Teaching salary with my current qualifications?

    Hello Everyone,

I started teaching in Thailand about 6 years ago and I've since returned to the UK. Naturally I have 6 years teaching experience.
I now have TEFL, PGCE and CELTA
I'm also a native English speaker.

I was wondering what kind of salary and job locations I should/could find with my qualifications?

I don't really want to be stuck on the same salary a new TEFL teacher (30-35k per month)

    I was thinking around 50k?

I've looked at the international schools, however they're mainly for standard subjects (i.e. based on England's national curriculum) which I'm not qualified to do.

    Thanks in advance

    Tony

In your opinion, what does your PGCE qualify you to do?

These threads always makes me a little sad.

To think a qualified teacher should be earning just over 1,000 pounds a month and is happy is very sad!

    Is it primary or secondary?
70k should be your minimum asking salary imo, I'd also look to get into a school that uses PYP

So how is the fishing going?. You using any chum, or is this chum? How about bait?. Lures of close to life bait? Hell if you are lucky you might catch a job at a government school.

Go back to England and get those qualifications and ask? Tide is high with an onshore breeze at 5am.

^Could be, but if he did a primary PGCE then he is not really qualified to teach secondary standalone subjects, although there is no harm in applying. 80% of the time it seems that urgent to fill positions are always for secondary level. Tough level to teach well imo

I did my PGCE before I started TEFL. It's in FE Performing arts and Popular music - there were no jobs at the time so I moved to TEFL.
Ironically, now there are very little of both job types available in the UK.

I'm kind of in a rut, since my PGCE didn't automatically give me QTS and secondary positions (in England) won't hire me, even on a Substitute role.

Loy Toy I understand where you're coming from and in the UK, I'd be very sad with £1000 salary.

I've seen international school salaries go anywhere from 60-160k THB

Just wondering what's the best route for me, as I enquired about TEFL jobs at some international school but they're only at Primary level. I'd ideally like to teach secondary in an international school somewhere in Thailand.

    Hi Tony,

    Welcome to the forum.

What part of the UK are you from?

Only asking as a lot of international schools prefer a native English speaker with an accent that they can understand.

That's why many International schools only employ Americans as they all sound the same the same to the rest of the world.

British people however are a mixed bag with Scouse, Geordie and Glaswegian accents being the most difficult to understand.

A parent who pays top dollar for their child to attend an international school won't want their child coming home and saying "Aye oop Pet, I'm hank marvin, chuck another Haggis on the barbie."

You know where i'm going with this.

Anyhow, best of luck and enjoy the forum, oh and grow a thick skin quickly

OK, so no QTS- I would be more flexible about countries, Thailand can be competitive. You'll be able to get a job over the border in Myanmar no trouble at all. 2-5000-3000USD with housing and flights and funds for medical evacuation in the very unlikely event that you need it.

I'm from Teesside, but I have a Durham accent. I've never had any problems with it when I taught in Thailand previously; and yes I fully understand - I'd be the same if I was paying that kind of money. Of course, one can always turn to Estuary English if needs be.
I looked at QTS but it's way too expensive (around £3500), and I'm unsure if I'd get a loan, since I already have a student loan. The other option a recruiter once said to me was to get some voluntary teaching experience in a secondary school and work my way in that way, but naturally I don't have the time to do any unpaid work at the moment.

Have any of you done DELTA? Would that be more worthwhile? I've heard it's more for heads of department roles etc.

I'd try and get a job in a second/third tier international school and use it as a place to do your PGCEi while you work- best option for you as I can see it.

Good luck bro , don't under estimate your value is may only tip.

There is a world full of vacancies, scour the net , teachers boaods get those interviews your cv is your ad.

Real businesses like Int School always have to fill as they've taken the fees, teachers drop out so being on the spot for tomorrow interview, teaching demo Monday start may give you the edge.Keep you plane receipt if you're a good enough negotiator might just get some of it refunded

Aim high nothing to lose. There are also Int Schools in Malaysia Vientiane Saigon and Yangon as well as LOS, don't forget FE and higher Education, Rajabhat here is like the Tech in UK or Luton Poly/Uni

There a place in Suburbs of BKK specialises in Arts part of Silpikorn at Nakhon Phanom, commutable from the E suburbs of BKK
    http://www.su.ac.th/en/faculty-arts.php

A young bright ambitious UK teacher with a PGCE will standout, ~Right or Wrong, unconventional appearance, dark skin , tattooes won't go down well here.

You can spot the new TEFL grindr on the BTS wearing same as insurance salesmen and Jehoofas Wetnurses
never repeat NER pay out to agents etc , You may end up in dungeon filling Pies on the Mal Bar Coast or with some lascar pilate slipping you porridge for kicks

If you have business acumen promoting a fake bomb detector detector would be top dollar, what ever you do don't end up on Jomyen beach offering your ass 4 peanuts or with a panhandlers sign in Hindi Strine and Thai

    ดูดสำหรับพาย

Who knows a whole load of kids may look forward to a Durham Light Infancy !!

PS The real top dollar snooty schools Scunthorpe International, Old Wankhymists, Etame College prefer refined southern British tone, so put on your best Bourmemouth Brogue and hobbies as thatch munching Polo and Trebor

You absolutely should still consider applying to international schools. It is unlikely that you'd land a position at one of the better-known British schools such as BPS, Harrow or Shrewsbury. However, many others--despite common perception--do hire teachers who do not have licenses in their home countries. I experienced this firsthand, as I landed a position for 63K/month at an international school when I first came to Thailand in 2008, and I only had a bachelor's degree in English. Only later did I go on to get a master's degree in education (which still didn't provide licensure in the United States where I'm from), and I now work at what is considered one of the best schools.

Visit the ISAT website (www.isat.or.th), go into the directory and narrow a search down to British-curriculums schools, and apply for open positions through their websites. You may get a few replies, and it's entirely possible that you'll get an offer. In a worst-case scenario, at least you get some additional interview experience.

I know there is an urgent vacancy at a school in Naypyidaw (Myanmar) About $2,400 per month tax-free, plus 4-star hotel accommodation and free flights/visas etc. Helps if you can also teach General Science and are totally celibate....
