DEGREES designed to widen higher education are to become available from Tesco.

The supermarket chain is to offer its own qualification in retail management, including the arts of display design, special offers and efficient shelf stacking. Teenagers may soon be able to study vocational courses to A-level standard at McDonald’s, a scheme announced in January, before going to Tesco for their degree.

The article does not mention when TEFL certification will be offered.

The McDonald's degree (with BM hons).

Year One:
Semester 1: Public appearance: How to use clearasil.
Ask: Do you want fries with that? (PASS)

Semester 2: Hygiene: Way of the Jiff mop
Use: Slippery when wet sign (PASS)

Semester 3: Environment: Alienation, boredom and weekend divorcees
How to: quit the course (PASS)

Jokes aside, McDonalds and Tesco seem to be very good at what they are doing. I guess there are worse employers to learn from.....

Furthermore, McDonalds has been operating a "Hamburger University" for some time now for leadership training. You may not like their products, but hundreds of millions of people do, and they are making a fortune on it.

Perhaps this is more about training than education. The latter is supposed to give you freedom and the former is aimed merely at making you a more productive employee.

I hear the McD's is teaching '101 parts of an old cow that you can describe as beef'. Tesco is showing trainees how to identify perfect fruit and veg. and where to store it away from customers until it's on the turn.

Is this degree accredited in anyway? Will big c give hiring preference to a tesco graduate over some bum off the street?
