Yea, I'd have to say you'd get flogged for that one...

So now you've got your 15 day stamp, paid your escort, and back to wherever Thailand. What's your next step?

To ltnt: now that I got my stamp, I have been saving funds and awaiting a job- I start 3rd week of this month so I've been biding my time. This answer coincides w/ a response I am going to post on a different thread here:

    https://teakdoor.com/thai-visas-and-v...-possible.html

I went here yesterday to check it out. It is open- but exactly that: a border crossing/checkpoint. No towns, no hawkers and nothing to buy (2 restaurants and a snackshop though).

As I am awaiting the completion of the office space for my job, I wanted to extend the visa. Plus when I came to Thailand for the first time, my first visit was to Kan, and I wanted to see it again. I didn't use the Visa Run service mentioned in the above thread- only because he told me that he didn't have customers scheduled that day and I would have to pay extra...Hmmm, no thanks. Went on my own by learning that you can hire a "taxi"(songtaew) for 1,000 baht to go and take u back. That may sound like a lot, but it is pretty far and it is 3+ hours of the drivers time.

Anyhoo- the roads are in great condition except for 1 small patch over 1 bridge where they were still pouring concrete so we were diverted to the left slightly. It gets hilly and curvy as one might expect when get near the border, but no problems. Quite beautiful actually.

The 15 day extension was 700 Baht and took 1 hour- don't care, I got it done. Bring on the criticisms bitter old members who have nothing better to do!

If (God forbid) you ever meet a trouble maker at any of the check points someday, he will ask you a simple question (based on the dates stamped in your passport), which I'm pretty sure you won't be able to answer.

The way it used to be done in those days was to make sure the stamps (dates) all tallied. The place you went to was never used because there was (and still is) no way to tally up the dates on the stamps.
Mickey- can you expand on this how do you know that where I went never and still does not tally numbers. Care to share some experiences or info?

Jons, thanks for the new border in Kan info. 1,000bt seems reasonable for the songtaew. Did you have to pay for the Burmese stamp/visa?

Is your new work place offering you a work permit?

Gazza- the 700 Baht I paid the man was inclusive. It paid for Thai and Burmese dealings. Then I waited for 1 hour and after I observed him finishing my paperwork, his helper monkey hopped on the motorbike and rounded the corner down the hill to the Burmese office, returning shortly w/ everything in order.

Yeah- the company is taking care of my work permit (Non-O ?), so I want to have all my ducks in a row

There is no expense incurred as far as the "Thai dealings" when leaving the country, it's the price he paid to get the day pass to Burma, have someone schlep his passport to and fro getting the exit stamp, the entry/exit stamps from Burma and the new entry stamp into Thailand.

    NOTE 2 jons557:
Remember a work permit is NOT a visa to stay here! It just the book which gives you permission to work. You also hafta have a Non-B or a Non-O visa (and/or an extension of stay). On thing to note if you have a Non-O extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national it is NOT tied to your working. That way if you become unemployed your extension to stay here doesn't expire too. If you can get it sorted that way so your extension and work permit aren't tied together, you'll be better off.

If the company you're gonna work for isn't all that dialed in on getting the required documents together so you can apply for a work permit, you'll start hearing excuses from them. It's most likely they've not done it before and are afraid to ask someone for fear of losing face..

Most companies have you apply for a work permit FIRST, and take the receipt along with their documentation either outta the country or if they're even slightly "connected" to the local Thai Immigrations office to get the initial 90 day Non-O or Non-B issued. Then after that 90 days winds down you take your work permit, your contract and the other required documents back to Immigrations and they'll give you an extension of stay for the duration of the contract (usually a year).

Going the above route your extension of stay is tied to your work permit. Become unemployed and your extension ends that day. You'd hafta go to Immigrations and either apply for an extension for another reason (married to a Thai), OR buy an "emergency 7 day" extension where you hafta leave the country within a week.

Still good luck, it seems you're at least meandering down the correct path. Good to know about that border crossing and how it works.

Is this overstay story true? or are we farangs actually that gullible?

I took a guy to the border because he got offered a job in Dubai hence the need to leave the country, but he had a 3 yr overstay.
He just paid his fine and went to Cambodia.
He could have paid it at the airport but he didn't want a possibility of a delay.

I suspect its a story as a front for agents.

Anyone that knows the Thai police know that they can't pass up the opportunity for money.

the main problem with overstay is the possibility of arrest whilst in the country, not the fine due on leaving

it would seem to me u will need to leave again, since all u did last time was go to the border, and get the Non B visa after they have submitted ur paperwork for ur wp as you need the receipt stating that they have applied for you to get the non B, than on ur return you can get a 1 year extension.
OR if there is not the required money or thai employees in your place of work you can leave again and get a 1 year multiple B visa which is NOT tied to the wp, ( my gf went this way)

Or get the non O cause ur married and get your extension based on that.

