Arctic heat roasts Finland and Russia, melts sea ice

An intense and expansive heat wave has gripped parts of Siberia, northwestern Russia and Scandinavia, inducing a record plunge in sea ice cover in the Laptev Sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean.

Why it matters: Due largely to human activities such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation, the Arctic is warming at a rate more than twice as fast as the rest of the globe.

The details: In parts of north-central Siberia, temperatures have reached 45°F above average for this time of year, while other parts of Arctic Russia and Scandinavia have baked in record heat as well.

    • Some of these same areas saw record heat and wildfires grip the landscape and melt adjacent sea ice last year.
    • In Helsinki, the temperature did not drop below 72.5°F on the night of June 21-22, setting the national record for the highest minimum temperature recorded in June.
    • Several locations in Finland set monthly June high-temperature records, and the national June record almost fell Tuesday.
    • Record heat also affected Belarus and Latvia.

What's next: Scientists are keeping close tabs on climate trends in Siberia due to the massive amounts of carbon and methane stored in now-melting areas of permafrost.

    • Also, researchers are monitoring the 2021 Arctic sea ice melt, which will hit its annual minimum extent in September or early October.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

    • Copernicus – June 2021 was the 4th warmest June (tied with June 2018) on the ERA5 record (behind 2019, 2020, 2016).

    Globally, June 2021 was:

0.21°C warmer than the 1991-2020 average for June
cooler by about 0.15°C than the Junes of 2019 and 2020
broadly similar in temperature to the then-exceptional June of 1998 and the Junes from 2015 to 2018, though not quite as warm as June 2016
warmer than any other June in the data record.

    • about 330,000 km² less the 2010s mean
    • about 1,130,000 km² less the 2000s mean
    • about 1,880,000 km² less the 1990s mean
    • about 2,560,000 km² less the 1980s mean

North America just had its hottest June in temperature records that date back to the 1800s, researchers with the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said Wednesday.

Why it matters: Their monthly analysis helps contextualize the late-month heatwave that saw many temperature records shattered.

"These heatwaves are not happening in a vacuum. They are happening in a global climate environment that is warming and which makes them more likely to occur," Copernicus scientist Julien Nicolas tells AFP.

Human-induced climate change dramatically increases the odds, severity, extent and longevity of extreme heat events.

By the numbers: June in North America was 1.2°C above the 1991-2020 average. Until last month, the warmest June on record in North America was in 2012 at 1.05°C above that three-decade average, they said.

On a worldwide basis, Copernicus said: "June 2021 joins June 2018 as the fourth warmest June on record globally, after the Junes of 2016, 2019 and 2020."

Catch up fast: Last month saw many records fall, often by large margins. That included Portland, Oregon hitting hit 116°F (roughly 46.7°C) and Lytton, British Columbia reaching 121°F (or 49.4°C). That town was devastated by a wildfire the day after that peak.

President Biden urged immediate actions on climate change on Wednesday, saying "[w]e can't wait any longer to deal with climate crisis" during an event promoting his Build Back Better agenda

Driving the news: The U.S. is currently facing an extreme heat wave and heavy wildfires in the West, a deadly drought and the the earliest fifth-named Atlantic tropical storm on record currently going through the Southeast.

The calamities playing out across the country may have repercussions in Washington as lawmakers debate potentially huge investments for the country's aging infrastructure, per Axios' Andrew Freedman.

White House climate adviser Gina McCarthy told Punchbowl News earlier Wednesday that the current climate-related events ravaging the U.S. "are things that remind us that time is running out here."

What he's saying: "Last year ... more than 10 million acres burned in the West, 10 million acres, not counting the lives lost and homes lost," Biden said. "[That is] more land that exists in my home state of Delaware and my neighbor state of Maryland combined. It's as if a fire swept through and took out every single thing in the state of Delaware and Maryland."

"Extreme weather isn't just in the West. In Illinois, farmers downstate are dealing with more frequent droughts. Two weeks ago, just south of here, you just had a newly unprecedented tornado," the president added.

"We can't wait any longer to deal with climate crisis, we see with our own eyes, and it's time to act."

    First things first…….

June 2021 was the hottest June on record for U.S

Exceptional heat waves from coast to coast helped push June 2021 to the No. 1 spot on the list of hottest Junes on record for the U.S.

The first six months of 2021 also brought eight billion-dollar weather disasters, ranging from destructive severe weather to a historic deep freeze, according to experts from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

Below are more highlights from NOAA's U.S. monthly climate report for June:

    Climate by the numbers/June 2021

The average June temperature across the contiguous U.S. was 72.6 degrees F (4.2 degrees above average), making it the hottest June in 127 years of record keeping and surpassing the record set in June 2016 by 0.9 of a degree.

Eight states — Arizona, California, Idaho, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Utah — also saw their hottest June on record. Six other states — Connecticut, Maine, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming — marked their 2nd hottest June.

The average June precipitation across the U.S. was 2.93 inches, matching exactly the historical average for the month, though some states had extremes in rainfall — either too much or too little. For example, South Dakota saw its driest June on record while Mississippi had its second wettest.

    • NASA – June 2021 was the 3rd warmest June recorded. January – June 2021 8th warmest recorded.

US and Germany launch climate partnership

The U.S. and Germany on Thursday launched a partnership to collaborate on climate issues.

