    Grammy terminates Sek Loso's contract

    The Nation December 21, 2011 1:00 am

Just a day after Sek Loso broke his silence about his damaging drug scandal, he learned that his contract with the GMM Grammy music label had been terminated.

The company's senior executive vice president Krij Thomas officially told the press yesterday that GMM Grammy had terminated its contract with Seksai "Sek" Sukpimai. The termination of the contract, which still had three years to go, marks the end of a 16-year relationship between the musician and the music label.

GMM Grammy held an urgent press conference yesterday after Sek admitted in an interview on Monday that he had indeed used drugs.

Krij said his company had strict regulations in terms of drug abuse. "From now on, he is no longer a Grammy member, and after this, it is between him and the Office of Narcotics Control Board."

The executive, who was a former musician and songwriter in the 1980s, said that Grammy had told all its artists about the company's drug-free policy.

Seksan has been with Grammy since his band Loso's first album, "Lo Society", debuted in 1996. The band broke up in 2003 and the musician came up with two solo albums: "7 August" in 2003 and "Black & White" in 2006.

However, now that his contract with Grammy has been terminated, the company will not be promoting his latest single "Sek Love Song", though he will still continue earning from his music copyright, which covers songwriting, producing, singing and arrangement.

In the interview at home on Monday night, Sek also said that Grammy owed him an apology, though he did not elaborate. He also told reporters about instances of him being stalked and his phone being tapped.

Krij dismissed Sek's claims, saying: "We aren't that kind of the company. He might have imagined it himself." When reporters asked the Grammy executive if the firm would at least apologise, he said Sek should speak to the firm directly.

The "Sek scandal" started about two weeks ago in what looked like dirty laundry being washed in public when his ex-wife posted a picture of him using drugs on her Facebook page. The image then started getting widely circulated on social media, though neither Grammy nor the artist reacted to the news.

The music company had said earlier that it had tried contacting the artist. But that didn't happen, and Sek agreed to an interview, which sparked another round of controversies. Apparently both parties have yet to meet face to face.

In his interview, Sek admitted that he did use drugs and confirmed that the photograph posted by his former wife was him, though he was not aware that she had taken photographs of him while they were on holiday in Prague.

"As an artist, I must use [drugs] but I strongly believe I can manage it," he said, though he was quick to advise young people and his fans to pick his better qualities and not use drugs.

"I am strong and that is why I can handle it," Sek said, as he tried justifying his drug use by naming some foreign artists who are also allegedly drug users.

Though he would not be tied down to promising that he would go for rehabilitation, Sek did vaguely mention that he would handle the problem himself. He also said he would never lead an anti-drugs campaign, as it would not be suitable.

The artist also admitted that his former wife's claim of domestic violence was true and said he never wanted to divorce the mother of three until she pleaded for the third time. "I believe I can handle my family problems and from now on I will take good care of my family."

Despite his damaging scandal, some fans are still providing support on Sek's Facebook page, yet many are also slamming him for his behaviour.

Young artists, in particular, are worried that Sek's comments linking the music industry with drug abuse might damage their reputations.

Such a blanket notion is not good as people might assume we [the artists] depend on drugs to produce works," Thai violinist Paye Srinarong tweeted.

Singer/dermatologist Smith Arayaskul also tweeted: "Drugs are never needed by anybody and there is no such thing as 'we can use drugs and control it'."

Singer Yong Armchair said a genuine artist can get a high without using drugs.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

A Junkie Rock Star And Ethical Standards

    UPDATE : 17 December 2011

Since the photos of famous rocker Seksan Sukphimai, better known by his stage name, Sek Loso, allegedly doing drugs were posted on the Facebook page of his ex-wife, the public has paid very close attention to the issue as it poses challenges to personal conscience, social responsibility, ethical standards of Thai society and the sanctity of the law.

Sek Loso posted a message on his own Facebook page, saying he is ready to“face the music”, as if admitting to doing drugs. However, it looks like National Police Chief Police General Priewphan Damapong was defending the singer when he said Sek Loso may not be liable for any wrongdoing because the pictures alone cannot prove whether he abused drugs. Moreover, the police chief sidestepped the point by saying that, instead, Sek's ex-wife could have violated the Computer Crime Act by distributing pictures that promote drug abuse.

Similarly, Paiboon Damrongchaitham, the president of GMM Grammy, the record label which the rock star works for, said in a press conference that he is willing to forgive Sek if he admits wrongdoing and apologizes. Paiboon's stance apparently goes against public sentiment. The students' behavior monitoring network in Udonthani Province called on the singer to cancel his planned gigs until there is more clarity about the issue, saying that as a public figure, Sek's ethical standards and responsibility have to be higher than ordinary citizens.

