In the end it depends on your level of laziness. If you are a like myself, the sort of person who would make a Sloth look like it has ADHD, who avoids contact with any govt department as much as humanely possible and has the cash. Use an agent. I have spent a total of 8 minutes in immigration obtaining and renewing my yearly visas. I do mine in Pattaya because I have a good agent. While there I spend a few days sampling the culinary delights of the American/Brit ex pat communities, whilst admiring S.A's cerulean waters on pattaya's sandy shores before taking myself back to Cow mansion and the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.

Reading this thread reminded me that my wife turns 50 at the end of the month so we both now can get a retirement visa via an agent.....but we'll probably just stay here.

A Brit resturaunt owner I know here uses a Maha Sarakham based agent every year for his marriage visa. The agent takes care of everything including the 400k in the bank. Brit and missus show up once at immigration office to sign various forms and walk away with visa.

This agent operates in several Isaan provinces. Not sure about Korat but next I see the Brit will get agent contact number.

    Cost is 17k baht.

All of this produces a question which is highly interesting to me .
Have any of you ever had an application for a Non-Imm 'O' turned down ? Whether for Spouse or Retirement ??

And if you have had a Refusal ....... on what grounds was your application denied ?

I did'nt think agents did marriage visa's simply because you have to be there in person, i recently did a marriage visa 1st March in Jom Tien, it took about 50 minutes all told, and it was banged out as usual, in fact the bank letter took nearly as long and we got there early before the bank opened, the wife took care of all the paperwork, bless her, so when we got to "the Dragon's den" she went through all the paperwork as usual so i was relieved when i saw the paper clips come out it meaning they were excepted.
Home visits took no more than 10 minutes had a visit every year since it started next year will try for the retirement extension through an agent, at 85 yrs old it's getting a bit much now, need an agent to cover the extra 400,000 needed plus the running around required!
First post so hope it's not too long winded and is of some help!

Its not often that I completely agree with Mr Stumpy but his posts 8,19,23'25'and 27 are in my opinion probably the best advice he has given on here.
However I think he has failed to understand the common man's concerns and fears. I think Wasp is probably a little reticent about throwing himself off the cliff into the unknown that is moving to Thailand.
If you have the full support of your wife and have full confidence in her ability and willingness to help you, which may require standing up to the authority of the Immigration Officer/s, then it may be not so daunting, you're a lucky man in this regard Stumpy.

I have made many mistakes with Visa over the past 24 years both in Thailand (for me) and in Australia (for my wife) but was able to work through it all and come out the other end alive, maybe a little scarred but I survived.

I just recently did my annual extension and needed it to be expedited as I wanted to return to Australia. I asked the guy at the Buriram Office if he could make it happen more quickly and his reply was that he didn't have the "power". My wife called the big off ice Khon Kaen and it happened plus it didn't require any exchange of cash.
So if wasp was living in Buriram and i was back there I would willing help him out.

I'm only just now reading through all these Comments . Thank you for this one oots . There has been advice on here that I should grow some balls and get into it myself ..... but I hesitate over and over . Even moving there means giving a lot of leverage to my Thai partner and it means selling up my home . I trust her completely -- but I've read a few times how its the people you trust that can hurt you . Not the ones you don't trust . This is not down to having no balls . It's down to reading of other people being destroyed by people they trusted . I spoke with you once oots about my ex-boss who warned me and warned me about treading warily and then HE got absolutely wiped out by his Thai partner . I've gone off the subject though . I read about agents 'parking' money into my account overnight and it's surely not legal ? And I never want to set myself up doing illegal stuff . Certainly not in Thailand . Anyway -- thanks for offering to help . W.

    .
    .

Moving on from my original Search for a good agent --- I started looking at YouTube Videos about life in Thailand . And realised that I had not given any thought at all to the matter of Mandatory Health Insurance . ( Don't step in and tell me I'm an idiot or a fuckwit or any of those things . I am ALL of them , OK ? )

So I made an enquiry to AXA Insurance ...... and the Quote was £7 000 !!! For a Year .
And it probably wouldn't even be acceptable as it seems you have to use an approved Thai Insurance Company .

I assume many of you have to take out the same Insurance . So is £7000 ( 294 000 Baht ) ridiculously expensive ?
You will already have done lots of searching around . You will have settled on a decent Company that meets Thai Requirements .
Would you be able to recommend an Insurance Company and give some idea of the Cost ?

Fortunately I have no Health problems right now .
