Four Tourists Killed, Phuket Holiday Coast Toll Soars: Minibus Driver Flees

PHUKET: Four Phuket tourists have have been killed in a Saturday evening collision on the main road north of Phuket - a pileup that brought the total toll in that area to 14 dead in three horror smashes in just over a month.

Five more tourists have been taken to hospital, some to Phuket, and three are in a critical condition.

The driver of the tourist minivan is believed to have fled on foot amid the carnage.

Killed were three women and a man. They were identified as two Russians, a Turk and a Ukraine citizen, according to police.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision, Chamnan Dabkeaw, 25, waited at the scene as paramedics and police arrived.

He was carrying crates of fish off Phuket. The tourists were returning to Phuket after a day trip.

The crash occurred about 6.20pm near Paita, a short drive off Phuket.

The latest tourist tragedy is likely to bring to a head concerns about safety on the popular holiday coast roads north of Phuket, especially between Phuket airport and destinations in Khao Lak, a short drive north.

Five people - including four young Swedish tourists - died in a horrific crash on February 1 on the road north of Phuket.

They were heading off from Phuket to continue their dive holiday and were killed instantly, along with the Thai driver of their rented car, when a fish truck lost control, became airborne, and crushed them.

Another five people travelling on a local bus that was clipped by an overtaking ''local taxi'' BMW were killed on February 18 as the bus returned from a funeral on Phuket.

The bus ran off the road into trees, injuring 24 passengers, some seriously.

The third mass fatality on the same stretch of roads will elevate concern about safety standards among minibus drivers and unregistered taxi drivers to the highest level.

The road north of Phuket has sections where the highway is divided and appears safe and other sections where the road narrows and twists.

The crashes - all in Phang Nga province, north of Phuket - appear to have mostly happened on sections where high speed, not road design, is the problem.

Virtually no controls exist in the Phuket region to educated the drivers of minibuses and local taxis about safety standards.

Authorities admit there are no controls governing taxis and minibuses on Phuket. No formal registration and no training conditions are imposed.

Enforcement of speed limits is nonexistent.

In Mission Hospital on Phuket tonight were Lazina Svetlanarat, 28, .Labeznaya Galina, 56, Serkan Tinc, 33, Medvedeva Nadejda, 59, and Sepdakor Alexandaras, 54.

These types of accidents are definitely on the increase since cars became more easily available to the average Thai.

Couple that to the almost unenforced speed limit and road rules, along with Thai style driving licence tests, and a recipe for greater road carnage is in place.

I make it a point now NOT to travel by any form of bus, mini or other in Thailand.
I either use a SUV, train or plane and a taxi to or from the airport.

That is a very scary observation, with Yingluck knocking 100,000 baht off the price of new cars for new drivers.

I know someone who has a Thai missus who wants a little car, the scary thing is she has no license, but told him she would buy one.

Thais shouldn't be given control of anything but buffalo and cart.

They just can't grasp how to use such Western concepts as motorized vehicles.

It seems to me they can't grasp the simple concept of mortality. They don't seem to get the idea that other peoples lives are just as important as their own. And that driving like a f**king moron could lead to people getting killed.

This is the first time I've heard anyone else say it, but yes, the driving and traffic have gotten even worse in the last 5 years. Near Sattahip are highways 331 and 332, both high speed roads with a single lane in each direction. It's much more common now to have to move off the road onto the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision from some moron passing on the other side than it was 5 years ago.

^ and yes, the fish trucks coming from and going to Sattahip Harbor are among the worse.

Place a vehicle in the hands of an uneducated, unqualified driver with all the social development of a reclusive gibbon hampered by a low IQ level congenitally determined by inbreeding and malnutrition and this can be the likely consequence.

That the humanoid driver, he can't be described in any other way, fled the scene simply confirms the thesis that his race is incapable of rational thought but survives purely by instinct.

    Savages, pure and simple.

What else can be expected when you give chimpanzees a bunch of car keys.I've
no sympathy for the majority of casualties when it only involves Thai's,as they
never learn or change from their mistakes. This is Thailand, whatever that means. The problem is, they seem to be taking more tourists into the afterlife with them.

The accident wasn't That bad- except that four people were killed. The damage to the van doesn't suggest a mega collision, rather a side swipe. How many lives could be saved if these vans were fitted with seat belts, and wearing them was enforced?

And that seems to be a common trait.....fleeing the scene.

How is it that the driver always seems to survive where there are a few fatalities?

Was in Nissan garage the other day and there were 5 Nissan March in there all with some sort of damage. This is a common car for first time drivers (female).

It appears that the fish truck driver knew he was in the right.

Seat belts would certainly have helped reduce the death toll, and I'm shocked at how often Thais drive without seatbelts while frantically chatting on their cell phones.

It took me weeks to get my Thai lady to get the seat belt on automatically as she got into the driver's seat.
It took nearly three months to get her to stop to take a phone call on the road!

When she was driving there used to be a blind panic as the phone rang (she had three going, all in her bag, each dedicated to her different job sections!!!

I'm wondering if the van driver who ran was on the phone at the time, very possible, in fact, more than likely.
His phone would tell if he was, maybe that's why he did a runner, to dump the phone.

Easy to blame Thai people and compare them to monkeys.
But, it's the police and whoever would take responsibility for the poor drivers test that are the blame.
Why should folks abide by rules (like staying in a lane) if no one ever stops them for not abiding by the law? (providing they know the rules in the 1st place)
Don't blame the monkeys. Blame those that want to keep them so.

With a whole selection of victims ,all from various countries, this is another far reaching "bad news story". If they opted to punish "flee from scene" drivers more publicly and more severely it may stop this unforgivable practice.

Too true, 90 guests viewing a minute ago.

Some of them are bound to be family, friends or victims of this latest crash.

To all of you concerned, my condolences, for death is not easy to accept, but the dead now sleep, may they be in peace and may peace fall softly upon you too.

Ah yes, stopping the "fleeing the scene" would undoubtedly solve the problem.

    What was the problem again?
