Tourism fee to hit all foreigners

The planned 300-baht tourism fee is expected to apply to all foreigners without exception, serving as insurance coverage of up to 500,000 baht per person in case of accidents.

But the fee has been repeatedly postponed since it was proposed in January this year, with an uncertain timeline for its launch.

Mongkon Wimonrat, assistant permanent secretary at the Tourism and Sports Ministry, said the collection method and system for those arriving by air is now ready to launch. However, he said the ministry needs to conduct further studies on land and sea entry, meaning the programme will start when all ports of entry are equipped with feasible collection methods.

The tourism fee was initially planned for collection from international arrivals, with the exception of diplomats and expatriates in Thailand.

However, Mr Mongkon said exemptions for certain groups cannot be implemented as airline ticketing systems have to embed the fee, and airfares only recognise passenger information listed in passports.

As a result, the fee collection will apply to all entrants who are not Thai citizens, regardless of nationality or visa type, he said.

"The 300-baht fee will guarantee insurance coverage during foreigners' stay in Thailand for up to 30 days," said Mr Mongkon.

For travellers encountering an accident, riot, terrorism attack, natural disaster or other incidents, coverage is restricted to a maximum of 500,000 baht, while coverage for any damage caused by emotional distress cannot exceed 20,000 baht, said the ministry.

In the event of death, the insurance pays out 1 million baht per person, while coverage for crematory expenses is up to 150,000 baht per person. Covid-19 and other types of illness are excluded from this coverage, said the ministry.

"The government has to reconsider the timeline to start this programme," said Mr Mongkon. "Some countries have not fully reopened, so we might have to wait for a more appropriate time to launch."

The entry fee for day-pass entrants will be reduced from 300 baht to facilitate cross-border trade and business, he said.

The Airlines Association of Thailand last month raised concerns about the scheme as the fees applied to foreigners might be regarded as discriminatory.

In June the ministry removed the programme from the agenda of a cabinet meeting, saying the fee collection method for land entry had not yet been decided.

If the programme is approved by the cabinet, fee collection should start within 90 days after publication in the Royal Gazette.

Yeah. Will help weed out the skint. The skint can carry on to Vietnam or something. The problem is , once a govt gets used to this, they will forever be jacking it up and screwing around with it

^^^ I do have a problem with it. Its a thinly veiled attempt to extort more money from "Foreigners" under the guise that it will help the infinitesimally small number who take the stupid risk of entering without personal insurance be that travel or otherwise. The Govt went to great pains to ensure visitors had the required COVID cover through Thai Pass but cannot now seem to ensure/enforce visitors have the necessary insurance cover as an entry requirement.

The money will just disappear into corrupt officials pockets or schemes jointly drawn up with shady financial institutions and any foreigner that relies on the "Scheme" will find themselves in some shithole Govt 3rd class medical facility.

It's not 'thinly disguised' anything. It's there, in the open. It's another type of arrival/departure tax - only people like you would whine about $8 and go on about corruption and how your hard-earned $8 will make someone rich.

Why quote "Foreigners"? Again, it's not hidden as to who it is directed at.

Stay in the UK and holiday in Milton Keynes.

Your eagerness to follow me around the forum picking at posts is being let down yet again by your English comprehension, God only knows what you "Teach" in your "Soft Skills" or "Business Language Classes" in Asia but it ain't English.

Its not the amount its way its pitched.

The vast majority enter Thailand with insurance that covers them should they befall an accident, this "Arrival Tax" as you put it is merely therefore supposed to cover the 0,0001% that take the risk and enter uninsured and find they need treatment but cannot pay for it. Every "Foreigner" and its is Foreigners as stated in the press release therefore has to pay up for these idiots who's losses to either the Govt or Private Hospitals is miniscule compared the the income they are going to derive from this latest money making scheme.- They should call it what it is "Another Tourist Tax" except this one is aimed solely at Foreigners.

Now piss off and find a post of Armstrong's to crawl all over.

just imagine the paperwork, procedure and other myriad hoops one would have to jump through should they ever need to make a claim from the grasping authorities promoting this silly and unnecessary scheme.

if thai guest houses, taxis and businesses etc. were adequately insured against third party claims as they are in civilised countries, then tourists would be covered, once again it is the thai penchant for absolving themselves of any responsibility whatsover that is driving this.

the mention of claiming for emotional distress is interesting, how will one be able to prove emotional distress?

yes, its only a paltry amount, but as the claims come rolling in it will soon increase.

It's fuck all compared to other countries. Who doesn't add these costs to their trips?

Cambodia, you pay for the visa, you pay to go to Angkor Wat. What's the difference?

Exactly. I do not understand why these Thai expats get all spun up around the axle for a couple of bucks. If that is a deal breaker then obviously they didn't plan well. How often do most leave and return anyway that it is a financial impact.... 3 times a year that is only about what, $24 bucks? One can drop that much buying a few knocks at layover airports on the way back.

its not about the baht, its about the rip off you idiot.

99% of tourists will already have insurance cover for accidents, so why are they being forced by the thai into buying the same thing twice. why should they pay to cover the costs of the stupid who travel with no insurance, and being stupid, are more likely to have accidents anyway.

They provided a service and it is always appreciated.
do you tip airline cabin crew, bus drivers, the guards outside the shopping malls?

At the end of the day Cyrille, why bother with it. People can bitch all they want and it isn't going to change a thing. I have principles but I also use a level of common sense about what I am going to take a stand on. This is simply noise. I don't get why people get wound up about shit that goes on here. The shit and corruption that goes on in our home countries far out weighs the petty shit here. But hey, what ever gets one through the day I suppose.

so do you tip cabin crew/bus drivers etc. if they give good service or not? or do you just tip restaurant staff, thereby encouraging the low wages paid to them by the owners. if customers stopped tipping them, which in the usa i understand is around 20 / 25% of the bill, then the owners would have to pay them fairly.
