if you haven't lived there apart from a few years then maybe you don't really know what is going on, you should leave these discussions for people who actually know what they are talking about.Originally Posted by Texpat

i think i'll start threads i issues more often.
it's far more entertaining than i realised to watch the stars and stripes brigade trying to justify their unsubstatiated lies.
Tell us about flags! I want to know more about this patriotic thing you guys keep talking about...................![]()
what does patriotism mean to you Tex?
is it blind loyalty to Government, the army the flag??
“Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it.”
G.B Shaw
Have you actually read the thread this time? Or is this another comment based purely on what you think has been said in the thread?
Why can't you guys seperate criticisms of what your Govt. is doing from an attack on all Americans? Why is it "anti-American" to point out that they're trampling over the rights of others? The so-called and self-professed 'Leaders of the Free World' are held to a higher standard, as they should be. Dismissing valid criticism out-of-hand as "anti-Amercian" is so much hollow rethoric.
Glad you asked. What does patriotism mean to you tex?
I have no idea what patriotism means. I suspect it has something to do with being proud of your country. I see nothing wrong with that an laugh my ass off at the TD twats who think it's fashionable or noble or the sign of an independent thinker to summarily dismiss their entire government as idiots. I don't know maybe yours is. Mine isn't. And they won't be in January, regardless of who is elected. Does that make me patriotic?
As for this blind loyalty to the government you keep pissing about -- at any given time in the past, oh, 50 years, about half of the US population has despised the current government. Which is why I'm amused to listen to you idiots moan on about American patriotism. I suspect you'd prefer the self-loathing, fuck-that-place attitude so prevalent among your countrymen. I doubt you'll find that too often, though you guys are the American experts. I could be wrong.
Let's do a little experiment on patriotism. You count all the American flags posted in Teak Door. And I'll count all the UK flags. OK? I suspect I could limit my count to the taffy flag wavers.
What is this nonsense about the Army? Really? How does that figure into anything?

So the irony is that Tex never stayed longer than a few weeks a year in his own country, and yet claim to know more about the US than anyone else, and others have lived there but "can't" understand what American values are ? is that right Tex ?
just because you were born there, give you absolute knowledge about everything America stands for ? I think you are just having sweet childhood memories, which is a different thing.
I agree with butterfly.
maybe Tex watches too many hollywood blockbusters and reruns of mash
Yeah, working on the USS Okinawa, you really don't run into many Americans only 20,000 or so.
A perfect example of you experts jumping to conclusions. Trying to compare sirloin and a Sloppy Joe.
yeah a bunch of soldiers would give you a balanced view of American life, I'm not anti-American, i am anti-idiot. you are given a chance to educate us Tex in why we are wrong but you choose to call people names and behave like a drama queen.
Do you honestly believe that that the treatment of internees at Guantanamo Bay is something an American can be proud of?
There are very few soldiers on Okinawa. You're facade is cracking. And yes 20K servicemen and another 15-20K wives, children, family members, it's as good a representation as you'll find anywhere........ News Flash, I get it.yeah a bunch of soldiers would give you a balanced view of American life
Not proud, just.Do you honestly believe that that the treatment of internees at Guantanamo Bay is something an American can be proud of?

Spend night on the Okinawa in 90 awaiting transfer in the gulf shortly before the firworks started. Sh*t hole of a ship, I got stuck on a top bunk next to an uninsulated hot water pipe in a space with little to no AC. Woke up thinking I was bathing in my own sweat.
Later in the year, on another ship, we took abroad about 3000 Iraq pows, we did our best to treat them fairly and any thing that resembled abuse or mistreatment was not tolerated at all. I doubt the US military has changed that much since I was in.
In a place as high profile as gitmo, I have little doubt the military is extremely careful in its handling of prisoners.
But if individuals see the world through sh*t colored glasses, like our anti-american friends here seem to do, it is not surprising they see sh*t and are so filled with hatred for good intended individuals who happen to have different political views of the world.

just 1 (jst)
adj.
1. Honorable and fair in one's dealings and actions: a just ruler. See Synonyms at fair1.
2. Consistent with what is morally right; righteous: a just cause.
3. Properly due or merited: just deserts.
4. Law Valid within the law; lawful: just claims.
5. Suitable or proper in nature; fitting: a just touch of solemnity.
6. Based on fact or sound reason; well-founded: a just appraisal.
which of these definitions do you think would suit the situation in Guantanamo Bay?
^^ Referring to the island, not the ship. Ever seen a ship with 40K people on it?
I agree with your post.
^ 'bout all of 'em, I reckon. (does that sound redneck enough for you?)
^ do you think it was JUST for you to quit the service when your country needed you the most ? why not go for another round when given the opportunity if things were so great in the service ?
Whether you choose to admit it or not there are valid criticisms of the US Govt. in general and specifically as they pertain to their actions in the so-called 'War on Terror'.
This repeated refusal to deal with or confront these criticisms and simply shouting them down as "anti-American" is a cop-out and, frankly, only serves to show that you cannot rationally justify nor argue to the contrary any of the points.
It's a distinct pattern amongst many of the American posters on here that they are completely disingenuous when it comes to this type of thing. Valid points are ignored, the people making them attacked, and the posts shifted repeatedly.
Most of the other nations represented here make a national sport of crticising their governments. Going by the example on here Americans simply cannot admit that they're wrong and will go to great lengths in order to avoid doing so. It's intellectual dishonesty at its nadir.
you're a tiresome troll Butterbutt.
^^
Yawn
Get a life. There is a whole world out there that has nothing to do with being angry at the USA, go out and see some of it. You might like some of it.
Come on Anty, it's been challenged a thousand times. Dubya is still in charge and the terrorists are still locked safely away. If the policy of having a prison on Cuba, the oldest overseas US base, was so horribly misguided they would have shut it down years ago. The fact is you're wrong and you can't seem to come to terms with that. You are the minority. You are the dissenting voice. I seem to be the only one listening to you. It's sheer entertainment.
You don't have to thank us. Omar is sleeping soundly in his cage.

Thanks for demonstrating my points for me so superbly; couldn't have found a better example if I'd tried. This repeated refusal to deal with or confront these criticisms and simply shouting them down as "anti-American" is a cop-out and, frankly, only serves to show that you cannot rationally justify nor argue to the contrary any of the points.

What a bizzare rationale; 'Gitmo's still operating so therefore it must be ok'.You can extend that to it's logical conclusion and come up with all sorts of werid and wonderful outcomes. Of course you also seem to have forgotten that they are discussing shutting down Gitmo.
Fact of the matter is that it has been and remains the subject of International condemnation, Tex. Ignoring that neither justifies nor excuses it.
This is where you're consistently wrong. What terrorists? How many of the current Gitmo inmates have been charged and found guilty of terrorism or terrorist related activities? Am I also to believe that they are guilty purely by reason of their being there in the first place? Well to prempt that argument you'll have to reconcile that with the fact that inmates have been released from there after having been held for years and facing no charges.terrorists are still locked safely away
