i understand that when applying for a marriage visa you have to have proof of 400,000 baht deposited in a bank account 2 or 3 months prior to application.does this have to be a thai bank account on the first application or will copys of my bank account suffice first time around ?

If you mean applying for an extension based on marriage then yes the 400k has to be in a Thai bank for 2 months first application and 3 months for further applications.

If you mean applying for a visa then different rules apply.