A fact sheet released by the White House said that the countries will work together to raise global climate ambition, collaborate on developing and deploying energy technologies and boost clean energy in developing countries.

“The United States and Germany will invest in a sustainable economy that drives inclusive growth, supports communities, and creates good jobs and a healthy environment on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond,” the fact sheet said.

    FACT SHEET

    Germany Climate and Energy Partnership

President Biden and Chancellor Merkel today at the White House launched the U.S.-Germany Climate and Energy Partnership. As part of our ongoing work together on addressing the threat of climate change, this Partnership will strengthen climate ambition and deepen our collaboration on the policies and sustainable technologies needed to accelerate the global net-zero future. Both countries are committed to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and taking decisive action this decade to keep a 1.5-degree Celsius temperature limit within reach. We share the goals of leading the world to develop the innovative tools urgently needed to accelerate global climate action and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in their economies by 2050 at the latest. The United States and Germany will invest in a sustainable economy that drives inclusive growth, supports communities, and creates good jobs and a healthy environment on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.

The Climate and Energy Partnership will be co-chaired from the U.S. side by the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and the Secretary of Energy, and from the German side by the Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, with participation from the U.S. Department of State, Germany’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other agencies or ministries as appropriate.

The United States and Germany intend the Partnership to include three key areas of cooperation:

Climate Action: The United States and Germany will push to raise global climate ambition and work bilaterally and multilaterally to accelerate reaching a net-zero future. We will develop actionable roadmaps and policies for near-term and long-term reduction of emissions to keep a 1.5-degree Celsius limit in sight; coordinate on climate and trade agendas; mobilize finance for sustainable development; advance sectoral decarbonization and address short-lived climate pollutants; and coordinate on common interests in multilateral fora including the Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the climate tracks in the G20, and G7.

Transformational Energy Technologies: The United States and Germany will collaborate on developing and deploying critical energy technologies. We will advance renewable energy technologies and grid integration of variable renewable energy including through energy storage; collaborate on sustainable hydrogen technologies; cooperate on efficiency measures across the building and industrial sectors; increase the adoption of electric vehicles; promote technology commercialization from research institutions to industry; advance reliable and resilient energy systems and supply chains; cooperate on advanced sustainable energy systems while promoting inclusivity, supporting communities, and strengthening the workforce; and coordinate in multilateral energy fora including the energy tracks in the G20 and G7, Mission Innovation, Clean Energy Ministerial, International Energy Agency, and IRENA.

Energy Transitions in Emerging Economies: The United States and Germany will collaborate to accelerate sustainable energy in emerging economies critical to tackling the climate crisis and preventing the use of energy as a coercive tool. We will mobilize investment in Central and Eastern Europe, including by supporting Ukraine’s energy transformation, energy efficiency, and energy security; mobilize investment in sustainable energy in major and growing emitters around the world such as those in South and Southeast Asia; develop energy policy and regulations for increased adoption of renewables and sustainable fuel alternatives like sustainable hydrogen; and pursue technology and technical assistance collaboration with major emerging economies to speed decisive action to curb emissions this decade and enable swift net-zero transitions.

The government of Greenland has decided to suspend all oil exploration off the world's largest island, calling it "a natural step" because the Arctic government "takes the climate crisis seriously."

No oil has been found yet around Greenland, but officials there had seen potentially vast reserves as a way to help Greenlanders realize their long-held dream of independence from Denmark by cutting the subsidy of the equivalent of about $680 million Canadian the Danish territory receives from the Danish government every year.

Global warming means that retreating ice could uncover potential oil and mineral resources which, if successfully tapped, could dramatically change the fortunes of the semi-autonomous territory of 57,000 people.

"The future does not lie in oil. The future belongs to renewable energy, and in that respect we have much more to gain," the Greenland government said in a statement. The government said it "wants to take co-responsibility for combating the global climate crisis."

The decision was made June 24 but made public Thursday.

U.K. issues first ever extreme heat warning

The United Kingdom's Met Office issued its first ever "Extreme Heat Warning" on Monday, after all four U.K. nations recorded their hottest day so far this year over the weekend.

Driving the news: "The impacts from extreme heat are increasing across the U.K. due to climate change," per a June Met Office statement announcing its new amber and red warning system to inform the public of potential widespread disruption and adverse health effects.

    • The U.K. amber warning follows extreme high temperatures earlier this month in Nordic countries. In particular, Finland is just emerging from a historic heat wave that saw temperatures hit all-time highs.

By the numbers: Northern Ireland saw an all-time temperature high of 88.1 degrees Fahrenheit, recorded in Ballywatticock, County Down on Saturday.

    • London's Heathrow airport recorded the U.K.'s hottest temperature so far this year on Sunday, when it reached 88.9°F, the BBC notes. Cardiff recorded the hottest temperature yet for Wales in 2021, when it hit 86.4°F the same day.
    • On Saturday, Threave, in Dumfries and Galloway all recorded Scotland's hottest temperature of 2021 when they hit 82.8°F.

Of note: "Climate change is causing warming across the U.K. All of the U.K.'s ten warmest years on record have occurred since 2002," per a Met Office statement.

If I didn't know better I'd say repeater is in favour of phasing out fossil fuels for renewables.

    If true, that's real progress.

I guess when the US under the trump administration pulled out of The Paris Agreement for four long years did so under pressure from the "climate change regime " , right?
