    Manila visa-run

Ok, here it is, all the info you need:

Manila isn't a bad place to idle away a few days.
Beer, cigs and gals come cheaper than in the Los, but food and accomodation are more. $30-40 will get you a clean aircon room with private bath in Ermita. There are cheaper options, but not recommended - believe me.

The Thai Consulate is on Rada St., Makati, and not the easiest place to get a tourist visa. Basically, they treat you the same as applying Pilipinos, processing takes a little longer than elsewhere, apply in the morning and collect 2 days later in the afternoon.

On top of the filled out application form, you will need to submit a covering letter, explaining why you want a tourist visa, your employment status and financial situation, together with original documents as well as photocopies of:
    -Passport relevant pages
-Travel documents to and out of Thailand
-Latest bank statements and/or credit cards
Don't forget to specify where you are going to stay, but evidence of confirmed bookings is generously waved.
Allow extra time for queries and additional requirements.

A thread on how to waste one's time there without getting mugged will follow in the travel forum.

You are a hero!!! Manila is the last place I would go for a visa run. Lived in the Philippines for 3 years and moved (fled) to Thailand.

As you say - the hotels are expensive. Local food is hard to eat so you have to stick to American fast food - if you do not want to spend endless money. The embassy in Manila is extremely unfriendly. Even 10 years ago 1 entry was the only thing you could get if you were lucky. And I know many people not being lucky...

The good thing on the Philippines is the nature. The bad thing are the people there. Do you know that ANY girl can say you raped her? And believe me - as long as the story seems to be real there is NO way out. Alibi does not count if the victim tells a story that makes sense - this from the highest court in the Philippines. Some could even prove that they were in the States at the certain time. Did not help - live in prison or death sentence. I am not kidding.

This all made me to flee this country! The good thing is that you can read the local news papers because they are in English. The bad thing is that you can read the local news papers because you will begin to understand what are the facts there.

Believe me it is not an exaggeration. It is based on a real case - the guy was a movie star in the Philippines.

I studied about 70 rape cases. There is NO way out. Did you watch what was going on when the killed Edsagarai - do not remember the exact writing. But this was a festival over there! And in addition to this - when I left the Philippines 6 customers of bars in Angeles were on the death row. Cherry girls...and police... One of them was a friend of mine.

    Again - I LIVED there 3 years. I was not a tourist!

I too lived in the Philippines for a few years. I know a man who went through this nightmare. An attorney friend friend of mine told me about young girls and rape charges in the Philippines. I also read the same type of stories in the newspapers.

If a young girl, under age, sits on the stand and cries, sobbing, that you took her cherry - YOU ARE GUILTY. They, the judges, reason that no young girl would do that unless they were telling the truth.

When a complaint is made, you are arrested and put into jail. There you stay until trial is complete. Not bailable offense. Average time to start of trial - from today on and up to a few years. Average case is not too long, however, if you fight it it could take a few years. You are going to stay in jail untill the case is finished. Besides, as the darling said, you are already guilty.

Sentence which is required by their law - life. Most of the time the death sentence is added.

Many innocent westerners have been scammed. It will cost you a few million to escape. This is one of the most famous scams in RP.

If possible, flee. To date someone being brought back to PR on charges is very rare. The accuser or their family need to have big money to pay under the table to get you back.

I lived in the Philippines for aboout ten years. I was married at one time to a Filipino. After having found Thailand would I ever go back - NO WAY.

Come on, guys, it's not that bad really - I lived and worked there myself before.

I forgot to mention flights may be had for as low as Bt 5000 return, if you book well in advance with Cebu Pacific.

Yeah, yeah, they're invariably an hour late and you need to bring your own snacks... dooh - how brave of me.

Haven't been accused of raping anyone yet, either, these high traveling risks seem to somehow escape my notice and consideration...

I'm thinking of a visa run to Brunei - sounds like the opposite to the Phillipines - I doubt there are too many women worth raping in that small Islamic nation anyway as they are all locked up indoors doing the housework. I guess the men just have to bugger each other there as that's about all they can get!

Just checked it out. The plane starts at 1:10 am in Bankgok and arrives at 5:25 am in Manila - Angeles is not possible. The return flight starts at 10:05 pm in Manila and is at 12:20 am in Bangkok. The flights will start in April.

This all for 6950 what is not bad. But I am afraid because of the flight/arrival time you have to add in both cases a taxi to/from the Airport in Bangkok (in my case to Pattaya). This makes the offer not so good anymore. But did not check the rates of other airlines now. Have not been there for a very long time - see the reason above

But anyhow. Never forget when we had to jump out of the plane in Cebu City before the start. Then we could watch how the plane burned down. Was my lucky day. A bit later... This was almost 8 - 10 years ago - but still hard to forget.

Of course it's possible, by the time you change some money and get out it's nearer to 7, take a bus to Cubao and off you go to Angeles, early enough to catch an economy room.

Ferk me crosswise - I agree with KID!

The 'danger' level though is considerably higher than in Thailand, one needs to be that extra bit alert, but trouble can easily be avoided most of the time.

The Filipines is one of my favourite countries to visit in the world.
The country is a mess, and Manila is a shitehole- but still worth a few days, you can have fun there.
The people are infectious, with easy smiles, a good sense of fun and a love of music.
Places like Boracay, Puerto Galera and Palawan are just beautiful. As are the mountains in north Luzon etc- natural beauty abounds throughout the archipelago.

If it weren't for the fact that Mrs is Thai, I could well be living there now.

The last time I went to Flipper land I got a taxi back to my hotel in Makati, the driver thrn insisted I owed him way more than the originally quoted price, because of the traffic. After a bit of verbal jostling I paid him more than the quoted price but not as much as he asked. An hour or so later heavy banging on the door which I opened to be confronted with 3 cops. They alleged that I had broken the taxi door. While I had slammed it shut forcefully, I didn't break his door.
I was marched down the lobby to see the taxi driver and the broken door, sure enough the door glass was broken, but strangely no glass in the taxi, obviously he done it himself.
Cops were insisting I paid there and then, an outrageous price to repair the door.
luckily the hotel doorman intervened and supported me in saying, no damage that he witnessed and then offered to get the hotel manager down with the offer to the cops that the hotel would probably get some legal assistance on my behalf. the cops backed off in a hurry, told the Taxi driver to piss off. end of matter. The doorman got a very generous tip on my departure from the hotel.
Not been to the Phils since and no wish to go again ever.

I've always considered going to the phills but the stories have always put me off.

Unfortunately they just don't get any better.

I mean Thailand has its problems but the phills sounds so foked up its unbelievable.

The story bears similarities to a well-known incident in Chiang Mai, where SBF destroyed a hotel window and initially refused to pay damages, until the owner called the cops...

    When will you leave Thailand?
