That explains a lot of Backspin's posts about Thailand, anyway.

Thanks for the rest of the info.

Point being, as I understand it, is that while changing a visa is relatively straightforward, you cannot (easily) change a visa you do not have (if that makes sense).....

I arrived and entered on a visa exempt stamp and then went to the Immigration office (Buriram) and got a 60 day tourist Visa. During that 60 days I applied for the Non-O married visa.
I got the visa and then after 3 months (actually 2) extended it and am now into my third extension.
So yes I believe it can be done as I did it.
Anyway I don't know what a TM86 is but the main issue we had was getting the form (TM2 I think) that you get from the "amphur" to show your marriage is registered here in Thailand.
This part was difficult because we were married in Australia but we eventually got through it. It seems that now they need a "new" version of this form to show the marriage is still legal every time you apply for an annual extension.

You can change from either one. Without a visa it’s the TM87 form. With a visa it’s the TM86 form. Everything else is the same.

Yeah, I should have put inverted commas. The tourist exemption is referred to as a tourist visa even on some Ministry material though.

Fair point. But the thing is...things happen that aren't mentioned on official sites, as I'm sure you're aware.

EDIT: That looks a really good link, slick. Thanks.

That's probably the Kor Ror 2. (The marriage Cert is the Kor Ror 3)

20 baht at your local amphur that confirms you're still married.

When it comes to getting info on these sorts of things, it doesn't help when people call extensions 'visas' instead of extensions, which isn't surprising as most IOs also call extensions 'visas' instead of extensions.

Do they let in foreigner on a visa exempt now when they are opening up for visitors? I thought a tourist visa was minimum for that.

Yes - 45 days TVE to take account of quarantine, as I understand it.

They also have the 60 day extension for Covid running now.

So if there are any fok ups. You can get a 60 day extension based on Thai spouse, then get a 60 day extension based on Covid. Both available on any visa and a Visa Exemption.

So with 45 days arrival you're okay for 165 days before panicing. The Covid pandemic extension is likely to be continuingly available for the foreseeable future.

Alternative is driving to the embassy here twice along 'Death Valley' (believe me, Thai drivers don't seem at all bad in comparison) or leaving to Penang (if that's even possible), doing q'tine in Malaysia and returning for more q'tine in Thailand.

That's why I revived this thread - because I don't like either of those options in comparison to a ten minute drive in CM.

ok, so how long are you planning to stay in Thailand?
I agree with Mastercool that you can stay up to 165 days by getting two 60-days extensions at local immigration office (1900 baht each).
The 60-day covid extension has to be applied for before 29th of May, there is currently no info if there will be covid extensions after that.

OK, This is how I done it in March last year. Follow Slick's post about timeframe for applying.

    *Disclaimer about terminology and stuff

Landed in Bangkok and got 30-day visa exempt.
Went to immigration and done my tm30 (notify where you live). Immigration will not touch you until you have done this.
After 30 days I went back and got a 60-day extension for visiting family.

This is where it gets interesting...

18 days before my 60 day extension ran out, I went back to immigration to apply for a 90-day non-o based on marriage. You need this to convert to a 1-year extension.
The paperwork needed is as follows...

X2 photocopies of everything/take the originals with you.

400k in your own bank account (does not need seasoning)
Letter from bank confirming the balance
Every page of updated bankbook (transfer 100 baht to the missus first thing in the morning before the visit to the bank to show up to date account)
    Marriage cert
Updated Kor Ror 2 (ask the missus, she will know)
Colour pics of family together in living room, bedroom and outside the house showing the house number.
    Every page of passport
    Tabien baan (blue house book)
Missus ID card (front and back)
Hand-drawn map of my house to immigration
We even had to take our nanny with us as a witness (different immigration, different rules). She had to provide her ID card too.
    A couple of passport photos.
    All documents signed by yourself/missus

    I think that was all?

Once you get your 90 day, then bugger off home and chill for a bit because you have to repeat this process again for the extension.

For the 1-year extension, you need to apply min 15 days before the 90 runs out.

You will need the exact documents you used for the 90-day, but need to get another letter from the bank and update the bankbook again.
This time the 400k would have to be seasoned for a minimum of 2 months too.
Once applied, Immigration will put an 'under consideration' stamp in your passport and they will give you a date to come back to get your 1-year stamp.
Go back on the date required and you should be sorted.

...nearly forgot, you will also have to do a 90-day report around the same time as applying for your 1-year extension.

If any members want to chip in with anything that I've forgotten, be my guest.

^^ I'm about to do my first ever extension of a Non O based on marriage... I'd prefer to carry on with renewed annual multiple entry Non O visas but Covid has made that impossible.

I've been advised to do pretty much everything Bogon has mentioned above and went in to Korat immigration last week for a document check and all seemed OK.

My 90 days is up on April 14th, and because of losing 15 days to quarantine and then the time taken to open a bank account, the 400,000 Baht won't be seasoned until 10th April. This has made things tight (and the officer insisted it had to be seasoned), especially when considering that the 10th is a Saturday and the immigration office is closed most of the following week for Songkran. The immigration officer said I could go in for the extension on April 16th (two days after the date stamped in my passport), the first day they open after Songkran, without penalisation.

This Friday I need to get another re-affrimed Kor Ror 2 because I think they have to be dated within a week of extension application... but this was a 10 minute operation last time at the government offices in the city and each copy cost 10 Baht, so no problem.

My map to the house was an annotated screen grab from Google Maps, which they seemed happy with.

I have a slight complication in that my current passport runs out in October and I've heard nothing about the new passport application I made at Trendy a month ago... it seems that new UK passports are taking a long time to process at the moment. I have a second passport with around 5 years validity left which I'm hoping I can transfer my Non O into for the extension, but would have preferred to use a brand new passport to avoid confusion.

I don't think extensions are really the answer for me but I need to do this to see me through Covid until travel is easily possible again.

    Up to 10 weeks, apparently.

Processing British passport applications could take more than three times the usual waiting time as a result of an expected spike in demand, the Home Office has warned.

The Passport Office is telling travellers to allow up to 10 weeks to receive the document, up from three weeks previously.

On that timeline, someone applying on Wednesday might not receive their passport until 16 June.

It only needs to be seasoned when the extension is based on Thai spouse.

For an extension based on a Thai child it only needs to be in there on the day of the application. No need for the 2 months of seasoning.

However. Your Non-O multientry may have a note on top that it is for Thai spouse, some IO don't like giving an extension for anything other than the visa was granted for, but mostly it's just them being shits and trying to make you sweat while they have a moan at you. In your case it should be no problem getting a 12 month extension based on a Thai child with the 400k in the bank for only one day.
