Plot to kidnap Michigan governor thwarted, militia members arrested

    More details...

Thirteen people, including seven men associated with the Wolverine Watchmen militia group, have been arrested in a sweeping takedown of plots to kidnap the Michigan governor, attack the state capitol building and incite violence.

The group aimed to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat who has traded barbs with Republican President Donald Trump over her response to the coronavirus pandemic, ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election, according to a criminal complaint.

At one point, the alleged plotters discussed recruiting a force of 200 to storm the state capitol in Lansing and take hostages, but later abandoned the plan in favor of surveiling and kidnapping Whitmer at her vacation home, the complaint said.

At a news conference, Whitmer accused Trump of encouraging extremist groups like the “sick and depraved men” that targeted her, citing his failure to condemn white supremacists at the recent U.S. presidential debate against Joe Biden as an example.

“When our leaders meet with, encourage and fraternize with domestic terrorists they legitimize their actions, and they are complicit,” Whitmer said.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany pushed back at her remarks, saying Trump has condemned all forms of hate.

“Governor Whitmer is sowing division by making these outlandish allegations,” McEnany said in a statement.

Internal U.S. security memos in recent months have warned that violent domestic extremists could pose a threat to election-related targets, a concern exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, political tensions, civil unrest and foreign disinformation campaigns.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said during congressional hearings in September that his agency was conducting investigations into violent domestic extremists, including white supremacists and anti-fascist groups. Wray said the largest “chunk” of investigations were into white supremacist groups.

The FBI became aware through social media in early 2020 that a group of people were discussing the “violent overthrow” of multiple state governments and used confidential sources to track their movements, according to the complaint.

The group of six facing federal charges -- Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta -- could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted on charges of attempting to kidnap Whitmer.

“Fox and Croft in particular... discussed detonating explosive devices to divert police from the area of the home and Fox even inspected the underside of a Michigan highway bridge for places to seat an explosive,” Andrew Birge, U.S. attorney for the western district of Michigan, told a briefing.

    ACTION TIMED BEFORE ELECTION

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel disclosed additional state charges against seven men affiliated with the Wolverine Watchmen for allegedly violating the state’s anti-terrorism act by conspiring to kidnap the governor and propagate violence.

The Wolverine Watchmen has used Facebook FB.O since November 2019 to recruit members, according to affidavits in support of the state charges. The group, which is anti-law enforcement, trained with firearms to prepare for an uprising against the government and what they believe is an "impending politically motivated civil war," according to the affidavits.

Nessel said the suspects sought to identify the home addresses of law enforcement officers with the aim of threatening them with violence and inciting unrest. She said a total of 19 state felony charges were filed against the seven individuals, including counts for gang membership and for providing support for terrorist acts.

According to the FBI’s criminal complaint, Fox indicated that he wanted to kidnap Whitmer before the national election on Nov. 3. In one June phone call, Fox said he would try Whitmer for “treason” after taking her hostage, the complaint said.

Michigan is a key swing state in the 2020 presidential race, and Trump and his supporters demanded the governor relax social-distancing rules. Militia members were among those that took to the streets in April to protest the various rules.

Trump encouraged the demonstrators, tweeting in April, “LIBERATE MICHIGAN.”

On one June video livestreamed to a private Facebook group, Fox called Whitmer a “tyrant bitch” as he complained about restrictions against gym openings.

“I don’t know, boys, we gotta do something. You guys link with me on our other location system, give me some ideas of what we can do,” Fox said on the video, according to the complaint.
Facebook said that it cooperated with the investigation.
The militia movement in the United States became prominent in the mid-1990s and surged again a little more than a decade ago with the arrival of social media and election of former President Barack Obama, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Mark Pitcavage, a senior research fellow with the organization, said militia movements generally support Trump and therefore have shifted their “anti-government anger” away from the federal government, where it has been traditionally aimed, and toward state leaders.

“In that sense, it’s not necessarily surprising that a militia cell might decide to target a high-profile Democratic governor,” he said.

It might be true, he's probably very busy trying to put together a fake investigation into Biden to roll out in the last week of October.

Richard Holzer Pleads Guilty To Plotting To Blow Up Pueblo’s Temple Emanuel

CBS4) – A Colorado man has pleaded guilty in a plot to firebomb a Jewish synagogue in Pueblo. Richard Holzer made the plea in federal court on Thursday morning.

