Is this standard procedue in Thailand?

I was asked for some help on an end of school project. It was from an 18 yr old who has a uni place next year to study electronics.
Teacher has asked students to program an arduino to make a metal detector. All sounds fair enough, although I would have expected the project to be carried out in groups of 3 or 4 students. I would also expect the hardware to be supplied.

It turns out each student has to pay out around B1000 and learn about the Arduino without tuition. Not that easy when most don't understand enough English to program in C.

    Or....

...They can pay the teacher B5000 and get a pass for the project..

Apparently the rest of the class has opted for the latter option. The student I'm helping has bought the hardware and made a decent job of trying to program it. I am just breaking problem into bite size chunks so he can see where he went wrong.

Question: is this standard practice for Thailand?

I once heard the story of a woman who was interviewed by a friend of a friend for a job and the job ad had specified a high level of English. She had graduated from uni with top marks in English and glowing references from her tutors but was only able to say 3 words in the interview "I lady bitnit."

    T.I.T.

Btw, this thread is begging for the contributions of tax and seekingasylum.

...there are no standard practices for Thailand, no unified field theory of educational rationale or procedure, no safeguards against malpractice or malfeasance...only the truly inept are occasionally caught out and even then are given a multitude of "second chances"...and that is why local public instruction is regarded so poorly and why the Thai-Chinese have made so much money setting up private schools to educate their own spawn in various "tiered" institutions...still, uniforms and haircuts are the way to instill Thainess and proper respect toward elders...

Alas agree and corruption are endemic, the pricing dynamic as to what the market will bear be it Enron, Emission levels in German industry, temporarily muting Stormy Daniels, Wirecard or local exams.

    Volkswagen: The scandal explained

    What has been VW's response?

"We've totally screwed up," said VW America boss Michael Horn, while the group's chief executive at the time, Martin Winterkorn, said his company had "broken the trust of our customers and the public". Mr Winterkorn resigned as a direct result of the scandal and was replaced by Matthias Mueller, the former boss of Porsche.

    The Wirecard scandal (
German: Wirecard-Skandal) was a series of corrupt business practices and fraudulent financial reporting that led to the insolvency of Wirecard, a payment processor and financial services provider, headquartered in Munich, Germany. The company was part of the DAX

A couple of fixes to the hardware and a revamp of the software has got the basics working. The changes to the wiring were easy enough to explain since the idea was understood. The software was much harder to explain in a couple of hours and required lots of help in translation with Mrs Troy. It really needed a week of teaching with more example circuits. If I had known, I would have brought my Arduino boards over with some additional components like LEDs and switches to get each point across.
In the end, student was happy and says he can finish off the fine tuning and present to class. Saved himself B5000 as well!

...always a threat...showing up the teacher (who may not understand what he/she is looking at) requires an "educational" put down of an uppity student: disqualified because a) hair too long, b) pants too short, c) wrong shoes, d) it's Wednesday, etc...

The boy is quite industrious; he's worked through the holidays over the last year or so and saved enough money for a laptop. I helped him choose one last week. It seems he has already secured his Uni place and starts in a couple of months.
It appears this is an end of school project and this Teacher has put the "pass" fee up from B3500 last year.
The boy was never going to pay such a fee and was determined to learn how to complete the project. I just helped him achieve his goal.
One hopes the teacher shows some respect; worthy of a school prize IMO.

If he has talent as you say I hope he gets a scholarship and leaves a corrupt system where deference to older/richer /lighter skin or well connected.
The staus quo is terrified of democracy or meritocracy as it would expose the avaricious snouts bullies and "connected'. I do not imagine it will happen in my lifetime, in fact under Leekpai there seemed to be hope of moving slowly like S Korea from dictatorship into the middle income alternating elected regimes.

Of course in Germany the Leipziger and Dresdner Stasi guided by Putin was as brutal and repressive until 1990 . I had dealings with them, sent back to Prague and to be fair to the Thais they just want cash and or sexual favours, you don't have to believe in anything or join the commie version of the Hitler youth like Merkel. Politicians just say vote for us with no real manifesto other than our corrupt team will out promise the other.

Well done for helping a keen student I hope he learns from an internship in a civilized democratic Republic like Finland , Estonia, France, Switzerland, Czechia, Austria or Ireland where there is recognition and reward for talent and space to question authority tradition and religion.

    Joking aside.

We've got 3 legit doctorates here for $9,999 a pop, if Dill fancies moving up to the role of 'Bus conductor'.

I’m pretty sure it’s an all or nothing deal.
