The only thing I didn't explain about the Savan Vegas shuttle service is that it stops so you can exit Thailand, you get back in and it stops again so you can enter Laos, you get back in and go to the hotel. All part of the service.

That Mukdahan/Savannakhet border is getting busier as people who've been to Vientiane one too many times go there instead.

IF you're in Bangkok, it can behoove you to buy your Lao visa from the Embassy here.. Now I checked but almost no travel agents will do it for you, so you're gonna hafta go get it yourself but (unless I'm mistaken) it's the same price as at the border.

You might be thinkin'; WTF Todly, why would I do this if I can buy the Lao visa at the border?

The answer is then you don't queue up with all the other visa runners there to buy a Lao visa, you just go right on into Lao.

    Just sayin'..

There was a time last year? when the casino actually offered a "VISA" service. I don't know if they still do. They took your passport to the Thai consulate and you just spent the night in the Casino Hotel and got it back the next day with said tourist or Non B. VISA. Do they still offer this service?

Question seems moot as the other member called. However, I might advise you there is a flight to Savannaket from BKK three or four times a week. This method isn't for the cheap cunts out there. I don't like prop planes which this route flies as they have been known to go down in rivers for some reason.

The flight is daily I think and its only ever half full and a good plane with good service. Casino shuttle bus can pick you up.

If you're going to Savannakhet, both Air Asia and Nok Air offer Fly & Ride where you fly Don Mueang to Nakhon Phanom then take their shuttle service to the Mukdahan Indochina Market (about 5 km from the Friendship bridge). Their all in round trip price for that is about 2500baht.

If you're going to Vientiane the airline Thai Lion Air flys to Udon Thani round trip for just over 1000baht (if you play the dates right). Then you can take the mini van for 200 baht to Nongkhai.

thefactoryoutlet; when was the last time you stood in that queue to buy a visa for Lao at either Mukdahan/Savannakhet or NongKhai/Vientiane? That line is a MILE long at Vientiane, and Savannakhet is getting worse by the day due to every thai related forum under the sun talkin' it up. You can stand in that line, I'll just walk into Lao, okay?

FWIW, I'm in Don Muang and it's more hassle going to the Lao Embassy a couple of times to drop off and pick up my passport.
Last year I went to Savannakhet and got a visa on arrival. Had to fill out a form there and then and was the last one to be served. The other visa runners got sorted out quickly and jumped into a mini van instead of the bus and taken straight to the embassy.
I got back on the regular bus which took me to the bus station in town and then took a samlor to the embassy.

I still had to wait 45 mins for the embassy gates to open and got served before the other runners who got there well before me.

So the way I see it, if you're nearby the Loa embassy, get a visa. If it's a hassle and you're bussing it up to Mukdahan, print out a 'visa on arrival' form (I don't have a printer but will use an internet shop next time) and take your time getting to the embassy.

Most visa runners seem to be in a hurry and arrive by overnight bus from Bangkok at 7 in the morning then head straight for the bridge. I've crossed over a few times in the afternoon and been the only westerner on the bus. Why rush ...... unless you are a tefler and have to be back in front of the whiteboard on Monday.

Just came back from Savanna and it's still the quietest place I've ever been to.
I arrived at the embassy gates with 6 foreigners waiting for the gates to open.
I had my documents checked and visa form filled in by the visa service (60b) next door after which I rejoined the queue. There were then 10 in front of me in the queue. There were no flippers in sight this year. Last year loads of the sods barged in front as soon as the gates opened and legged it to the visa counter.

Handed over my documents and got my collection slip. By which time there was approx 10-12 in the queue behind me.

For ref., the new embassy is on the main road on right-hand side just before the Savan-ITEC building on the left. The road that runs from the bridge to the bus station. You'll pass it on the way to the station. Embassy from the station is only a 10 minute walk.

It sounds like this image off the Savannakhet Thai Consulate website is correct for the location.

I've been reading some reports where if you had two or more double entry tourist visas from Savannakhet they are requiring you show proof of income from abroad OR you can get just a single entry.

I wonder if/how this will change after the 13th of Nov when they offer either a single or a multi-entry tourist visas?

Oh, for people who may wanna go prepared here's the Savannakhet Thai Consulate Visa Application

Nope, from this picture it appears that map could be up to date..

In fact, that roundabout has not one, but TWO sauropods and a giant pan flute as well!

This was the only hiccup I had on my run.

I didn't download the VOA form from an internet shop as I intended.

On the Thai side, after getting the exit stamp, I let everyone get back on the bus first so that I was last on and stood near the bus door. I was first off at the Lao side and headed straight for the office, which was closed. After waiting 10 mins they opened and handed me the VOA form and I quickly got a space on the small table nearby to fill it in.

4-5 other people had to fill the same form in too, while a few others already had them filled in. After handing in the form and paying the fee I had to wait a minute for my passport with Loa visa..........along with a Loa entry/dep card which then had to be filled in too. Eventually got my Loa entry stamp, only then to find that the Thai-Lao bus in the meantime had fukked off leaving myself and 6 others having to wait an hour for the next bus.

I think the problem is that the bus driver can't see anyone at the Foreigners counter because all he sees is the back of the counter booths.

Anyway, myself and the others who got stranded just chipped in 40b each and got a mini van to the embassy and dropped off. While two continued on to the bus station because they had luggage to retrieve from the buses hold.

It's for one year. But can only stay 3 months maximum at any one time.
If you do a border run a day or two before the visa's expiry date then you can get another 3 months giving you a total of approx 15 months overall.

I think it's normally 90 days, not trying to be picky but if you are booking flights etc it pays to be accurate ,In practice as the in out days count its only about 425 days total still good value.

If you got 3 whole months kindly confirm its unheard of but anything is possible.
