Nice thing about this thread besides raising awareness to Climate Change is that it draws the mentally incompetent out of the woodwork.
says the increasingly deranged florida loan shark with one of the largest carbon footprints in the west.

No. But at least be honest about it and stop trying to make pathetic excuses using Big Oil-funded think tanks.

who are neither no less nor no more biased than the views of the thunbergian changeologist think tanks that dominate this thread , so why not include views, or as you incorrectly said, excuses, from the other side?

    Because climate change is science.

Big Oil is disinformation - for a reason.

Bullshit. This thread is 255 pages long and most of my, landreth and Harry's posts here have been spent countering a fucking tidal wave of fake science, lies and fabrications coming entirely from the right wing lunatic fringe as well as big oil propaganda. On the other side is reason, science and rational humanity.

FFS sake let got of your misogynistic petty hatred of a passionate, driven, well reasoned young women. The truth is this thread is science vs right-wing lunacy and greedy big oil interests.

The year so far has been one of extremes, featuring record-shattering heatwaves, wildfires and flooding, as well as the warmest-ever northern-hemisphere summer – June, July and August – in the global land-surface record.

    • Gavin Schmidt - Estimates for where 2021 will end up in global temperatures are at the low end of what I predicted at the end of 2020 (based just on ENSO and trend). Looking like it’ll be the 6th or 7th warmest.: https://twitter.com/ClimateOfGavin/s...43027819417600

What do we need to achieve at COP26?

    1. Secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach
    2. Adapt to protect communities and natural habitats
    3. Mobilise finance
    4. Work together to deliver

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

    some are at it again……..

    • Dr. Zeke Hausfather - I've seen some folks claim the world has been cooling or warming has "paused" over the past six years.

There is year-to-year variability due to El Nino/La Nina cycles, but this variability is incidental to the staggeringly obvious long-term warming trend in the data.: https://twitter.com/hausfath/status/1453436135615594503

    G20 & COP26 related news……..

Young residents of the world’s richest, most powerful nations paused their mobile gaming devices to voice their support for bold climate action in their countries — urging the deployment of electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies in a new poll released by the United Nations.

Some 302,000 individuals ages 14-17 made their opinions heard in the G20 Peoples’ Climate Vote, which surveyed more than 689,000 people from October 2020 through June 2021 across Group of 20 (G20) member nations. And to reach as broad a population as possible, the researchers recruited respondents by placing advertisements in mobile gaming networks.

The widest generational gap they discovered was in Australia and the U.S., where “under-18s” ranked 10 percentage points higher than adult respondents regarding general recognition of the climate emergency. That gap was at its greatest when it came to support for electric vehicles and renewable energy — 13 percentage points in the U.S. for electric vehicles, and 10 percentage points for renewable energy.

Adults were more in favor of funding green businesses and jobs than the younger cohort was, with the most support coming from adults in the U.K. (74 percent), followed by Australia, Canada and Germany (all 68 percent). Among the under-18s, support was the highest in Australia (73 percent).

More adults than young people also demanded that companies pay for the pollution they produced — a finding that surprised the authors, and which they said indicated a need for more public education. The findings were most severe in Indonesia, Japan and Saudi Arabia, where less than a third of under-18s wanted polluters to pay.

For both adults and under-18s, curbing the use of fossil fuels was a popular policy in the U.K., Australia, Canada, France and Germany, but had much lower levels of support elsewhere — with just 30 percent of adults and Saudi Arabia and India in favor of this policy.

Despite stronger climate policy and higher ambition in the latest national pledges, there is still a large gap between near-term commitments under the Paris Agreement and what would be needed to limit warming to well-below 2C and aim for below 1.5C.

The new report finds that, while 121 countries have submitted updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the terms of the Paris Agreement in the lead-up to the COP26 summit in Glasgow, the effect of these is relatively limited.

While global fossil CO2 emissions in 2021 are projected to remain about 1% below 2019 levels, a number of countries including China, Russia and Brazil are expected to exceed their pre-pandemic 2019 levels this year.

The figure below, from the new UNEP report, shows the change in national emissions during 2019-2020 (pink bars) and between 2019 and 2021 (purple). China plays a large role in holding up the global total this year, with roughly an 8% rise projected relative to 2019 levels.

I have a doubt about climate change that no one is prepared to answer!

We've had one and a half years of minimal air travel.
Air travel being the biggest polluter on the planet.

The world has had a long overdue break, rest and recuperation.
    Yet natural disasters still continue.
I fear this climate change bandwagon is oversubscribed..

    Not true

Aviation accounts for about 2.5% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions

During a telephone call with the UK PM, the Chinese General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and Chairman of the Central Military Commission since 2012, and President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping reminded the UK PM of China's commitments.

