    6 month visa

What's the easiest way to get a visa to stay 6 months in Thailand these days ?

This is for a 29 year old American who will fly in from Vietnam on a 2 month tourist visa which he later intends to get renewed for a further 1 month at a Thai immigration office.

What about the extra 3 months he likes to stay ? It used to be, and I'm going back a few years now, that one could hop across the border to, say, Laos or Malaysia for a few days and get another 2 month tourist visa from a Thai consulate there and then go back to Thailand for another 2 month stay which can be extended for another 1 month at Thai immigration.

    Is this still allowed ?

    Thanks in advance.

Ask the American Scott Mallon. He has a utube channel called "anamericaninbangkok ." Im shure you can get some realtime info from him. Plus some frank advise. Time is money though. For a few bucks he may talk one on one to you if you need specific advice. Otherwise I'm sure he's covered the topic recently on his channel.

Good luck on your adventure and I hope you get something out of his commentary. Some of it quite amusing.

Why doesn't the person just get a double entry tourist visa which is good for 60 days per entry and each entry can be extended inside the country for 30 additional days.. That'd be almost 6 months..

That 6 month multi-entry tourist visa was an idea thought up by the Tourism Ministry and that Prayuth gave the green light to look into.. It's not even anything more than a proposal right now.

In another thread I mentioned that in order to change overstay OR in this case visa policy for outside the country at embassies, it takes changing the actual law. It's not just writing a line into a Police Order which changes how extensions are done inside the country.

If I was a betting man, I'd say this 6 month dealy will fall off the radar and we'll not hear another peep of it. I could be wrong but, even if they did table it for debate, write it down, vote on it, get Prayuth to sign it publish it in the Royal Gazette, it'd still be 30 days after that before it'd take effect.. There's no way to make it start immediately.

    Royal Thai Embassy Hanoi

Ive watched all his vids and he gives practical advice on anyone contemplating going to/living in thailand. He might answer a question by email if you write to him, but if it's something he's addressed several times - and he has - just watch the videos...

Funniest of all was the guy who wants to find a bargirl and bring her back stateside and convert her to orthodox judaism and wear the outfit!!!! (Just think of the get-up the mormon women wear and you'll get the picture). The guy must have been winding him up for sure...

A friend got a double entry tourist VISA in Phnom Penh a couple weeks ago. He used a travel agent in PNH to run it etc.. It's possible, I guess money talks? I'll email him and find out the total cost including "extras". However, it can vary as most know....

I too questioned Phuketrichard's assertion that PP won't issue double entry tourist visas, but in reality I don't keep up on that type of visa.

I never tell people to go to PP for a thai visa of any type.. They're just not as "user friendly" as other places in S/E Asia

Very true. It has long been said that going to PNH is a risk, don't depend on getting what you hope for etc.. However, it's much easier to go there from Bangkok or Pattaya than to Laos. Always a balance and always have enough money to get out of any trouble. At many points in time in the past, there were "packages" from Bangkok where you were taken to PoiPet and put up in a casino hotel. An "agent" would take the passports to PNH and return with them two or three days later with said double entry tourist VISA's. I've not, like you, kept up on the current offerings. Many are uncomfortable giving their passport to third parties. Always keep a copy is my motto.

Thanks for the replies. This info has been passed on.

One more question. When crossing the Thai/Laos border over the friendship bridge going to Vientiane, is it still the case that the Laos visa can be bought more cheaply if one pays in USD ?

I've been to the Thai Embassy several times in Vientiane, Laos. I've always got a 2 month Visa for about 1000 ThB. I thought one could only get a 15 day visa on a land crossing; but I got 2 months each time I was there in 2010/11/12. They never asked for an air ticket. In 2010, they gave me a free visa. That was the year of the BKK riots. I was living near Udon Thani, so it was a short bus ride to the Friendship Bridge. There was no currency preference in those years. Most Ferangs paid in Thai Baht.

NO way did u ever get a 2 month visa crossing the land borders ever in Thailand. or are you saying you got a single 2 month tourist visa in Vientiane as all tourists visas are 2 months

Perhaps u meant u were activating the second entry of your double tourist visa.

G7 country passport holders get 30 day visa exempts at land borders.

The member clearly said he had been to the Thai Embassy. This tells us all that he got a tourist VISA. You don't go to the Embassy if you are just getting a VISA on Arrival. So, YES he/she may have gotten 60 days. I wonder sometimes why people on the internet are so anxious to jump on others with such anger and disdain who are simply trying to contribute and share their experiences.

    News flash there NokTang;
Neither do most westerners get a "VOA" (visa on arrival) <- which incidentally are actually SOLD at entry points to the people from 19 countries when they enter thailand.

You are talking about a "visa exempt entry" <- which has that catchy name because you showed up here without having previously purchased a visa from a thai embassy/consulate and were given a 30 day permission to stay stamp..

People from from 52 countries can enter thailand sans visa or so the inter-web says!

Most western countries all get a 30 day visa exempt stamp comin' in by air. G7 countries also get 30 days entering by land, the rest get 15 days entering by land..

There are a few countries which get longer visa exempt entries, I know Koreans get 90 days visa exempt due to a reciprocal agreement with thais going to Korea.

Just an observation but I think people "jump in with disdain" because some posers <sic> don't know their ass from their elbow about what's what!

The entry without a VISA, being from one of the exempt countries, has always been called a "Visa On Arrival" aka VOA. Sorry mate, but if we take your words as gospel it still does't excuse PhuketRichard's hysterical outburst towards another member. Said member went to the embassy in Laos to get his 60 day VISA's. End of story.

By completely clueless foreigners not 'down with the lingo'..

You can call it what you want, but calling it what it ain't don't make it so man..

A visa exempt entry and a Visa on Arrival are whores from a different go-go bar, or is that horses of a different color.. I mix up my metaphors here..

    carry on, as you were..

.....hysterical outburst..... if i wanted to do that i would have put it all in CAPS!!!! :-)

A voa is not a visa exempt.

I think we will all agree on that
