    Transfering Visas to New Passport

I just received my new US passport with a letter that requests Thai Immigration to transfer my current visa stamps to the new passport. The letterhead address on the document from the embassy is for Chang Wattana so I am wondering if my local Immigration office at Kap Cheong will do this?

Mine was done in Prathum Thani, so it seems so. You do it where you report for TM and all the other hoops we have to jump through.

The visa hasn't expired just the passport.
Best you can do is to go there and ask.

Usually one carries the second, cancelled , passport with the first.

You should be able to do this at KCI ......My friend had it done when renewing his one year extension but they tried to charge him 500 Baht ...He rang me and I told him to ask for 500 baht to be put on the receipt for the 1900 Baht for the extension making a total of 2400 baht . The IO had a shocked look on his face and said something in Thai to his wife ( possibly derogatory ) ...He ended up paying just 1900 baht for the extension and the transfer of his old visa to the new Passport was FREE

But it is possible that KCI only provides this service on an extension of stay renewals or perhaps lost passports.......but there is no problem having your valid visa in a 'cancelled' passport, so you can wait until you renew your extension or they will do it at Immigration at the Airport/Boarder if you wish to travel using your new passport ...I Think.....best wait for Tod or ring them 044559127

Interesting. Last time I did it either at Chang Wattana or Suanplu and I can't remember if there was a fee.

Brits get the same letter with new passports coupled with a stern request to report even the most minor issues or difficulties experienced at immigration.

There should be no fee. I have renewed 2 passports here and never paid a fee and had the visa's and such transferred quickly indeed.

^ Last time I arranged that my new passport would start the same month the old visa expired, so no problems. Time before that I transferred - no charge, but I lost two complete pages in the new passport...

^I ran out of pages and I am travelling to the US so I had no choice but to do it before it expired.

^ Sad comment. The one perk Americans always and I mean always got was free added pages accordion style. Just walk into any embassy and it was done. I must have at least 7, including one passport with 3, 20 page extensions added. Those were the days... Pity it was nice to be acknowledged as an expat.

This system of sending the new passport by EMS had me sweating because I have no confidence in the Thai postal system. But to my relief it arrived safe and sound even sooner than promised.

I have used EMS for years and only once has there ever been a problem .The Van/lorry my package was in was involved in a crash and my package arrived 2 days late.......EMS is as good or better than any postal service I have used anywhere else in the world and cheaper

I am not sure but I think the US passports are couriered over to the embassy. You can either pick them up there or have them sent by EMS inside Thailand. $110 includes the postage to Thailand. Please confirm Humbert...

I picked mine up and it was only then they cancelled my old passport and gave me the letter to Thai immigration.

The postage is an additional 80 baht. There is an EMS substation adjacent to the consular office. You address an envelope and leave it at the consular window. They send along the old passport, cancelled, along with a letter requesting Immigration transfer the visa stamps.
My experience with EMS has been mostly good but I did miss receiving a letter from US Social Security so I worry, after all, it is Thailand.

Got my stamps transferred to my new passport at Kapcheong. No hassle, just a form to complete and an hour wait. No fee. They did forget to attach my 90 day report to the new passport which I called them on. They had inadvertently tossed it in the trash.

They will do your passport swap first. Advise you get there bright and early and NOT on a Monday
Looks like a local know-it-all got ripped off for 500 baht ....maybe he should change his nick to Gotscammed

^That's pretty funny. He was probably happy to pay it since it cements his influential white man status with them.

Yepp, that's what Immigration office boss at Don Muang airport told me when I was about to departure for Penang and asked if they could transfer the visa to the new passport.
"Sorry, can't do. Keep together until visa expires" was his words.

When returning to Samui a few days later the Immigration officer wrote a notification in the new passport about the visa in the old one and put a rubber band around both.

Why spend time at Chang Wattana when there is a simpler solution?
