University banned beef because a fashion expert declared a ‘climate emergency’

Refuses to say which other foods with ’emission-intensity’ remain on menu

When Goldsmiths, University of London was looking for a new leader who would reorient its fight against climate change, it looked past those who were conventionally qualified, such as environmental scientists.

The British university chose someone with more intuitive insights: a fashion expert.

Frances Corner (above) assumed the role of warden at the British university this month, a position equivalent to vice chancellor. And the newcomer wasted little time exerting her full authority to respond to the “climate emergency.”

She banned beef from Goldsmiths’ campus and enacted the equivalent of a 12-cent tax on water bottles and single-use plastic cups – decisions that may bring to mind the regulatory overreach that led the United Colonies to break free from Britain.

It’s part of Goldsmiths’ plan to become a “carbon neutral organisation” by 2025, according to an announcement by the university.

Corner is also pledging to install “significantly more” solar panels and switch to a “100% clean energy supplier as soon as practicable.” She wants to make courses on climate change and carbon emission reduction more accessible to students, though the university does not specify the curricula of these programs, or which academic departments will foster them.

Goldsmiths’ press office has ignored several College Fix requests to explain how the food menu is changing beyond the removal of beef, specifically what items will remain that are also considered environmentally harmful.

The United Kingdom’s Committee on Climate Change says that most greenhouse gases produced by British farms come from lamb, beef and dairy production, according to CNN. Corner herself shared an opinion piece arguing that milk should also be banned from campus.

Good to see you're finally coming around to the challenges and issues of anthropomorphic climate change, Repeater.

    You've misunderstood what 'anthropomorphic' means.

And you'd better hang on with your interpretation of rpeter's post anyway.

He might take that link to mean 'the more sunshine the better, so let's carry on destroying the ozone layer'.

No one talks about the ozone layer now days, that was also proved to be fake, the alarmists now chant climate change.
That can also be proven to be fake.

The United Kingdom’s Committee on Climate Change says that most greenhouse gases produced by British farms come from lamb, beef and dairy production,
...and how much greenhouse gas is that as a percentage of the total? Oh wait nobody knows but they still need a knee jerk reaction.

    You're obviously another uneducated moron.

What actually happened is that they admitted to and identified the problem in 1987 and agreed to take the steps necessary to solve it.

98% of ozone depleting emissions like CFCs have been banned (only the chinkies kept spewing the stuff on the sly and they stopped it when they were caught).

So it wasn't "fake", it was fixed.

Which is precisely what needs to happen with climate change.

    Try harder.

    Also 'fixed' is relative.

Spend 30 min outside in NZ without sunscreen mid-summer and come back and tell me it's not real.

Well he's lying from the off because he's created a straw man.

No-one has said it is "dead". No-one has said it has been "smothered with sediment" either.

    Sensationalist claptrap.

No wonder the fucking idiot got sacked.

Well what a surprise. Another "denier for hire".

    August 12, 2019
Ridd presented a lecture based on the rejection of scientific findings that Australia’s sugarcane industry was damaging the Great Barrier Reef.

Ridd’s appearance was sponsored by the Queensland CANEGROWERS association, which opposed legislation to enact new water quality enforcement measures aimed at protecting the Reef from industrial runoff.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies supported the legislation, while the industry and Ridd claimed that it would be bad for business.

Science: Umm guys, we’ve got a bit of a problem here...
Deniers: Conspiracy! Tax! Al Gore’s millions! It’s cold today, no climate change!
Polluting Industry: Hey look, a squirrel!
    Deniers: Ooooh!

Not quite sure how you fake an Ozone hole. Ozone is one of the easy molecules to detect in the atmosphere and is regularly monitored by commercial aircraft, balloons from around the globe and with sattellites. The chances of being able to report fake holes is nigh on impossible with current detection methods.
It is true the ozone hole closure is slowing more than scientific prediction but it has been found our chinese friends have still been using CFC 11 (Trichloroflouromethane) as a blowing agent for insulation a practice which stopped in the west over 20 years ago. The other problem with CFC 11 is that it has a GWP of 4660 as referenced to CO2 which has a GWP (global warming potential) of 1.

