Young residents of the world’s richest, most powerful nations paused their mobile gaming devices to voice their support for bold climate action in their countries — urging the deployment of electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies in a new poll released by the United Nations.
Some 302,000 individuals ages 14-17 made their opinions heard in the G20 Peoples’ Climate Vote, which surveyed more than 689,000 people from October 2020 through June 2021 across Group of 20 (G20) member nations. And to reach as broad a population as possible, the researchers recruited respondents by placing advertisements in mobile gaming networks.
The widest generational gap they discovered was in Australia and the U.S., where “under-18s” ranked 10 percentage points higher than adult respondents regarding general recognition of the climate emergency. That gap was at its greatest when it came to support for electric vehicles and renewable energy — 13 percentage points in the U.S. for electric vehicles, and 10 percentage points for renewable energy.
Adults were more in favor of funding green businesses and jobs than the younger cohort was, with the most support coming from adults in the U.K. (74 percent), followed by Australia, Canada and Germany (all 68 percent). Among the under-18s, support was the highest in Australia (73 percent).
More adults than young people also demanded that companies pay for the pollution they produced — a finding that surprised the authors, and which they said indicated a need for more public education. The findings were most severe in Indonesia, Japan and Saudi Arabia, where less than a third of under-18s wanted polluters to pay.
For both adults and under-18s, curbing the use of fossil fuels was a popular policy in the U.K., Australia, Canada, France and Germany, but had much lower levels of support elsewhere — with just 30 percent of adults and Saudi Arabia and India in favor of this policy.

Despite stronger climate policy and higher ambition in the latest national pledges, there is still a large gap between near-term commitments under the Paris Agreement and what would be needed to limit warming to well-below 2C and aim for below 1.5C.
The new report finds that, while 121 countries have submitted updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the terms of the Paris Agreement in the lead-up to the COP26 summit in Glasgow, the effect of these is relatively limited.
While global fossil CO2 emissions in 2021 are projected to remain about 1% below 2019 levels, a number of countries including China, Russia and Brazil are expected to exceed their pre-pandemic 2019 levels this year.
The figure below, from the new UNEP report, shows the change in national emissions during 2019-2020 (pink bars) and between 2019 and 2021 (purple). China plays a large role in holding up the global total this year, with roughly an 8% rise projected relative to 2019 levels.

As we have seen this year in Europe and elsewhere, some countries have been unable to produce enough powers due to their inability to utilise their investments in alternate power producing installed solutions.The reasons are multiple.
China on the other hand has been, mainly, been able to continue to supply its global markets with delivery of many products, as indicated with its financial indicators.
It appears China understands that substituting one energy solution with another takes' skill, planning and time.
For those countries who have now entered the post-industrial world or whose manufacturing capacity has already been devastated, there are obvious reasons for a revised "promise" may be published.
For the producing countries upon which these countries depend, they have plans which they are and have stated, they will deliver.
It is too early to say who will and will not deliver the stated commitments.

BANGKOK: From the shoreline, the newest piece of Thailand’s renewable energy future is just a shimmer in the distance. The pure scale of this ambitious project is difficult to appreciate from afar.
Forty years ago, the face of this land was shaped by the construction of the Sirindhorn Dam, a then-controversial project designed to provide hydropower and irrigation water to the area. Once again, enterprise is harnessing nature here.
The reservoir is now home to the world’s largest hybrid solar-hydropower project. Installed on the surface of the water are 144,000 separate solar panels, the equivalent of 100 football fields.
The 45 megawatts of peak power the project can produce complements the existing dam operations, which can generate an additional 36MW, and provide electricity across three provinces in eastern Thailand.
The solar panels can make electricity throughout the day while the sun shines, and the hydropower dam can operate at night. Both share the same existing grid transmission lines and transformers.
It is the first of what could be many similar floating solar panel projects rolled out across Thailand, as the country takes early steps to decarbonise its energy sector.
The emerging technology is showing promise and generating interest throughout Southeast Asia. In Singapore, a similar solar panel scheme is operational on Tengeh Reservoir, while plans are underway to rollout similar projects in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
This project in Ubon Ratchathani province helps with one of the biggest issues associated with solar power infrastructure development, the scarcity and cost of land.
The surface of the dam is normally unused, except for small-scale local fishing, which can continue even after the installation of the panels.
“Overall, floating PV (photovoltaics) is cheaper compared to a solar farm. We save the land costs and we save the land for Thailand,” said Prasertsak Cherngchawano, a deputy governor of Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the state body in charge of the project.
