    Wrong.

You can open contracts for telephone service, get your vehicles in your name only - talking here about those w/out work permits. And the biggie is ability to get the Thai Government Hospital 'Gold Card' to get in that system.

It might help too to bring your Pooyyai Baan along to the Amphur to sit in with the Palaat (Deputy Sheriff) during your interview.

    The Village Headman.

Every Mooban in Thailand has one. Ask your Amphur Office (City Hall) who is yours in the area you live in and introduce yourself to him/her.

Agreed, though I'm not sure how important it would be seeing as he's in Sodom.

It's now been stopped. You can have your name in the wife's Blue Book if you have children.

I believe you'll find that situation is much like the 'rules' enforced by the Immigration folks which change depending on which office you do business.

    Incorrect.

Most new 'estate builds' in Thailand do not fall into the 'headman' system - They do not have 'moo baan' status , but instead fall directly under Amphur control.

In such cases, the owners can vote to elect a headman to represent them if they want to, many do not as there are advantages in being able to deal with the Amphur directly when normally you would have been told to fuck off and tell your Pooyai about your problems

Appreciate being corrected on that point.

The lack of the Headman system in an estate might be one less bit of bureaucratic red tape although it is very useful to be able to go to the Pooyai Baan directly with your minor grievances rather than City Hall.

Better still, you can go to your local government hospital and buy health insurance for 2,800 baht if you have a yellow book.

    More here

Double edged sword. If your pooyai is a drunken old cnut voted into the position for life (although that has now changed), who will only do anything if there is money in it for him.... you are screwed.

There are a number of good ones out there, but from hearsay, there are a significant number of complete wankers.

Sounds good - I hope to sort that out in the future; maybe a year or so when I get back; I think the finance on the Honda Fabulous is completed by then...

I don't believe so. But I've been told that they will honour all cards issued previously.

I'm lucky in that mine is efficient and professional although she (semi-babe material here) wasn't at all familiar with the Tabian Baan Leung and it took a bit of explaining to get her to see the value in it for the Farang. She accompanied me to the Amphur and vouched for my 'good name'. The Palaat was reluctant at first to issue me that Yellow Book but when the Pooyai told her "You want to let this poor Farang have everything in the wife's name", the Palaat relented.

Mine was the first Yellow Book this Amphur had ever issued so the Palaat was afraid a messing it up. Actually takes a fair bit of paperwork to get it generated but no more so than for a Thai to obtain their Blue House Book.

According to another forum this insurance only applies to immigrant workers in Thailand. Farangs don't count. So the forum sez.

Believe you'll find that the "Boss Girl" is titled 'Pallaat' or Khun Pallaat if you want to address her correctly. That translates to English as a Deputy Sheriff.

    Good luck!
