Don’t get carried away. The Dayton shooter doesn’t appear to be a right-winger. No motive has been determined.

Florida man arrested after making threat to Walmart on Facebook

Man appears to believe in white supremacist ideology

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents arrested a man who they say made threats on social media.

Richard D. Clayton, 26, of Winter Park, was arrested Friday after he posted threats to kill or do bodily harm on Facebook.

According to officials, the investigation began Tuesday after Clayton made a threat on Facebook saying: "3 more days of probation left then I get my AR-15 back. Don't go to Walmart next week."

Investigators told News 6 they were unsure if Clayton was referencing a specific Walmart location.

"Investigators say Clayton appears to believe in the white supremacist ideology and has a history of posting threats on Facebook using fictitious accounts," officials said in a news release.

The arrest came after a joint investigation by the FDLE, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Winter Park Police Department.

Clayton was arrested at his parents' Winter Park home Friday evening. Winter Park police detailed how Clayton was uncooperative and belligerent during the arrest, at one point telling an officer: "Officer, I hope that the next call you go to, you get blown away and killed. God, I pray that happens."

Court paperwork details how Clayton repeatedly asked an officer if he was Hispanic and that "they are what is wrong with this country. They come in and are ruining everything."

At one point, Clayton repeatedly asked an officer if he was a Nazi, then proceeded to expose himself and threatened to urinate in the police car. After an officer told Clayton he was not Hispanic, Clayton replied, "OK, well then, I guess I won't pee in your car, then."

Clayton was booked into the Orange County Jail. The case will be prosecuted by the Office of the State Attorney, 9th Judicial Circuit.

Through court paperwork, News 6 has uncovered why Clayton's guns were no longer in his possession. During St. Patrick's Day weekend in 2018, Clayton was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

Documents detailed how Clayton ended up pleading no contest to the DUI misdemeanor charge, and because of that case, a judge ordered Clayton to not possess any firearms while he was on probation for one year.

During that probation period, paperwork shows Clayton was arrested in Pinellas County last September after deputies said they had to stop the Clearwater Super Boat Race because Clayton was drunk and swam naked in the middle of it.

Clayton made his first court appearance Saturday, where a judge reduced his bail from $25,000 to $15,000 on the condition that he stay 1,000 feet from any Walmart.

Ohio man posted about mass shootings, attacking Planned Parenthood and federal agents, authorities say

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Federal prosecutors on Monday charged a Boardman man with making threats against law enforcement, following an investigation that revealed he voiced his support online of mass shootings and lived in a house with 25 guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition, records show.

Justin Olsen, 18, faces a charge of threatening to assault a federal law enforcement officer. Authorities arrested him on Aug. 7 on state charges and he was taken to the Mahoning County Jail. He has been in custody ever since.

Olsen used the handle “ArmyOfChrist” as his moniker on iFunny, a website where people can posts memes, photos and statements on a variety of topics. There, he told fellow users that he supported mass shootings and attacks on Planned Parenthood, according to an affidavit written by FBI agent Themistocles Tsarnas.

The threats included a June 2 discussion about the Branch Dividians in Waco, Texas, officials say. In 1993, cult leader David Koresh and many of his followers were killed following a standoff and raid by state and federal law enforcement.
Olsen wrote, “in conclusion, shoot every federal agent on sight,” according to the affidavit.

While an investigation into Olsen began in February, a prosecutor in Boardman, 80 miles southeast of Cleveland, said on Aug. 6 he could not wait to act on the information in light of recent mass shootings in the U.S., a Boardman police report said. Authorities arrested Olsen as he walked from his home to his car.

Olsen made his initial appearance Monday in front of a federal magistrate judge in Youngstown. Preliminary and detention hearings are set for Friday.

His attorney Ross Smith did not immediately respond to a message.

Tsarnas’ affidavit says FBI agents in Alaska began investigating “ArmyOfChrist” because of postings that supported violence. By March, the FBI noticed that about 4,400 people subscribed to his account, which showed a large increase over the previous month.

Olsen also posted statements such as “don’t comply with gun laws, stock up on stuff they could ban. In fact, go out of your way to break these laws, they’re f-----g stupid,” the affidavit says. He also wrote “Hell, even the Oklahoma City bombing shows that armed resistance is a viable method of political change. There is no legal solution,” according to the affidavit.

The latter was a reference to Timothy McVeigh, who is responsible for the largest domestic terrorism attack in U.S. history. McVeigh, who was executed in 2011, become something of a cult figure among mass shooters and in dark corners of the internet.

