I vote for Japan as well. The problem though is that as a tefler you don't make great money compared to the cost of living. If you could get into a higher tiered International School you'd be set, but I don't know if you have IB experience which is the 'in' thing these days.

I think you shouldn't write off mainland China or Hong Kong quite yet. There are literally thousands of jobs in both places and I think you can get a good gig. The saving potential at least in mainland China is quite good.

Got a bit more than just a random degree and a TEFL- put it this way, the job offers aren't from some random cram school. Hong Kong still appeals- finished the NET application- now I just need to find a working fax machine. Seems a little quirky that it can't be sent by email in this day and age, but there we go!. The turn off for mainland China for me is the pollution. I love to spend time outside in my free time. Heck, at work if a lesson would be made more interesting by having something active outside, I'll do it.

The offer from Japan is actually a forest school, so it's a little different from the regular teaching gigs out there. Good PD opportunities in Japan, in Kurdistan they are very limited- you get an allowance to attend workshops overseas.

Hah, but if I can survive here for five years, then anyone can!

Mandy, you may want to check the pollution of a place before you let that be your final decision. This year Beijing's pollution is better than Shanghai's pollution. Seems unreal, but yet that is what it is.

PD opportunities are good to have for sure.. Japan could be a nice change for you.

    That would be my choice.

HK is a great place, though if you don't like pollution forget it.

Of all places in China, HK has less pollution than most of the cities in mainland China.

That still means it's more polluted than almost anywhere else in the world outside China.

Um, okay, but he is saying that if you don't like pollution then forget HK. HK isn't very polluted as it is by the water. But, yeah if you base your decision solely on that then go for it.

Air pollution in Hong Kong is some of the worst in the world. That's a measurable scientific fact. In fact you appear to be only person in the world to say otherwise. What difference does being by the water make?

^Usually when you are by the water you get a breeze or current that seems to lessen pollution. At least that is what I've been told. Yes, there is air pollution in HK and certainly it is a factor. I'm just saying that if I were him I wouldn't base my whole decision on this. Obviously, it is Mandaloopy's decision in the long run.

^I'm sure he's still there till June at least, but what do I know.

If he is interested I could probably get him a job where I am. PM if interested, Mandaloopy. Cheers!

I would take KAR instead of China or HK.

No pollution to speak of, great cycling, open water swimming, cheap beer and a welcoming culture.

Available. But you’re expected to marry them afterwards. Very traditional. They stay at home, cook and make babies. There’s a few babes in the YPG fighting the turks and IS scum. I suspect they have higher standards than your average chinky ktv hostess though

A colleague of mine worked in Iraq until about six years ago.

He says he would have stayed there as the money was great, but as things got closer to normal, so the hardship allowance for being there was cut.

Now you probably still wouldn't feel too safe but you're not getting paid for the risk.

    My answer would be 'no'.

KAR is not really Iraq. Erbil and Sulemaniya are safer than Last donistan. They don’t put up with any shit from pesky Arabs like Sadiq Khant and his terrorist chums

KTV vs Kurdish music? At least the booze is cheaper in KAR to take the pain away
