Those of you who travel this route will be glad to know that they have finished sealing this section of the road...

I went through yesterday and everything was finished except for 50 metres which they were sealing as I drove through...

unfortunately the seal is a really low cost job and it won't last for long before the potholes start to appear...so enjoy it while you can

To go to Chum Chong from korat, there is a bus everyday from korat, the ride is 500 thb leaves at 7 or 8 morning, from Pasinee and return trip starts at 17hoo, you're back around 20h00...

For free ride, sorry no have, and casino in Poipet asked few years back 30 k change in chips and after even 40 k in chips for the free accomodation, but this is a couple of years back...

Well I nipped down to Prum and Pong Nam Rorn this weekend and everything is still the same, the road is now finished but has 2 bad spots of about 20 meters long with massive potholes in, to get there you need to take the Thap Sai Intersection, there are about 4 military/police inspection areas on the way there.

Cambodian Customs and Excise I have never seen open.

The back end of the Thai market in Pong Nam Rorn at the border.

Duty free at Prum on the Cambodian side hasn't changed much, 200baht for a carton of L&M's.

Great thread, and thanks for the pics and valuable info DD

so sorted, whoring in Pattaya this week-end, and then I can drive to the border on Monday, try the casinos and maybe buy a few tax free goods

How about short time in the Casinos or nearby ? this important info was left out from your report. I am disappointed.

I am assuming this is on the road to Chantaburi, correct ?

A bit of an update here:

    - There seems to be 3 or 4 border crossing on the same road, and you can't tell which one is which since all signs are in Thai. They are all 8km or 10km apart. I couldn't find Prum, so I went to one called Ban Laem

    - From Pattaya, it's still a solid 3 hours, about 250km total each way, so a long day trip.

    - Directions: Pattaya take Road 36 straight to Rayong then Road 3 straight to Chantaburi (170km) until the very end at the T section with Road 317. Take 317 (left) and keep going until Road 3193 (right), this is the road with the all the border crossing also called Thai-Cambodia Border Markets

    - Border Crossing: Road 3193 is OK except the road is in a VERY POOR state at some points. Not about to be finished for another year at the rate things are going over there. At about 42km, there is Ban Laem on the right.

    - Ban Laem Checkpoint: A complete shithole. It's not even a village, it's a fucking camp. Poor children begging and searching trash, wooden shops selling all kind of tax free crap, burning trash in the middle of the streets, a whorehouse the size of a shoebox etc... etc... a complete sense of cahos and disorganization

    - Visa Process: Very efficient. Nobody. I was the only farang. At the exit of Thai immigration, a nice Cambodian gentleman filled out all the papers for me for my Cambodian Visa and then took me at the nice Cambodian Immigration Office (a small wooden hut) where I was sitted nicely next to the official making my VISA. Gave them 1000 + 100 and then went to the border camp.

    - Border Camp: Gave the nice Cambodian gentleman who filled out my application another 100 and he took me around camp for buying a few things. Gave a few 20 to the poor kids around creating a riot. Shops selling a few interesting wine for less than 300 THB, your usual favorite bottles etc...

    - Pattaya: 6 hours later. Drinking and all night whoring. Total Cost for visa trip: 5200 THB

Conclusion: Great for Urgent Visa Trip but there are better ways to spend your day.

Anyone ever visit Poi Pet? Did that once and shall never do it again. Honestly, I'd rather scrap what ever money I have to get a cheap flight to Penang or some other way rather than Cambodia. Firstly, very similar to what Butterfly said in terms of condition, it broke my heart to see everything. Secondly, the corruption is disgusting - border guards are living very well charging what they wish and there are people on the border of starvation a stone's throw away from them. Land mine victims, prostitutes, children, etc. - very rough there....

We managed to find the Prum crossing last week. The Thai side is actually called Ban Pak Kad which is signposted from the Pong Nam Ron traffic lights.

About maybe 15kms down the road there is an army checkpoint - if you carry on from there you will see a sign to Ban Pak Kad on the right - don't take this one but take the next right (about 3kms from the army checkpoint). There is no sign in English but there is a blue sign in Thai.

Took us nearly 9 fucking hours round trip from Pattaya as we seemed to have found the only bloke in Thailand who drives below the speed limit at all times. Even the offer of an extra 500 baht wouldn't make him drive any faster.

And this after spending 8 hours at Samui airport the day before.

Still - I did enjoy Pattaya - never been before!

I still can't believe how slowly he drove! Nice bloke but had a serious phobia about overtaking anything. I kept falling asleep, waking up 1/2 an hour later and finding we had barely travelled any distance. And it was on my birthday as well, so he was seriously reducing our drinking time.

Do not confuse with Phu Nam Ron which is a Myanmar border near Kanchanaburi !
