooner they limit the speed on these death traps, and make the drivers accountable the better

And this type of lane-changing should be heavily penalized.

I've seen tbe public commuter vans on the Chonburi Expressway in and out of Bangkok over the last month or so and they have made considerable progress slowing them there. Sadly elsewhere they're still as reckless.

Agreed. After the publicity of several bad accidents a few months ago, it seemed like the drivers had been ordered to slow down.

Just recently they have started reverting to their usual driving habits. Time is money..

^ Not ordered to slow down. The police cameras have been picking them off and so far fines range from 500 B to 2,000 B. Vans are slowing down due to tickets not safety concerns.

^Obviously it does not work as the pictures reflect. there is no telling what kind of reaction will occur when Thai drivers meet obstacles coming at them from unknown locations. We all have noticed that reaction time of Thai's ie: reflex actions seem to take longer than the average simian. this said as I wait at the traffic light for the Thai drivers ahead of me to react to the green light to go.

Driving the highways of Thailand is always a crap shoot. Remember always expect the unexpected.

Very likely the second van was driving like a lunatic, made an error and swerved across lanes/central divide thus causing the accident; should be done for manslaughter...

I know this sounds bad, but i'm glad it was the driver and sadly his son and not the passengers.

These idiots are fuckers along Ram Intra.

Fair point. There aren't many police cameras around out of Bangkok though.

Would the Thaipassengers be willing to pay higher fares so that higher quality drivers could be hired, or drivers paid by the hour instead of by how many trips they make?
