    Extension of Stay problem

Ok, I got a situation developing here.

On the 1st June 2011 I was given a 1 year extension to my visa, a multi-entry B. This visa runs with my work permit which expires on 1st June 2012 along with the current extension.

My problem is that during the month of April this year 3 employees left our small company without handing in notice, we were busy working on a large project and did not replace those staff quickly enough. As part of the extension renewal process based on work you have to submit the last 3 months of documents from the social security office showing that the company was employing at least 4 Thai staff. My docs show enough staff for february and march but april the number drops to three...Not enough!

We now have enough Thai staff but my extension is being refused, the option is there to brown envelope this problem away but its not cheap.

They have offered to extend me for 7 days to look at alternatives.

My question is this, If I wanted to leave Thailand and try somewhere to get a 3 month non-immigrant B or O (I will have no work permit after friday, but have fresh 1 year contract of employment) where would I go, what docs do I need etc etc?

I used to get my WP extended for 3 months at a time as I was the only employee in the company. Had to do a visa run still.

I'm sure if you have all the correct docs, Singapore will be OK.

A trip to Singapore would be more than the number they want to overlook the the "missing staff"

    Is Vientiane an option?

Much cheaper but longer by train.

Check locations on Air Asia. 8,000 baht return to Penang, but you need 3 nights as you get in and leave late afternoon early evening. Stay in a hotel that has a visa guy inside. Gonna run ya 15+ if you are tight. Good luck.

Not really rocket science, is it?

And it's also not by accident that the bribe is slightly less than a Singapore visa run, despite the Thailand is run by a bunch of monkeys brigade, these guys know exactly what it would cost you and have placed their bribe accordingly.

    Is it a bribe though?

I'm do not qualify for an extension based on the documents I have.

I'm kind of looking at this from the point of view that I'll end up paying a fee for something that I couldn't otherwise of got my hands on. I quite like the way the option is there to avoid all the traveling etc.

Exactly. Spin you said the brown envelope was 'not cheap', but cheaper than a trip to Singapore obviously.

That's the 64k dollar question and one we can argue about for page after page.
You can look at it as payment for his extra work, traveling expenses, a tip or a bribe.
Just do what you are happy to do and bollocks to everyone else's opinion.

Every year I turn up at immigration with whiskey, fruit & kanom.
I put it on the table and then hand him my extension application.
Is that a bribe or a tip ?
Personally I don't care, I get what I want and it's only once a year so I am comfortable with it.

Like you said, it's difficult to define. Anyways, the option is there for me to go to Vientiane and get a three month non b single entry but to tell you the truth, its a long weekend coming up due to the buddha day on the 4th June and the idea of standing in line with the great unwashed at an immigration office in another country does not appeal!