Xi Jinping Speaks with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the Phone

    2021/10/29

    The relevant paragraph:

"Xi Jinping underlined, China has announced the goal to peak carbon dioxide emissions and achieve carbon neutrality, and proposed a series of concrete measures to scale up its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions.

This means that a wide range of profound economic and social reforms need to be accomplished step by step and with hard efforts. China is determined to accelerate green and low-carbon development, and we always honour our pledges.

China supports Britain in playing its role as Presidency of the Twenty-sixth Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, upholding the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, and encouraging all parties to translate their lofty ambitions into concrete actions."

As we have seen this year in Europe and elsewhere, some countries have been unable to produce enough powers due to their inability to utilise their investments in alternate power producing installed solutions. The reasons are multiple.

China on the other hand has been, mainly, been able to continue to supply its global markets with delivery of many products, as indicated with its financial indicators.

It appears China understands that substituting one energy solution with another takes' skill, planning and time.

For those countries who have now entered the post-industrial world or whose manufacturing capacity has already been devastated, there are obvious reasons for a revised "promise" may be published.

For the producing countries upon which these countries depend, they have plans which they are and have stated, they will deliver.

It is too early to say who will and will not deliver the stated commitments.

Big oil doesn't have a problem with climate change. They are funding wind farms and solar. Because they know these technologies are inadequate and are not threatening in any way. Nuclear power though ? Its a totally different story. Nuclear can take gobs of market share from oil.

Are Fossil Fuel Interests Bankrolling The Anti-Nuclear Energy Movement?

It’s ironic and begs the question of why the traditional environmental movement is so vehemently opposed to nuclear energy, especially since it is the only fuel that can burn around the clock without releasing any carbon emissions. While this writer has had good relations among all those along the environmental continuum for 16 years, critics will maintain that it is the fossil fuel interests that have bankrolled some of the legacy groups.

In 1970, a leader of the petroleum industry and the head of the Atlantic Richfield Co. named Robert O. Anderson contributed $200,000 to fund Friends of the Earth, an organization that is strident in its opposition to nuclear energy, citing both safety and cost issues. The topic is part of a book by F. William Engdahl titled Century of War: Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Orders, says Rod Adams, author of the blog Atomic Insights.

The oil industry had long-been concerned that “atomic fission” could replace oil, or at a minimum, significantly undercut its price. Fission occurs when an atom is split into two parts and it results in the generation of electricity from a nuclear power plant.

    And continues…………

Lawmakers question oil executives on climate disinformation - Los Angeles Times

House panel plans to subpoena oil companies as executives are grilled on climate disinformation

Democratic lawmakers denounced the leaders of the some of the world’s largest oil companies Thursday, accusing executives of Exxon Mobil, BP, Shell and Chevron of spending decades downplaying, or outright denying, the scientific consensus that burning fossil fuels causes climate change.

The hearing by the House Oversight Committee marked the first time that members of Congress have directly questioned oil and gas executives, under oath, about their companies’ reported efforts to mislead the public about the causes of global warming.

Democrats on the committee also criticized the executives for publicly trumpeting their work to reduce carbon emissions while privately funding lobbying groups such as the American Petroleum Institute and the Chamber of Commerce, which have sought to block President Biden’s environmental policies.

    Any doubts about Climate Change?-floating_solar-5_0-jpg

BANGKOK: From the shoreline, the newest piece of Thailand’s renewable energy future is just a shimmer in the distance. The pure scale of this ambitious project is difficult to appreciate from afar.

Forty years ago, the face of this land was shaped by the construction of the Sirindhorn Dam, a then-controversial project designed to provide hydropower and irrigation water to the area. Once again, enterprise is harnessing nature here.

The reservoir is now home to the world’s largest hybrid solar-hydropower project. Installed on the surface of the water are 144,000 separate solar panels, the equivalent of 100 football fields.
The 45 megawatts of peak power the project can produce complements the existing dam operations, which can generate an additional 36MW, and provide electricity across three provinces in eastern Thailand.
The solar panels can make electricity throughout the day while the sun shines, and the hydropower dam can operate at night. Both share the same existing grid transmission lines and transformers.

It is the first of what could be many similar floating solar panel projects rolled out across Thailand, as the country takes early steps to decarbonise its energy sector.

The emerging technology is showing promise and generating interest throughout Southeast Asia. In Singapore, a similar solar panel scheme is operational on Tengeh Reservoir, while plans are underway to rollout similar projects in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

This project in Ubon Ratchathani province helps with one of the biggest issues associated with solar power infrastructure development, the scarcity and cost of land.
The surface of the dam is normally unused, except for small-scale local fishing, which can continue even after the installation of the panels.
“Overall, floating PV (photovoltaics) is cheaper compared to a solar farm. We save the land costs and we save the land for Thailand,” said Prasertsak Cherngchawano, a deputy governor of Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the state body in charge of the project.
