Three die, 20 hurt in 18-vehicle crash

An 18-vehicle pileup on a major highway in Saraburi's Kaeng Koi district on Wednesday morning resulted in three deaths and 20 injuries, police said.

Saraburi police officer Pongpichit Suthamrat said the accident occurred in front of the TPI cement factory on the Mittraphap highway.

Pol Lt Col Pongpichit said a trailer detached from a truck and a following truck was unable to stop in time and crashed into the trailer.

A series of collisions followed as speeding vans, pickup trucks and sedans ran into the mounting wreckage.

Three people were confirmed to have been killed - a woman travelling in a pickup and two men in a passenger van.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Work crews have cleared the scene of the accident and road has reopened.

Two options today in Sara-buri, death by traffic accident or blown up by fireworks. the double whammy of Thai bad luck.

    Indeed, it is.

More so when involving a three-ring motorway circus.

An accident involving 18 cars on Mittaparb Road in Saraburi province on Wednesday killed three and injured some 20 others, police said.

The accident took place in front of TPI cement factory on the inbound road in Kaeng Khoi district at about 1.30pm.

According to police, the trailer of a speeding truck became loose from its coupling causing it to accidentally disconnect. The cars following were unable to stop and slammed into the trailer.

A total of 18 vehicles including pickups and minivans were involved in the tragic accident. Three were killed instantly while the 20 injured were sent to Kaeng Khoi and Saraburi Hospitals.

Police had to seal off the road to facilitate the transfer of the victims and the injured.

....... and dark. That's a bit of road worth avoiding if you can. If I'm heading north I always go via Suphan Buri. The road is a lot safer as there are less trucks and the scenery is an improvement. The few extra miles involved are worth it .

Oh very seldom is there an accident without a minivan being involved. Why do people travel in these death traps, with morons driving them.

Yes, Hwy. 340 is a good road probably due to K. Banharn but if one is headed say from Ang Thong cutting over to Korat, the shortest distance takes you thru Saraburi, correct? There was a lot of road construction going on last time I came thru there too.

A combination of often heavy traffic (and many heavy vehicles too), gradient, bends, and (not least) Thai driving make that a pretty dangerous stretch of road.

20 years ago in Perth exactly the same thing happened to my mates parents. They where returning home after a hockey tournament in Adelaide when a truck towing a trailer with a bob cat on top suddenly detached from the truck and hit there car head on instantly killing both parents. Difference being it was traveling in the opposite direction.

Fok, whats the chances of That ?

The guy got charged with man slaughter as he did not have his safety chains attached.

I am sure that road conditions and the vehicle types etc are contributing factors to this horrible accident but surely the fact that the trailer detached itself possibly because of some mechanical failure or human error is the root cause and hopefully where the consequent investigation will go. Not sure any heads will roll over it though...probably be put down to a freak of nature!