Note , you can NOT have a wp with a 15 day stamp

Best of luck, cause judging from the past your going to need it.

555+ saw me on the sky train w/a tape measure on my belt!!

Was I wearing my usual street attire of Levis jeans, a KISS t-shirt & ball cap, or was I wearing the obligatory navy blue maintenance man uniform which thai engineers wear here?

Since I got the "consulting engineer" gig (which really is nothing more than a glorified maintenance man) I decided to wear the same uniform as the rest of the engineering/maintenance team.

Now whenever I wear the uniform; repleat with my circuit tester, box cutter, carpenters pencil & tape measure, when I enter a Sky Train car, those thai office workers look me up 'n down and wrinkle their noses at me. Some even go so far as to make that sound when you exhale air outta your nostrils. (I'm sure it's not BO because I shower often). I sometimes wanna ask them, "Who the fuck do you think changes the light bulbs, fixes your phone & LAN lines for you?

On the other side of the coin; ANY Thai in this country who hasta wear a uniform while working; security, housekeeping, parking lot attendants, food court workers, etc now treats me like we're long lost friends! Truth be told, I'd rather be seen as one of the rank-n-file than some wanna be hi-so or worse another foreign engrish teacher in ill-fitting clothes.

It's not so much that I have an interesting profession; it's that I have an interesting life.. Mostly because I've went out of my way to make it interesting to me. I'm not afraid to interact with or ask questions to thaiz in charge be it Police, Immigrations, etc. I'm also not above volunteering my time IF there is some benefit to me down the road.

I think being nosy; as in wanting to know how things are done, why things are done the way they are and making no bones about wanting to know the answers no matter how many levels of Thais I gotta go up to find the real answer, doesn't hurt. I'm sure the fact that I can interact in at least semi-coherent Thai instead of 2-word-tourist-thai, baby-talk engrish, charades and mime helps some too!. . .

^So Todd, I'm relocating next month up North and to my understanding my only obligation is to make my presence known to the local Immigration office? Since my current Retirement 0 visa has a few months left on it before renewal I don't believe its a requirement to re-establish a new Visa point until the old one expires.

That said, do I have to re-do my drivers license as well with new address?

I have carried a ret.O type visa for the past 9 years and now I'm wondering will I be required to re-post all the preliminary paperwork used in the original submission years ago. I know I need to process the new Chanote paper, but no medical cert or Embassy statements should be required?

I've never posted for a "Married to a Thai National," visa, but I think its about time to do so as well. 400,000K is a lot better than the 800,000K.

    "ltnt":
I think the letter of the law reads that you must inform your (new) local Immigrations Office within some bullshit time frame of 24 hours after relocating.

You will want to use form; TM.28.

    Here's the link to the forms from the Thai Immigration website;
    Forms From Thai Immigrations

It doesn't reset your 90 day reports or when you're extension is due. In fact the only thing it does is get you "in the system" at the local Immigrations Office.

I've known people who moved that waited until their next 90 day report was due before turning it in.. They weren't even looked at sternly.

As far as your Thai D/L; it's up to you. You can get another one with the new address, seeing as the new style Thai driver's licenses have your address written in Thai on the back, but you don't have to. It's just more a convenience than anything else seeing as the new one will have your new address.

Be warned though, a friend did this when he moved down south, and they didn't give him another 5 years, just the remainder of the time left on the one he turned in, even though it cost the same as the 5 year license, lol.

Oh, I forgot, the new office will probably want copies of every extension of stay back to the original visa you came into Thailand on; so if this is your 10th you'd have 9 yearly extension of stay stamps in your passport(s)..

If you've gotten a new passport in the interim, make a copy of that first page where they stamped in like a half page dealy and then transferred the permission to stay stamp into the new passport. That stamp has got the "routing number" of the other extensions from the previous passport which Bangkok uses to track them in your "main file".

Thanks Todd. Appreciate the confirmation of my thoughts as well as the D/L data.

I like to stay officially registered and remain under the radar as any kind of foreign bad guy so I will follow the rules as they apply simply because that's what I do.

Saves on later explanations or false impressions...

Thanks for the link as well and the TM 28 advice.

Jons557 - I would LOVE to have the name and contact # of the person who helped you. I personally have an 11year overstay (truly not my own doing and virtually having been left with no choice but to do so) - and I just recently received a new passport (finally) from the US Embassy. I tried to leave this past Monday, but they would not take my 20K overstay fine and told me to go to Immigration and Chaeng Wattana. EVERYBODY (including my embassy) has Strongly advised me NOT to do that!! I'd appreciate if anyone could help me out with some 'proper' advice?
    Cheers, Branddez