One of the downsides of the internet:

People can put up a website spouting a complete load of bollocks and there are gullible old fools like repeater that lap it up.

Was this not a clue you doddery old cretin?

PARIS: Greenhouse gases thrust into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels are warming Earth's surface more quickly than previously understood, according to new climate models set to replace those used in current UN projections, scientists said Tuesday.

By 2100, average temperatures could rise 6.5 to 7.0 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels if carbon emissions continue unabated, separate models from two leading research centres in France showed.

That is up to two degrees higher than the equivalent scenario in the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change's (IPCC) 2014 benchmark 5th Assessment Report.

The new calculations also suggest the Paris Agreement goals of capping global warming at "well below" two degrees, and 1.5C if possible, will be harder to reach, the scientists said.

"With our two models, we see that the scenario known as SSP1 2.6 -- which normally allows us to stay under 2C -- doesn't quite get us there," Olivier Boucher, head of the Institute Pierre Simon Laplace Climate Modelling Centre in Paris, told AFP.

With barely one degree Celsius of warming so far, the world is already coping with increasingly deadly heat waves, droughts, floods and tropical cyclones made more destructive by rising seas.

A new generation of 30-odd climate models known collectively as CMIP6 -- including the two unveiled Tuesday -- will underpin the IPCC's next major report in 2021.

"CMIP6 clearly includes the latest modelling improvements," even as important uncertainties remain, Joeri Rogelj, an associate professor at Imperial College London and an IPCC lead author, told AFP.

These include increased supercomputing power and sharper representations of weather systems, natural and man-made particles, and how clouds evolve in a warming world.

"We have better models now," said Boucher. "They have better resolution, and they represent current climate trends more accurately."

A core finding of the new models is that increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere will warm Earth's surface more easily than earlier calculations had suggested.

If confirmed, this higher "equilibrium climate sensitivity", or ECS, means humanity's carbon budget -- our total emissions allowance -- is likely to shrink.

The French models are among the first to be released, but others developed independently have come to the same unsettling conclusion, Boucher confirmed.

"The most respected ones -- from the United States, and Britain's Met Office -- also show a higher ECS" than the previous generation of models, he said.

This is bad news for fight against global warming, which continues to face strong political headwinds and institutional inertia despite a rapid crescendo of public awareness and concern.

"A higher ECS means a greater likelihood of reaching higher levels of global warming, even with deeper emissions cuts," Boucher and two British scientists -- Stephen Belcher from the UK Met Office and Rowan Sutton from the UK National Centre for Atmospheric Science -- wrote in a blog earlier this year, tiptoeing around the implications of the new models.

"Higher warming would allow less time to adapt and mean a greater likelihood of passing climate 'tipping points' such as thawing of permafrost, which would further accelerate warming."

A third to 99% of top-layer permafrost could melt by 2100 if carbon pollution is not abated, releasing billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the air, according to a draft IPCC special report on oceans and Earth's frozen zones obtained by AFP.

"Unfortunately, our global failure to implement meaningful action on climate change over recent decades has put us in a situation where what we need to do to keep warming to safe levels is extremely simple," said Rogelj.

"Global greenhouse gas emissions need to decline today rather than tomorrow, and global CO2 emissions should be brought to net zero."

The 2014 basket of climate models show Earth warming on current trends an additional 3C by 2100, and at least 2C even if national carbon cutting pledges are all met.

The two French climate models, including one from France's National Centre for Meteorological Research (CNRM), were to be unveiled at a press conference in Paris.

I think changing the name from Global warming to climate change has just confused the issue. On one hand the talk is about global warming gases and how much the world is expected to warm and the name is changed to a much less specific, "climate change" which in name sounds much less menacing and does not accurately state the problem. We are not concerned with the climate changing it does this constantly the only worry is increased temperatures and the name takes away from the problem with a much more non threatening generic term. My opinion anyway.
