^ In fairness to Luigi, that was my understanding also. But I didn't comment because I didn't know it for a fact.
Last time I did a land crossing, April 2014, I got 14 days and I didn't know the rule had changed till Phuketrichard mentioned it above.
Yes, the consulate is wrong.
I skim read about the nationality.
A Kiwi passport holder should get 30 days at both air and land borders.
If need be, this can then be extended for 30 days based on tourism, or 60 days based on family. Both cost 1,900thb and the days are counted from the end of the 15/30/90 day Visa Exemption he gets upon arrival, not from the date that he gets it.
Seems to be quite a variation of opinion here. The only reason he is not flying is because he is recovering from a lung condition and has been advised not to fly by his doctor.
Confusing isn't it David. At least you don't frequent and partake in the Advanced Acronyms thread, he's kind of taken that over and makes up the rules as he goes along. He's made me so insecure of my English i daren't send Emails at work anymore for fear of punctuation mistakes. He's got a fukin lot to answer for, starting with that effeminate haircut.

I didn't bother to read the b/s wrong answers.
No matter what you find on the inter-web the real answer is
Since Dec 31, 2016 they stopped 15 day visa exempt entries by land and went back to 30 day ones BUT at that time they put a limit of TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year.
So a kiwi passport holder entering the country at ANY land border crossing would get stamped in for a 30 day visa exempt entry.
They could also go to the immigration office and extend that entry for 30 more days for 1900baht OR extend it by 60 days based on marriage to a thai (without the need to show proof of funds) for the same price..
Now with that being said; depending on the border they're thinking of entering thailand at from Malaysia the immigration officers might ask for proof of 20K baht (or the equivalent) in CASH, proof of onward travel within 30 days and proof of lodging or a confirmed hotel booking. <- Those are ALL immigration rules that people entering the country can be asked to show BUT they seem really hard core about them at the southern land borders.
and just in case some goof-ball poster questions my previous post here's the notice (in engrish)
According to the Thai Embassy in Canberra, on 17th September last year the land border crossing visa was changed back to 15 days.
Sadly, like most b/s thai consulates scattered across the globe they don't know their ass from their elbow...
PRO TIP: don't ever trust a thai consulate in another country run by the ministry of foreign affairs about ANYTHING to do with entering thailand, visas OR extensions of stays. They don't know what they're talking about.
AND
don't ever trust a thai immigration office inside the country run by a division of the royal thai police about ANYTHING to do with visas that you get outside the country. They don't know what they're talking about.
What do you want me to do? Post a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp from a land border crossing or what?
The Sadao border with Malaysia is known as a problematic border to cross. Before they used to have people put 200baht in their passports to 'grease the wheels', then someone reported it and they suddenly started asking for proof of funds, to the point they'd send people back to malaysia to use an ATM and get the required cash to enter thailand.
Now that you didn't have any problems while anecdotally interesting (but not all that much) doesn't mean that everyone skates across the southern borders with any scrutiny...
