Fluke, kid can get a UK passport after birth, no age requirement.
Think you need to see a lawyer and establish what your G/Fs status in Thailand is. Documentation could be refugee status and it's the Thai Governments policy to repatriate refugees back to Burma.

How can the family legally own land, only Thais can.
Your son will get a Thai birth certificate and your G/F can have one to, doesn't give citizenship, but records the birth.

Get the kid a UK passport ASAP, if things go wrong at least he won't be stateless. Jim

It would make a nice sinsot......

I'd get her to dig a little deeper about how. Much it can be done for but as you are a Farang people will already expect more. I would try not showing my face at any meetings.

Yes, Im not sure what her official status is in Thailand .
She is completely legal in the village and surrounding areas, She just needs to get a travel permit to go to other areas , which are easily obtainable .
Her sisters (who as the same legal status as her) kids go to School in the village and her Brother got Thai I.D. when he turned 16 .
We currently live in a place , away from the village , where She doesnt have permission to live , but the authorities accept the documentation that She has .
Her Sister got stopped by the Police for not wearing a crash helmet in town away from the village and She also shouldnt have been there, as she had no I.D. they took her into the Police station , after the documentation was shown, She was let out .
No fine, not sent back to the village or anything .
We went to visit a friend in jail last week and you need to show ID before being allowed in , I showed my passport , another Thai friend showed her Thai I.D and my gf just showed her peice of paper and that was acceptable as ID (even though we were outside her permitted area ).

Think I would be a bit wary of that, ID card means citizenship and passport.
Not heard of ways around the system, being granted asylum and being granted citizenship, would think are 2 different things.

Don't think I would part with any money until I did a bit of checking.
You may get more info from the UN and there agents out there, on what is and isn't possible.

As said The Thai Government policy is to repatriate when Burma is deemed safe, for peoples to return. That's why they have been issuing birth certificates, as per UN rules. That way they have documentation that they were born in Thailand of Burmese family and Burma will have to except them back, when Burma is deemed to be one of the good guys again. Jim

Makes no difference where she was born, just takes some one to verify the birth, village head or sub district Governor, elders, uncles etc. Kids are born out my way in the mountains and can be years before they get registered at the Amphor and they can be born in Lao, just use family to say this side of the line.
Wife was 6 months old before the village head took the details for births to town, no roads then, just dirt trails and a hot border war.
You need to look at options, look out side the square, sometimes there are ways around things, but get the kid a UK passport. That will give the G/F an out as well. Jim

So if they're all official and as family can vouch for your misses - what's stopping her getting ID and a passport?

No one in the Family has full I.D (apart from her Brother, who only got it last year when he turned 16 and spent his whole life in Thailand and could prove it through Birth certificates and school records) .
There are many people in the North of Thailand who are in the same position , the Gov are making some effort to give the people I.D.s , some have already got it and others like my gf have applied and are waiting for further developments

I was in a bar last night and was told about its possible to get a one year type O Visa which also allows you to work, for B26 000 and it comes from within the local immigration office and that you dont have to leave the Country to obtain one .
Now , I have no intention of getting one , but the guy claims that they are legitimate , has anyone had any experience of these kind of Visas?

Are they as good as legitimate ?

Fluke, simply put, visas are issued outside the country, extensions of stay inside the country and work permits by the labour department.
So what the guy is saying sounds a bit suspect. Jim
