You do raise an interesting point though, and one I have speculated about for a while.
Politically, the USA seems to have become unmanageable. The US is just a union of states like the EU, so maybe it should take a leaf from their book and loosen the alliance somewhat. The Right might call this 'States rights', I would call it a partial demerger.
Individual states, or grouping of states, can then justify their governance and performance to their own constituents. If you want to live in a place with bare or no minimum wages, a slashed education system, and no health care system, fine- you will benefit from lower taxes too- but needless to say, your 'entitlements' when you are sick, retired or made redundant are not the responsibility of any other state or the feds.
I certainly don't see all that much in common between the red and blue states, or the heartland and coastal states, these days- beyond that increasingly insipid national flag hanging over everything.