Temple Emanuel was the intended target, but federal agents infiltrated Holzer’s operation in 2019 and disrupted the plans. They said Holzer, a known white supremacist, wanted to drive the Jewish people out of Pueblo. Unsealed federal court documents revealed the FBI became aware that he made racist, anti-Semitic and threatening statements on social media prior to launching his plot.

Under terms of the plea agreement, Holzer cannot receive more than 20 years in prison n when sentencing is scheduled to take place on Jan. 20, 2021.

White supremacist gang members charged in federal drugs and weapons case

Federal authorities in Utah announced a crackdown Friday on 21 white supremacist gang members and associates in the Salt Lake City area who allegedly distributed drugs or illegally possessed guns.

The charges in 15 indictments unsealed Friday target Soldiers of Aryan Culture, Silent Aryan Warriors, and Noble Elect Thugs, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah said in a statement.

The U.S. Department of Justice's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force launched an investigation last year, concluding members of the gangs trafficked methamphetamine and firearms, according to the statement.

Investigators said they purchased 1.65 pounds of meth and recovered 15 guns during the operation.

"Many of the defendants have been involved in criminal conduct in Utah communities for many years," the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Lawyers for the suspects could not be located for comment, and the Federal Public Defender's office in Utah did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said 11 of the suspects were arrested Wednesday and the remainder were already in custody this week. "Several are in state custody on other state criminal charges," it said.

Eleven suspects were charged with distributing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted.

Nine defendants were charged with being a felon in possession of a gun, with some facing the additional allegation of having ammunition. The former charge carries a maximum of 10 years in prison on conviction.

Last month FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress “racially motivated violent extremism,” primarily from white supremacist groups, is the most lethal threat facing the nation.

It wasn't fake it actually happened.

And maybe you should read the findings of the bipartisan Senate report too.

    It's a cult.

Trump has told any number of lies, wished an accused child molester well, threatens to arrest his political opponents and any number of other anti-democratic things, denies, lies, and then actively helps spread a deadly virus and people like Repeater would not only make ezxcuses for that level of dishonesty and incompetence but actually still vote for him.

Not only that but they are completely intractable about it. Trump could definitely shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and have his supporters still back him 100%.

We are seeing a real-time lesson in how fascism and cults take hold and it's a wannabe fascist Cult of Stupid headed by a unerringly stupid man.

Threatening emails telling voters to vote for Trump target Brevard County residents

Voters across Brevard County Tuesday afternoon received threatening emails purporting to come from the Proud Boys, a far-right group that espouses militant authoritarian ideology, telling them to vote for President Trump, or else.

The emails appear to follow a similar format, and come from the email address "info@officialproudboys.com."

"Hi (name) We are in possession of all your information You are currently registered as a Democrat and we know this because we have gained access into the entire voting infrastructure. You will vote for Trump on Election Day or we will come after you. Change your party affiliation to Republican to let us know you received our message and will comply. We will know which candidate you voted for. I would take this seriously if I were you. (Voter's address)," it read.

Donald Schwinn, 85, a snowbird registered to vote in Melbourne Beach, received one, telling FLORIDA TODAY "they're trying to scare people into voting for Trump."

"I don’t believe they have the resources to do this sort of thing," he continued, adding: "It makes me ashamed to be an American to think that such a group would do such a thing: threaten voters."

Voter intimidation is a federal offense subject to up to one year imprisonment.

Voter email addresses and physical addresses are generally public records available upon request.

The domain for the sender's email "officialproudboys.com" was inactive by Tuesday afternoon although the site does appear to have been previously affiliated with the Proud Boys group. According to WUFT, internet records show that control over the internet address, created in March 2017, was changed Monday night.

Local officials are scrambling to get on top of the situation as reports came in Tuesday afternoon. Emails shared with FLORIDA TODAY show they went out between 3pm and 4pm.

Kimberly Boelzner, spokesperson for Brevard Supervisor of Elections Lori Scott, said their office has received several reports of such emails and are awaiting guidance from the state division of elections.

"We're advising voters to report it to local law enforcement," she said.

Schwinn said when he called the Brevard County Sheriff's Office they directed him to call the state's division of elections. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Boelzner said by 6 p.m. her office had received about a dozen emails and a dozen calls about the matter. Scott has been in touch with the FBI and other authorities.

