    90-day residence reporting

For those of you that bother with this.

Just a heads-up that at Chiang Mai Tor Mor, they've now decided that as well as reporting your place of residence every 90 days on form TM47, you also need to provide photocopies of your passport picture page, your last entry stamp, your arrival/departure card and ...wait for it...your little stub from your last TM47.

What the fuck do they do with all these identical photocopies they must get month after month? I mean how many times does your passport picture page change? Once in 10 years? Yet they want a fresh copy every three months? I find it totally baffling.

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

If you observe them closely, the Thai office worker / officer does need a few bits of A4 to sit and shuffle / fiddle with whilst they are dealing with you. If they dont have any papers to shuffle / fiddle with they feel less important. IMHO this is the reason for the myriad of photocopy requests.

Or they've all got shares in photocopy paper companies and/or the photocopy shop behind the office...

If you've been in Thailand for a period of 90 days (regardless of the kind of visa you have), you have to report where you live to immigration. Then 90 days later you have to do it again, and so on for ever and ever. If you leave the country and return, the clock gets reset back to zero and you start counting again.

I should add that going to immigration to renew your visa once a year doesn't count - this 90-day residence reporting thing is entirely separate from your visa.

If it is more convenient for you, you can also mail in the reporting form along with copies of passport, entry card, and last reporting slip. Should mail within seven days of your reporting date.

I think it is a pain having to go to immigration.
Why can't you go to your local amphur police station and report?
When aliens had to report in the UK that is what they did.

I guess it is needed to identify yourself.
The TM47 has been filled in with your handwriting so quite possibly they get a few where they cannot read the name.

I'm not sure if you've missed the point or I have. Once they have one copy of my passport, why do they need another one?

^Hey, BG, you get a 10 day grace period. After that, it's under the discretion of the immigration officer to fine you 2000 baht or not.

Yes, there was a reported instance back in 1972 when an immigration officer decided not to fine the applicant who was waiting in front of the immigration office at 0500 hours on the morning of the 11th grace period day.

    It made international news headlines.

    He was fired that afternoon.

I think the enforcement is spotty.
I have a elderly friend here on the o-a visa for the past 5 years, has never reported.
No word is ever mentioned at renewal time.

When I start with the retirement visa I'm not reporting squat.

i don't mind as it only takes 5 minutes and I take the opportunity to do stuff at the central airport plaza every 3 months which is right next door to the CM immigration.

but I do know people that don't bother and it doesn't appear to effect renewals.

I renewed my retirement visa a couple of weeks ago, and was told 90 dayers also have to bring along proof of residence in the form of tabian bahn, lease, or hotel bill...they'll be taking blood samples next!

i believe that's true for some immigration spots.

CM have said they are not necessary 'yet'.

good job since i always sign under my old address because it's easier to remember than my new one.

Our local office hasalso askedfor the copies in the OP for first time,I guess as others opined they got shares in copy shops.
An old Thai Prof 20 years here gave me some excellent advice many years ago when I was anewbie amazed frustrated and dazed by the snakes and laddres of the bureaucracy.
If you ask WHY YOU WILL GET a headache!
Since then I dream of the million other reincarnations we will all have and whether I'll have same wife in same queue for same stamp.
Of course the true insult is your time has zero value,I must have been a lawyer in a previous life to be wading through this but then its happy hour at Uncle Tom's!
Just see all this nonsense as a tiny price to pay for joys of LOS have you ever dealt with OZ France not to mention Finnish paperwork Siam is smooth as a buttered bargirl