Olsen’s postings appeared “politically motivated,” and he also posted that he was accepted into a ROTC program in Alabama, according to the police report. He also noted that he planned to move to Austin for college after he was accepted to the University of Texas through an ROTC scholarship.

Agents subpoenaed iFunny for the email address associated with “ArmyOfChrist” and traced it back to Olsen, the affidavit says. The case was sent to the FBI’s office in Youngstown in early August.

Olsen admitted to Tsarnas during his arrest that he posted comments about violence on iFunny from his cellphone but said they were “only a joke,” the affidavit says. He said the comments regarding shooting federal agents were “a hyperbolic conclusion based on the results of the Waco siege … where the ATF slaughtered families,” according to the affidavit.

Olsen also said he made the postings on his “s--t account,” the police report states.

When officers went to Olsen’s father’s house on Aug. 7, they saw about 300 rounds of ammunition on the stairway leading to the second floor. They entered the home for a safety sweep, seeing a computer and iPad in Olsen’s room. In another bedroom, they found rifle cases, thousands of rounds of ammunition, camouflage clothing and camouflaged backpacks, along with a large gun vault, the affidavit states.

Inside the vault were AR-15-style rifles and shotguns.

In all, the search of the house resulted in the seizure of 15 rifles, some of which were assault-style, as well as 10 semi-automatic pistols and an estimated 10,000 rounds of ammunition, according to the affidavit. Authorities also found a machete in the trunk of Olsen’s car.

Olsen’s arrest came within the same week Connor Betts opened fire in a popular entertainment district in Dayton, killing nine and injuring dozens of others before police shot and killed him. That shooting, which happened Aug. 4, came less than a day after another man opened fire inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and injuring numerous others.

“Urging people to shoot federal agents is never acceptable,” U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman said in a statement. “This defendant had access to an arsenal and we take his threats very seriously.”

Ohio white nationalist, anti-Semite arrested for threatening to shoot up Jewish community center, police say

An Ohio man has been arrested for making threats toward a local Jewish community center in New Middletown.
James Reardon Jr., 20, has been charged with telecommunications harassment and aggravated menacing and is being held in the Mahoning County Jail on $250,000 bond with a court hearing planned for Monday morning.

On Friday, the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force raided Reardon’s house and seized a cache of weapons and ammunition, including dozens of round of ammo, multiple semi-automatic weapons, a gas mask and bulletproof armor.

"Grateful for the work of the FBI, local law enforcement and our community partners in the Youngstown Jewish community. We will continue to employ all our resources to stop the spread of white nationalism and violent extremism," the Anti-Defamation League in Cleveland tweeted.

Portland ‘ground zero’ for protests between right, left-wing

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Hundreds of far-right protesters and anti-fascist counter-demonstrators swarmed downtown Portland, Oregon, on Saturday for a long-hyped rally that attracted President Donald Trump’s attention and resulted in at least 13 arrests.

Police seized metal poles, bear spray and other weapons and closed bridges and streets to try to keep the rival groups apart. They were largely successful. Six minor injuries were reported.

“This was a dynamic event with demonstrators frequently moving from one part of the city to another,” Mayor Ted Wheeler said at an evening news conference.

Leaders of the right-wing groups vowed to return to Portland, saying they would keep coming back to the liberal West Coast city so long as the left-wing antifascists, known as antifa, groups remained active.

President Donald Trump weighed in early Saturday, writing on Twitter that “Portland is being watched very closely... Hopefully the Mayor will be able to properly do his job.”

He also wrote that “major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an ‘ORGANIZATION of TERROR.’” It wasn’t immediately clear what he meant by that because there’s no mechanism for the United States government to declare a domestic organization a terror group.

Joe Biggs, the organizer of the right-wing gathering, said it was a success.

“Go look at President Trump’s Twitter,” he told The Oregonian/OregonLive. “He talked about Portland, said he’s watching antifa. That’s all we wanted,”

At the evening news conference Portland’s mayor said Biggs was not welcome. “We do not want him here in my city. Period,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler tied the demonstrations to “a rising white nationalist movement” and a growing sense of fear in the country.

“We’re certainly seeing that play out,” he said. “Portland being a very progressive community is always going to be at or near ground zero of this battle.”

The events began late Saturday morning. Flag-waving members of the Proud Boys, Three Percenters militia group and others gathered downtown, some wearing body armor and helmets like the antifa protesters. Police said they had seized the weapons, including shields, from multiple groups as they assembled along the Willamette River, which runs through the city.

More than two dozen local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, were in the city for the right-wing rally. Portland Police said all of the city’s 1,000 officers would be on duty for the gathering that was hyped on social media and elsewhere for weeks.

