    Overthinking it?

As you know, I live and teach in Myanmar. Last night I was thinking about how this would look on the ol' C.V. I'm working in a country where genocide is very much a reality- not just with the Rohingyas, but also many other minority groups around the country. It can't look good, willingly staying and collecting money where rape, murder and now forced starvation are acceptable!

"Why did you stay in Myanmar if you know they commit crimes against humanity?" That would be a difficult question.

95% sure I will be moving on in April- 2 years is a decent enough stint for me and I really don't want to settle here given the current political climate.

Yep ... way, way over thinking it.

Just think of a catchy two liner phrase along the lines of ...

Yes, prospective employer, my time in Myanmar wasn't ideal, but I had committed to a ***** teaching program which
needed to be seen though to the conclusion.

If I had ended it sooner, being selfish and thinking of MY personal beliefs and standards, it would have compromised the children's learning experience.

    ... or something like that

Many Europeans and Americans despise Europe and America for being less than perfect, so don't compare these to Myanmar. Cambodia was way more chaotic than Myanmar, but doing quite well even under a dictatorship.

Your decision, but makes sense to leave if you're at risk which you're probably not otherwise you would have left, or stay if you think you're useful.

Sounds good. You will be able to say you left (after fulfilling your contract) after finding out how bad things really are there.

Hardly anyone associates Myanmar with genocide. They're more likely to have never heard of it. Burma, on the other hand, they associate with tea plantations, Kipling, and Gin Fizzes on the verandah. You worry too much.

When I started working in Thailand people (including on TD) told me it would look bad on my CV as employers would associate it with sex and drugs. What a pile of crap. Employers are fascinated by it and my co-workers benignly jealous. For most of them a visit to Thailand is a once in a lifetime thing and Burma a place so exotic that they will never go there. I'm often told how lucky I've been to have worked in SE Asia while still young. I think your working in Myanmar will be an advantage and a talking point in your CV.

Got to agree. On the impossibly small chance it came up, I would answer along the lines of "none of the 5 year olds I was teaching admitted to taking part in any genocide".

If he's just begun to realize how nasty things are there, as it seems to be the current popular notion among those who take notice, he really hasn't been paying attention.

These types of brutal activities have been going on for years in Myanmar/Burma - xenophobic conflicts, wars, casual genocide, etc. without too much alarm or condemning from the outside world.

Yet, out of the blue, the current Rohingya situation has became the clarion fashion of hypocrisy.

    Meh...come off it, Mandy.

You don't want to settle there because you're bored and the money isn't good enough to compensate.

If they added 50% to your dosh or redeveloped the downtown area to feature 'Patterzland' you'd be like a pig in shit.'

It's a giveaway question that you should hope for!
"I stayed because I felt that I was doing my small bit in enlightening the students. Awareness and critical thinking, I felt, was the best thing I could do for the upcoming generation, and maybe to a degree the student's parents".

If asked you provide that; You are teaching children in the hopes of broadening their horizons, teaching the to think as opposed to training them to accept, you are teaching in a most troubling location with the hopes of improving the future.

In your next interview. Look the dude directly in the eye and use this Rambo quote - "There isn't one of us that doesn't want to be someplace else. But this is what we do, who we are. Live for nothing, or die for something. Your call."

    Thank me later...

That's a very valid point, it would indeed make me happy. Good shot! Being "bored" is a massive part of the problem here- seems to be what makes it a 2 year gig for most folks.

Thanks for all the advice- some good tips and thoughts- appreciate it!

Helping to contribute to the eradication of Islam one orphan a a time, now time to move on.

It was always a temporary gig, with a leading NGO and not BJs for buggas in MacDonals, All my students were 9/10 stunners and I'll return as I always planned to TC to thatched BMW fully toaded and ,my Italian/Singaporean/Chinese-Thai katoey/hi so tart and berate low life sexpats. You've never really seen life until you've clapped out in Man delay.

Think that'll swing it, good news TEFL mongers always in demand in LOS seems despite higher standards even some of the expats have declining English.

Why would it matter? Do bankers, hr monkeys, estate agents, lawyers, politicians, and oilmen's CVs have to be wrung dry of the tears of guilt?!
Surely the profession is that desperate for teachers in most of the world, those experiences would be seen as an asset?
...anyway, aren't most countries in the world like that? The world is a mean ol' place...

No one would associate everyone who lived or did work in a country with some government. This is a weird concern, no one would ever do that anywhere.