"We are responding to voters and letting them know we appreciate them contacting us regarding the voter intimidation email they received. (Lori Scott) has contacted local, state, and federal partners for investigation into this very serious matter," she wrote in a follow up email.

Emails to the local Proud Boys chapter were not immediately answered.

Stacey Patel, chair of the Brevard Democrats, said she received at least 5 such emails from voters Tuesday afternoon and had notified the elections supervisor's office.

"We've not seen this kind of voter intimidation in the past and it's obviously really troubling," she said. In a follow up text she said she advises recipients of the email to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI and the Florida Democratic Party Voter Protection team at 1-833-VOTE-FLA.

So far emails only appear to target registered Democrats.

Shelby Joslin-Boote, 36, who lives in Melbourne with her husband and three children said she and her husband received such emails, and said they at first were "upset" and "amazed they're really intimidating voters" but figured that their voter information was retrieved from public record.

"They really need to learn how to spell," she added, noting the subject line of the email reads: "voteing." She said she reported the email to the FBI.

A CBS affiliate in Gainesville reported Tuesday that in Alachua County the Supervisor of Elections is working with law enforcement "after several threatening emails were discovered in the county" which the Alachua sheriff's office said were purported to be from the Proud Boys.

Alachua Supervisor of Elections Kim Barton released the following statement to the CBS affiliate: "We are in contact with and working in conjunction with our law enforcement partners at the local, state and federal level, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security. The Florida Department of State's Division of Elections has been notified as well.

If any individual engages in any form of voter intimidation, our office will refer the case to state and federal law enforcement."

Calls to local FBI offices and an inquiry to the FBI's national press office went unanswered Tuesday evening.: Brevard voters threatened in emails purportedly from 'Proud Boys'

Secret Service charges man with threat to kidnap and kill Biden and Harris

The Secret Service filed charges against a Maryland man after he threatened to kidnap and kill Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

A criminal complaint filed by the agency Wednesday said a man identified as James Dale Reed on Oct. 4 approached a house in his hometown of Frederick that had Biden-Harris lawn signs posted and left a handwritten note detailing graphic threats against the candidates and their supporters.

The man was identified after the resident’s video doorbell captured Reed allegedly leaving the note at the home’s doorstep, according to the complaint.

Reed allegedly threatens in the letter to “severely beat” Biden to “the point of death” and shoot Harris in the head with a Glock 17 pistol. The letter also includes a graphic threat of sexual assault against Harris.

The letter says Biden-Harris supporters would also be “targeted.”

“We have a list of homes and addresses by your election signs,” the letter reads, without clarifying who constitutes “we.” “We are the ones with these scary guns, we are the ones your children have nightmares about.”

The Secret Service’s criminal complaint did not detail any steps Reed or anyone else took to fulfill the alleged threat.

The agency said it focused on Reed following an anonymous tip. He first denied writing the threatening letter when he was first interviewed on Oct. 13, but later admitted to authoring it after providing elimination palm prints and a handwriting sample on Oct. 15.

He later told authorities “this will happen,” referring to threatening comments, citing the tense political climate.

Reed is charged with the federal offense of threatening a major candidate, which can be punished by up to five years in prison. He’s also facing state charges of threatening mass violence and voter intimidation.

The Maryland resident had come to the Secret Service’s attention in 2014 after making a threat then against a person under its protection.

The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.: Secret Service charges man with threat to kidnap and kill Biden and Harris | TheHill

Feds say far-right group coordinated attack on Minneapolis police precinct during protest

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota on Friday announced that the FBI brought charges against a member of the far-right “Boogaloo Bois” group for organizing and participating in an effort to “incite a riot” outside a Minneapolis police precinct in May amid protests against the police killing of George Floyd.

According to the legal complaint filed Monday, Ivan Harrison Hunter, a 26-year-old from Boerne, Texas, who claims to be a member of the Boogaloo Bois, communicated with fellow members in late May ahead of a planned trip to Minneapolis as police had already started clashing with protesters in the city.

The documents claim that federal agents obtained a video from the evening of May 28 showing an individual walking up to the door of the Third Precinct in Minneapolis and firing 13 rounds from “what appears to be an AK-47 style semiautomatic rifle.”
