having done exs.for over 10yrs. we found it was easy do do the retirement way,as the old immigration at dan kwian all the io's understood how a fixed deposit works.i think in those previous 10yrs.they only asked twice what we lived on.i did think about an agent, but surely a savings account will do the trick.

^ just do the marriage and stick 400K in a deposit account, its not a lot and you can recycle the other 400K through a better investment vehicle.

Two amenable blokes from immi came round to our place the other day.

Another hoop jumped through for my non imm o 12 month extension based on marriage to a Thai.

Don’t foresee any problems at this point. Touch teakwood.

one thing i learnt in over 35yrs.never invest in anything, other than a GOOD WIFE,turned out to be the truest words spoken.
after over 20yrs.down the coal mines of wales and yorks where money was hard to come by,even horse and dog racing for over 30yrs.i was known as a TIGHT pillok.
so them that want a bung will not find me or the wife easy meat can fk.off.
those who thinks the marriage rout is the way to go,WRONG its the dull twats that dont under stand how a fixed deposit bank acount that are given me grief.

I wonder why some places visit every year when I only ever had them visit at my first application 5 years ago.
Maybe its because we are not close enough as we live 70kms from the Immigration Office we use.
Does getting multiple visits indicate they think you are a 'shady" character?

Maybe its wrong but it seems to work for a lot of folks, maybe part of the problem is looking at you from the mirror?
If they say jump, ask how high. Don't be obstinate and try and force your logic onto them, they will win.
Also remember to be flexible so you can accommodate them changing of the rules/interpretations etc.

When I went for my 60 day extension at Christmas there was another guy there with his wife applying for a 1 year marriage visa. They had missed a couple of items and were having to get them in a hurry. It was all quite friendly but they were going to be there for quite a while.
Anyway, wife enquired about it all because I am getting closer to being here permanently, should already have happened but I'm not throwing in the towel just yet. Immigration said they can do retirement visas directly but marriage visas need approval from Bangkok and take longer. Retirement visa is simpler and a lot less hassle if you have money in the bank anyway.

    Any thoughts on this?

I believe everything you have said is true and if the money issue is not an issue then that would most likely be the best way to go. However when talking about the money issue I am not sure it is "easier" if you go down the income route as there is too much room for the Immigration Officers to not understand or misinterpret so if you were to go 800K in the bank and set and forget it would be OK but they may then ask for proof of what you are living on if there is no money movement anywhere to be found.
I also believe you are absolutely correct re the application for marriage having to go to Bangkok for approval so is you were inclined to go the gratuity route to gain approval it is harder.

I think the key to me thinking it is not so difficult is I have had the same officers all the way and know what they want. Though this year I thought we had hit a snag but in the end we were lucky I guess and managed to get the application accepted but that doesn't mean it is approved yet.

When my Missus came to Australia we made the first application for a fiancée visa, second for temporary residency after we were married and then the third for permanent residency after 2 years. So all up 3 times we had to jump through the hoops but here it is every bloody year and gets tedious when the requirements or interpretations jump all over the place.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

It really isn't difficult at all.

Get a 90 day single entry Non-O based on marriage before arriving.
    Arrive.
Put money into a Thai bank account in your own name.
Get a 60 day extension based on family, taking your number of days to 150.
During this time the money in your bank account will have been seasoned for the required amount of time.
Get a 12 month extension based on marriage.

Only becomes tricky for people like Sir Bendy-Mendy that come in and out of the country during the time frames due to work etc, and those that cannot follow the simplest of instructions.

If the local IO say that retirement is easier, and there are no personal issues with the required insurance or the extra required funds, certainly go for it.

troy i have gone the past 10yrs the retirement rout, very easy it was TILL they [immig] started useing police immigration volanteers to check your paper work.but since these past 2yrs.they have given me greif over that they dont know what a fixed deposit is,so if you have the money then LEAVE it in a normal savings acount,as interest rates are low then its not worth the hastle of a fixed acc.these volanteers dont know their arse from their elbow,my last ext.dec.they told me the money must be in the bank 3MONTHS PRIOR.although the bank letter and my pass bank book say's 8yrs.
    3yrs.
    2yrs.
    3yrs. this term till aug.2023.

Yup. Just do what they ask and keep smiling. It's not their fault that the whole thing is... quite bizarre.

As for getting next to no interest on your 400/800k, at least you're not paying that sort of money just for the visa, as in Malaysia.

troy why i always use a fixed account 1yr. 2years.or 3yrs. for to plonk 800k extension cover plus extra for self cover for any hospital bill [big]
first you get a decent rate of interest.
there wont be any card attached to the acc.if needed you have to go to the bank in person to draw any amount you might need.
your pass book will be altered to show you have used it,therefore interest will be recovered if like me,interest [ is paid monthly]and a new rate entered in the book.
if there are no volanteers at your imm.a fixed acc.is the way to go.my latest fixed acc.pays 1.60%.

It’s one of the forum’s many glitches, hh.

Fixed now, as I’ve changed the number of pages displayed.

I think next time you go you should get Mrs HH to politely explain how the machinations of their renewal system and the incompetence of the volunteers are causing you serious health issues, they are sure to be understanding.

Another marriage extension stamp, another year, in the land of dreams. Celebrated with the first rain since October.

Very helpful all around, at my empty and local TIO.

Confirm the list of requirements have not changed prior to application, update the annual package, arrive, take a number, the bilingual officer ticks the boxes, pay the fee, wait a month to finally receive the stamp and off for a well deserved lunch at the local beach restaurant.

A pleasant start to the new year.