In the past, show producers, agencies and music labels all had strict requirements for their artists against becoming involved with drugs. Artists found to do drugs were usually suspended from work or banned. They were prosecuted and subjected to public condemnation. Many saw their careers come to a premature end, like former actress Kulanat “Namfon” Kulpreeyawat and former dance idol Touch Na Takuatung. Even if today their agencies didn’t ban them, the ill-fated celebrities are still not accepted by society.

Therefore, the case of Sek Loso should not be treated differently. If the rocker is found to have been doing drugs, he is liable for punishment so that his fan clubs and teenagers do not imitate him. Everyone must exercise proper conscience and be socially responsible. A celebrity status should not warrant any exceptions.

Anti-drug office gives Sek a week to talk and enter rehab - The Nation

Anti-drug office gives Sek a week to talk and enter rehab

    MONTHIEN INTHAKET
    THE NATION December 23, 2011 1:00 am

The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has summoned rock star Seksan "Sek Loso" Sukpimai to give information about his alleged drug abuse within a week and join a drug rehabilitation programme - or face six months in jail and/or a Bt10,000 fine.

ONCB chief Pol General Adul Saengsingkaew said that by not showing up, Sek could be regarded as failing to co-operate with the authorities. The ONCB would then file a police complaint and get Din Daeng police to issue a summons for Sek, Adul explained. If Sek still did not show up, an arrest warrant would be issued and he could be jailed and/or fined.

Adul's comments came after the ONCB met yesterday with 20 entertainment companies, including Sek's former employer GMM Grammy, to have them sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to ensure their artists set a good example for the public and stay away from drugs. The eight-point MoU includes a two-year ban on publicity for any addicted artist, a job contract prohibiting drug abuse, a new opportunity for the rehabilitated artist, and an award ceremony for artists that set good examples.

GMM Grammy senior executive vice president Krij Thomas said that the dispute between Sek and GMM Grammy ended following the termination of Sek's contract, and the company wishes Sek well in his drug-rehabilitation treatment. As for Sek's future with Grammy, he said the company would wait until Sek fully recovers before commenting about it.

Rocker Yet to Report for Drug Probe

    UPDATE : 28 December 2011

The deputy secretary general of the Narcotics Control Board discloses that singer Sek Loso will appear before officials according to a summons after he publicly admitted to using narcotics following the release of a picture of him taking drugs.

News about singer Seksan Sukpimai or Sek Loso has been making the headlines in the past two weeks after a photo of him taking drugs surfaced on his ex-wife's Facebook page.

He later came out to admit he usef narcotics but denied assaulting his ex-wife as claimed by her.

His press conference led to his music label GMM Grammy canceling his contract and his threat to sue them.

The Narcotics Control Board has also called him in for questioning and threatened jail term if he does not show up.

Deputy Secretary-General of the Narcotics Control Board Narong Ratananukul said Sek has been given seven days to report himself and tomorrow is the deadline.

At around 3 P.M. yesterday, a man who claimed he is Sek's lawyer contacted the office and said Sek will show up today.

A large number of journalists have already camped out at the Narcotics Control Board to wait for the famous singer.

They have also tried to contact his manager Pornpimon Theppichai, who is Sek's girlfriend, to ask whether Sek will be willing to seek rehabilitation from his drug addiction but she refused to comment on the issue.

^if I smoked weed in Amsterdam and then came to Thailand with no weed on me totally clean, I'd still be in possession if it was in my blood stream.

Not sure which drugs he was taking but I'm pretty sure if he's not totally clean "in-country" then he's been in possession of controlled substances in the kingdom.

I think it's just another establishment swing at the non-establishment types. His messages and songs were never appreciated by hi-so Thais, nor were Tata Young's (whom they tried to destroy through their compliant media, painting her as a low-life daughter of an American alcoholic). Seasoned observers note that a thai-farang marriage is "good" if the husband is Thai versus Thai-Farang marriages where the husband is farang. Carrabow is another example of hi-so meddling against Thai performing artists. He was - and remains - a very popular (folk) singer who inspired and empowered the 'prai'. One of the military right-wing dictators chased him out of Thailand to the Philippines in the 70s or 80s where he stayed for around 10 years I think. Can't have ordinary people in Thailand thinking they are the same as hi-so now can we - that would bring the flame a little too close to the wax figurines.
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

Could well be all of what you're saying. Then again, it could just be a case of hte artist blatantly admitting to using drugs in a country with draconian anti drug laws. I mean, what were they supposed to say?

When's the last time you saw a hi-so daughter or son facing the music on drug charges "INSIDE" Thailand? They are doing mounds of cocaine, ecstacy and other drugs at parties here all the time - even qite openly in the hi-so nightclubs. But those places aren't the ones that get raided.

He had a long interview in the Sunday Post. He must be pretty drugged out because he mentioned his second home in London, and how loves to take his son sightseeing there. Mentioned his son was moved by seeing the place John Lennon was shot and killed. Hmmmm.......

Sek is being brutally honest instead of lying about it.

Yep. He sounds a bit of a wanker, tbh. He should have just denied the drugs allegations as well.
