Western Australia Thai consulate closure and message from the staff.

    Hi Mark,

The Royal Thai Consulate General - Perth Western Australia will close 18th October 2010. Brigadier Jamieson will be retiring. After this date all matters will be handled by the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra.

We don't have email contact for all our regulars so could you please spread the word for us.

Should you need to renew your visa we will need to see you by no later than Tuesday 12th October 2010. Please ensure that you let us know ahead of time so we can book you in on the diary. As you can imagine if you could all space it out a bit we would be grateful.

Yvonne and I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks we have enjoyed working with you all, especially all our repeat ex pats, we were talking the other day and Yvonne has been here 7 1/2 years and I have been here 5 years. The time seems to have flown by.

We would like to take this opportunity to say Thanks we have enjoyed meeting you all, and hearing from you throughout the years, we have seen many marriages, children born, houses/condos built and businesses ventured. We have made many friends and hope to get up there for a holiday sometime soon.

If we don't see you before we close, we hope you have a Merry Xmas, Happy New Year and prosper throughout the ensuing years.

    Our best regards

    Naomi Stannett Yvonne Powell

That's just great. You can't get a non O multi anywhere in Asia even though I am married with a child and have been here 10 years now on and off working and now the one place where I could go reasonably cheap (and where I am from originally-family and friends visit) is closing. Is there no plans to replace it? One consulate in Canberra for the whole country that can issue a visa? Crazy.

What are my options now? Can't get one in Sing, HK, malaysia and now Perth so WTF? can't do border runs either. This really foks me up

Well thats a bit of a supprise, although, having said that, last time i went up there they where charging for visas when free elsewhere, i opted for free one like most it seems, don't like to see people lose there jobs though, remember them to be very helpfull and informative.

They'd give a visa to anyone, so they'll be sorely missed.

Brisbane can, but it's not much help. I've heard Sri Lanka is a easy option, but the thought of a few days in Colombo isn't very appealing. Oh, and Ghangzhaou (or however it's spelt today) consulate are supposed to be helpful too.

Brisbane is your best option now. It's a longer trip and a more expensive flight but you can pretty much get the same standard of service as in Perth.
I too can't believe that it's not being taken over by new people!
This is big news and it's going to upset a large number of expats.

Colombo ain't that bad. If you don't like it there then move about, it's only for a day or so. I liked the place, but that was before the Tsunami hit.

WTF are you supposed to do if you work away and come back here to be with your family for longer than 28 days at a time? They have made it pretty hard to get a multi Non O for sure. I still can't figure out why Sing, KL or Hk won't give you one, I got all the docs that say I have a family here, not asking too bloody much is it? What do Perth people do to get a multi entry visa then? As always it says a lot about trying to live here.....

As Terry said there's no mention of imminent closure on their website. One would think that said closure only being about 6 weeks away they would want to let people know about it.
Emailing the consulate might clarify the situation.

I pick up my multi tomorrow and will suss out with the girls exactly whats going down.

The answer will be : Send your passport off to Sydney and hope they give you one.

The great thing about Perth was that you could talk personally with the girls and they'd make a decision based on your appearance, attitude and reasons.

Foked now as the face to face interaction has gone down the shitter not without saying the extra time required to fuk around and wait for it to return from foking Sydney.

Quite a large Thai community in Perth as well.

The dumb thing about it is its only closing because Aussy consulate general dude is retiring ?

I mean big foking deal, the two girls that work there are long term employees and they have just been thrown down the shitter because this guys retiring.

Makes no sense at all. Any person in Perth that wants a visa has to now send there passport to either Sydney or Canberra which is a week turn around at best if your lucky.

    Versus two days in Perth.

    Sucks hard mate.

Don't believe it for a moment. The very reason that the Thai government introduced the issuance of free visas was to put pressure on the small consulates to close down. The government sees these places as nothing more than visa mills.

You say you are married to a Thai national. In that case you can go to the immigration and extend your 15/30 day stamp for an extra 60 days.

Didn't know you could do that cheers. Is it possible to do that 4 times a year then? I'm only back a month at a time, I guess VOA's are the way to go.

The Consul is a lawyer. If he retires that must be the end of the office space.
The women working there are great people. I got a triple entry last week.

Apparently you can do it as many times as you wish. It costs the standard B1,900 per extension. I only found out about this from another thread a month or so ago.

Will look for a link now.

Shouldn't be an issue. All you do is send it to the one in the closest country.

Some say yes, some say no.

If you're only back a month at a time, VE for 30 days on arrival by air, and can extend this for 7 days anyway (1,900b)? When you say 'a month', it's presumably less than 37 days.?