Alleged Thwarted Mass Shooter Left Trail Of Racist And Anti-Transgender Posts

A Connecticut man who had amassed an arsenal of tactical weapons and body armor, and who police say may have been preparing for a mass shooting, left a trail of virulently racist and anti-trans postings online.

TPM found that social media accounts registered to Norwalk, Connecticut resident Brandon Wagshol both reflected elements of the police accusations against him and contained rants against minorities.

Wagshol was arrested, officials said, after a joint FBI-local police investigation on a tip that the 22-year old was trying to import “large capacity rifle magazines from out of state.” During the investigation, Wagshol wrote a Facebook post “that showed his interest in committing a mass shooting,” leading to a raid on his house and his arrest, the FBI and local police said in a joint statement.

Police say that they uncovered a weapons cache during the raid, including titanium body armor and a combat helmet.

Guns seized from Washington man said to be neo-Nazi leader prepping for 'race war'

Kaleb James Cole was not charged with any crime, but the guns were taken under the state's "red flag" law.

Firearms belonging to the suspected leader of a neo-Nazi group who was thought to be preparing for a "race war" have been seized under a "red flag" law in Washington state, according to court documents.

Authorities removed five rifles, three pistols and other gun components from Kaleb James Cole, 24, under a state law that allows authorities to take guns from people deemed to be a risk to themselves or others for up to a year, authorities said. Cole has not been charged with any crime.

Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes believes the seizure, which court documents indicate happened Sept. 26, may have prevented a massacre.

"This is a hate-filled human being, but unfortunately one who possesses really alarming numbers of weapons," Holmes said.

Man with alleged 'Boogaloo' ties charged with sending threats to California health official

A California man who authorities said has ties to the extremist anti-government Boogaloo movement has been charged in connection with two dozen harassing or threatening letters sent to Santa Clara County's top public health official, according to a police report and court records.

Alan Joseph Viarengo, 55, of Gilroy, has not yet entered a plea but is facing two felony charges including stalking and threatening a public official in connection with 24 letters that were sent to Dr. Sara Cody between April 9 and July 29, according to court documents.

Authorities allege Viarengo engaged in a sustained effort to intimidate Cody with letters containing misogynistic language, threats, pornography and anti-government views. In June, a letter addressed to Cody showed up with a picture of an igloo in the place of a return address and the phrase “Let’s Boogie” written above.

Florida ‘Antifa Hunter’ Gets 3 Years For Online Racist Threats

Daniel McMahon waged an online campaign to terrorize and harass those who opposed his white supremacist ideology.

A Florida man who called himself “the Antifa hunter” as he waged an online campaign to terrorize and harass those who opposed his white supremacist ideology was sentenced on Monday to more than three years in prison.

Daniel McMahon, 32, of Brandon, Florida, pleaded guilty in April to using social media to threaten a Black activist to deter the man from running for office in Charlottesville, Virginia. McMahon also admitted that he threatened to sexually assault the young autistic daughter of a North Carolina woman who protested against white nationalists.

A federal judge in Virginia sentenced McMahon to three years and five months in prison. McMahon declined an opportunity to make a public statement beforehand, but he heard from his victims during the hearing, which was conducted remotely by video conference.

In a written statement read aloud by a court employee, the North Carolina woman said McMahon methodically “cultivated a culture of fear and chaos” in her community of anti-racist activists.

“There is seemingly nothing that Daniel McMahon will not do in the name of white supremacy,” she wrote.

‘Boogaloo’ Suspect Steven Carrillo Pleads Not Guilty To Fatal Ambush Of Sheriff Sergeant In Santa Cruz Mountains

DUBLIN (CBS SF/AP) — Air Force Sgt. Steven Carrillo has pleaded not guilty to murder charges stemming from the killing of a Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputy, who along with his partner, were ambushed by gunfire and explosives as they walked up the driveway of a Ben Lomond home in early June.

Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller was killed in the attack and his partner, deputy sheriff Alex Spencer, suffered serious injuries. Other law enforcement officials were also injured.

Carrillo was captured by a local resident wrestled him to the ground and disarmed him of an AR-15, pipe bomb and pistol in a life-or-death confrontation.

In Oakland, Carrillo along with an alleged accomplice, Robert Justus, have also been indicted by a federal grand jury for the first-degree murder of 53-year-old Federal Protection officer David Patrick Underwood and wounding a second officer in a shooting at Oakland’s Federal Courthouse during a night of unrest associated with a May 29th protest over the in-custody death of George Floyd.

