I was under the impression that oral English was going to be taught,though with asking son,have found that he has an English lesson 1 hr a day,the teachers are from either UK or US,though there is only around 2-3 minutes speaking per day.

Seems there our Televisions that they watch and notes handed out at the start of class,which I've seen and considering where we are the level of English is very minimal.

English is only taught in the English lesson.

I'm looking around for an English teacher presently for oral tuition he speaks well though when,I'm not here it seems to go backwards.

Its pretty much what i heard years ago from an English teacher i knew.

But if you can't afford an international school or decent private school to get your own kids educated in why wouldn't you put your kids first and move back to the West to get them a decent education, Thailand will still be here when your kids finish their education. I had one year of my daughter in a Thai private school and that was enough for me, returned to UK when she was 5, 13 now in top set for everything and doing well.

Provide him with English kids videos or encourage him to watch them on Youtube daily (if you have a decent Internet connection there).

or possibly what the teachers are told to teach,seems they had a good English teacher,though not sure what happened he moved on.

From what i heard he didn't suit there teaching methods.my son has him on his FB page may well ask hin.

Are you seriously going to try and portray Thai state schools as somehow better than or equivalent to UK state schools in terms of standards of education received, if so then you've lost the plot and live in some alternate reality.

Anyway, Chico, if you are around for your son, you will be the best English teacher for him. Spend time with him, talk to him in English, watch English videos together, read together, teach, help or encourage him to write in English, even when you are away. Get him to write to you and ask him to send it to you, even if it means taking a photo of the text and sending it by email or LINE or something like that. Ask him about his school lessons, get him to try to tell you what he did or what the teacher taught him that day or that week. Ask him what he has been doing in his free time. Help him with his English as you go along. All that will be free. No need to hire a teacher.

My wife's cousin who is a teacher in the local school sends her kid to the same school as us about 7kms away so there must be something in it

Sit with him and watch cartoons or Marvel movies together in English...

Put in the lad in a position where he wants to share his ideas with you and he'll learn the language to do it when he sees you're there to listen and share as well.

We do all that now,though its me that doesn't always have the time to follow up,my hours are long and with the time difference and connections can be a pain.

though when at home all goes well.

Daughter goes to same School she's 5yrs and seems the teachers are amazed at her English.

wheras my son is laid back and takes after mum,she on the other hand is constantly asking questions and wanting to know everything.

Thanks CS for the positive input, we do that now.

One great benefit of the heretibility of IQ is reversion to the mean.

Do you use LINE? You can send audio messages. Get him to talk into the phone and send the messages. You can then listen to them when you are free and send him some back in return. Same with writing, he can send a photo of what he has written. You can write a message back and he can read it. Reading, writing, listening, speaking.

Good for her.

Either:

a) Homeschool them yourself and pay for a Thai teacher to come 8-10 hrs p/w week for the Thai stuff. Enroll for the iGCSE etc. to get those qualifications. Exams (and tutorial courses) are held in CM or BKK.

b) Send them to an International School.

C) Take them back to the Uk.

Just an observation, Chico was a member on a Thai teachers forum, Ajarn I believe, he asks for advice on Thai schooling on TD and it appears only Long standing TD members have responded.

Quality of life as Jimbob mentioned and Nirvana are the best points.

Nothing worse than putting your kids through a school, decent ot not, while having to sit in 3hr plus daily traffic as many do.

We're fortunate that our school is only is 6km away (international). If it was a Thai or program offering English, we would have still enrolled as we believe spending time at home is crucial.

She was taught at home previously. This is her second semester at school and she is in 2 grades above her age because her level is high. Personally, I think homeschooling for the 1st year is the reason. If her level tapers off, I will homeschool her again as a priority.
