The Government of Costa Rica expects the country will generate more than 99% of its energy from renewable resources in 2019.

That means Costa Rica will have run on more than 98% clean energy over five consecutive years, according to data from the National Center for Energy Control (CENCE).

So far in 2019, 98.84% of Costa Rica’s power has come from renewable resources, the government says, “despite the dry conditions that have prevailed in the region.”

In 2019, Costa Rica has generated 67.5% of its energy from hydropower, 17% from wind, 13.5% from geothermal sources and 0.84% ​​from biomass and solar panels. The remaining 1.16% corresponds to backup plants, Casa Presidencial says.

The numbers do not include the fossil-fuel dependent transportation sector, which is responsible for 66% of hydrocarbon consumption and 54% of carbon dioxide emissions in Costa Rica.

Still, the Costa Rican government says its clean energy generation — which powers more than 1.5 million homes and 225,000 businesses — has saved the country nearly $500 million over the past 20 years over relying on fossil fuels.

Costa Rica has also generated more than $180 million in sales of surplus energy to Central America’s Regional Electricity Market (MER), which has helped power Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

Since this is the appropriate placeholder, I have been discussing with Nidhogg his use of Patrick Frank, a big-oil funded climate science denier, to argue that Climate science is wildy wrong.

There are several court cases underway in the US where big oil companies like Chevron are being sued for the damage they have done knowing that their products cause destructive climate change (and they have known for a long time). I'll leave the rights and wrongs of that lawsuit for another day.

However, Patrick Frank was one of the people that posted a "Climate Science Tutorial" for the judge in that case (too late to be included in the case but not to be publicised by his Heartland Institute paymasters, surprise surprise) - Chevron's own attempts were nonsensically so light on substance that the judge asked Chevron's lawyer why, as he gave a chronological account of climate science milestones, he skipped over 1938 - the year George Callendar first linked climate change to CO2 emissions: the Callendar Effect.

The essence of this bollocks published by oil company shills is that there were other periods of global warming in the past, and we don't know what caused them because of a lack of physical evidence.

So their argument is that we should believe that we don't know what is causing this one.

It's kind of like finding a body with a bullet hole to the head and saying "We don't know what killed him because we've found skeletons in the past and we don't know what killed them".

The Earth just had its warmest September on record, tying a mark set in 2016, according to data released Friday by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, a European group that measures the planet's temperatures.

Globally, September 2019 was roughly 1.02 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average from 1981-2010, "making it the warmest September in our data record, although virtually on a par with 2016," the group said in a statement.

"Regions with the most markedly above average temperatures included the central and eastern USA, the Mongolian plateau and parts of the Arctic. Much below average temperatures were only recorded in a few regions, including southwestern Russia and parts of Antarctica," the group said.

The data continues Earth's hot streak, with June being the warmest June ever, and July the warmest month in recorded history, according to AFP. August was the second hottest August since records began. This all contributed to the warmest summer on record for the Northern Hemisphere, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

"The recent series of record-breaking temperatures is an alarming reminder of the long-term warming trend that can be observed on a global level," Copernicus Director Jean-Noel Thepaut said to AFP.

"With continued greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting impact on global temperatures, records will continue to be broken in the future," Thepaut said.

This year's warmth is occurring without the heat from a strong El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, according to the Capital Weather Gang. El Niño is a natural climate pattern that often boosts global temperatures by bringing more ocean heat to the surface and adding it to the atmosphere.

A powerful El Niño occurred in 2015 and 2016, contributing to the record heat at that time, the Capital Weather Gang said.

September climate data from both NASA and NOAA, which also track global temperatures, will be released later this month.

Under plans to lower the voltage of energy grids across the north-west of England, about 45,000 homes can expect to shave £60 from their annual electricity bills. The scheme could save millions of pounds on energy a year and cut carbon emissions without people noticing any difference, says the local network company.

During “Smart Street” trials over four years, engineers for Electricity North West found they could carefully lower the grid’s voltage by enough to save on energy without noticeably slowing household appliances or causing light bulbs to flicker.

“Nobody noticed the changes until they were given their bill and suddenly found out they’d been using less electricity,” said Steve Cox, the company’s engineering director.

“If we reduced the voltage by a few percent, then a full kettle might take eight seconds longer to boil. If we boost the voltage, it might boil eight seconds faster. But within the typical time it takes to boil a kettle, say two minutes, this really isn’t noticeable.”

“Voltage control” is well established in some states in the US, but Electricity North West will be the first network in the UK to reduce its voltage towards the lower end of the normal 220V to 240V range.

The company will install highly sensitive devices that pinpoint the “voltage sweet spot” at which appliances use as little energy as possible.

“It’s a bit like a car on the motorway. Your car could run at anywhere between 10mph to 90mph, but it operates most efficiently at 50mph,” Cox said.

“We monitor how much energy our customers are using in real time, and how much power is flowing through the network, and then we regulate the voltage down to the most efficient level so that appliances keep operating normally but consume less energy,” he said.

The savings could provide a new carbon-cutting frontier for the UK as it moves towards its 2050 target to create a carbon-neutral economy. By being more energy efficient, Electricity North West could cut its emissions by up to 10%, saving 143,860 tonnes of carbon by 2050 – the equivalent of taking 2,570 polluting cars off the road every year.

The lower voltage could also leave more capacity on the energy grid to connect new sources of clean electricity, such as small-scale renewable energy projects, to help meet the rising demand of electric vehicles and heat pumps without adding carbon emissions to the system.

Helen Boyle, decarbonisation manager for the company, said: “Demand for electricity is set to double over the next 20 years, so we’re taking positive steps now to help the transition away from fossil fuels and make the low-carbon economy a reality.”

Cox said the company hopes to expand the trial from thousands of homes to millions in the years ahead. It is already sharing its research with other regional energy networks which may also choose to lower the voltage to save on electricity.

Italy plans mandatory climate change lessons for schools

All children in Italy will have to study climate change at school starting from next year, becoming the first country in the world where this will be compulsory.

Italy's minister for education, Lorenzo Fioramonti, announced the decision on Wednesday.

The decision will apply to all state-run schools in the southern European nation and will come into force from the start of the 2020 school year in September.

The lessons, which will also teach sustainable development, will be given to pupils from first grade through high school, from the ages of six to 19 years.

Speaking earlier to Reuters news agency, Fioramonti said all state schools would dedicate 33 hours per year, almost one hour per school week, to climate change issues.

"I want to make the Italian education system the first education system that puts the environment and society at the core of everything we learn in school," the lawmaker for the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement party said.

According to a report in UK newspaper The Telegraph the syllabus will be based on the United Nations' 17 sustainable development goals, including how to live more sustainably, how to combat the pollution of the oceans and how to address poverty and social injustice.

Traditional subjects such as geography, mathematics and physics, would also be studied from a green perspective.

Fioramonti has been a vocal supporter of green policies in government.

He drew criticism in September this year for encouraging students to miss class and attend the Fridays for Future climate protests.

His proposals for a plastic tax and sugary drink tax were also criticized, but they were presented to parliament for approval as part of the Italian government's 2020 budget this week.

While one of the power companies is looking at shutting down one of Australias' aging coal fired power stations, the government in a moment of lunacy has tried to convince the company to keep it going.