Federal prosecutors have linked Carrillo with the extremist, anti-government group called the Boogaloo movement.

The group started in alt-right culture on the internet with the belief that there is an impending civil war, according to experts. The movement’s followers, some of whom call themselves “Boogaloo Bois,” are generally younger and more likely to turn to acts of violence than members of other militia-type groups.

Authorities accused Carrillo of fatally shooting Underwood from a white van after developing a plot with Justus. The pair allegedly drove to Oakland and took advantage of the distraction afforded by protesters marching through the city’s downtown in a demonstration against police brutality. Justus is accused of driving the van.

Vice President Mike Pence referenced Underwood’s killing in his Wednesday evening speech at the Republican National Convention. Pence said Underwood was “shot and killed during the riots in Oakland, California.”

DHS draft document: White supremacists are greatest terror threat

White supremacists present the gravest terror threat to the United States, according to a draft report from the Department of Homeland Security.

Two later draft versions of the same document — all of which were reviewed by POLITICO — describe the threat from white supremacists in slightly different language. But all three drafts describe the threat from white supremacists as the deadliest domestic terror threat facing the U.S., listed above the immediate danger from foreign terrorist groups.

“Foreign terrorist organizations will continue to call for Homeland attacks but probably will remain constrained in their ability to direct such plots over the next year,” all three documents say.

Russia “probably will be the primary covert foreign influence actor and purveyor of disinformation and misinformation in the Homeland,” the documents also say.

Former acting DHS Sec. Kevin McAleenan last year directed the department to start producing annual homeland threat assessments. POLITICO reviewed three drafts of this year’s report — titled DHS’s State of the Homeland Threat Assessment 2020 — all of which were produced in August. Ben Wittes, the editor in chief of the national security site Lawfare, obtained the documents and shared them with POLITICO. The first such assessment has not been released publicly, and a DHS spokesperson declined to comment on “allegedly leaked documents,” and on when the document will be made public.

None of the drafts POLITICO reviewed referred to a threat from Antifa, the loose cohort of militant left-leaning agitators who senior Trump administration officials have described as domestic terrorists. Two of the drafts refer to extremists trying to exploit the “social grievances” driving lawful protests.

Two ‘Boogaloo Bois’ Charged With Conspiring to Provide Support to Hamas

Two self-described “Boogaloo Bois” were charged on Friday for allegedly conspiring and attempting to aid Hamas, the extremist Islamist group, as part of “their desire to overthrow the government” after protests erupted in Minneapolis over the police-killing of George Floyd.

Michael Robert Solomon, 30, and Benjamin Ryan Teeter, 22, were charged with conspiring and attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, the Department of Justice said in a Friday press release. Both men, who proclaim to be part of the extremist anti-government Boogaloo movement, were taken into custody on Thursday evening and have been remanded in Minneapolis pending a formal hearing next week.

The Boogaloo scene generally trends right-wing or fringe libertarian, with many of its memes and aesthetic markers borrowed from more explicitly racist alt-right and 4chan culture. The movement is broadly anti-government and talks often of sparking a civil war.

“This case can only be understood as a disturbing example of the old adage, ‘The enemy of your enemy is your friend,’” Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers for the National Security Division said in a press release announcing the charges. “No matter what witch’s brew of ideological motivations inspire those who seek to engage in terrorist activity and harm our country and our fellow citizens, the National Security Division is committed to identifying and holding them accountable.”

According to the criminal complaint, the pair, who allegedly belong to a Boogaloo Boys sub-group called “Boojahideen,” sought to supply weaponry to Hamas and use violence against cops, government officials and government property “to overthrow the U.S. government.”

White supremacist gang member killed after ambushing deputies in Templeton

A white supremacist gang member was killed in a gun battle with law enforcement after he ambushed and shot a deputy pursuing him Thursday near the Templeton Cemetery, Sheriff Ian Parkinson said at a news conference.

According to Parkinson, a sheriff’s deputy was driving in the Theatre Drive area around 10:20 a.m. when the deputy recognized the car of a wanted felon parked on the side of the road. The deputy made a U-turn and pulled up next to the vehicle, which was unoccupied.

The deputy then proceeded north and found the man walking on Cemetery Road off Theatre Drive near the Templeton Cemetery, Parkinson said. He said the deputy tried to make a pedestrian traffic stop, but the man took off running toward the cemetery.

The suspect hid behind a bush and when two deputies approached the area, he “ambushed the deputy,” Parkinson said.

“The suspect shot multiple rounds at the deputy, striking one deputy in the lower leg. And the deputies returned fire,” Parkinson said.
