    Obama fights the Smears

    Clever move-

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has launched a Web site to dispel rumors about his faith and patriotism and his wife's views on race that have dogged his candidacy for more than a year.

The Web site, at Welcome to Obama for America, offers detailed responses to several rumors that have continued to circulate online and in conservative news outlets despite efforts to knock them down, and encourages supporters to e-mail those responses to others.

The Web site says the Illinois senator's wife, Michelle, who like her husband is black, has never used the racially divisive term "whitey," as some blogs and conservative commentators have said.

Michelle has never spoken publicly at either of the two venues where she is alleged to have made the remark, the site says.

The site also tackles false rumors that Obama, who will take on Republican John McCain in the November election, is Muslim.

"Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised as a Muslim, and is a committed Christian," the site says.

A photograph shows Obama with his hand on a Bible as he is sworn into the U.S. Senate, to counter a rumor that he used a Koran when he was sworn in.

A CNN profile of the Indonesian school he attended as a child is used to dispel a rumor that it teaches radical Islamic tenets.

The site also puts in context passages from Obama's books that have been excerpted as supposed evidence of his racial resentments, and contains a video of him leading the Pledge of Allegiance to dispel a rumor that he refuses to do so.

^ Some serious mudslinging and nastiness has already started. Especially since BO's polling is good at this stage. The right-wingers, Faux news, and political radio talk shows will pull out everything they can.

But I do think, that the American public is cynical and circumspect enough towards this because of Iraq and so much else, that it may not have as much as an impact for this election. I hope so.

I don't know much about this guy. There seem to be several sources of rumours about his religion. That might indicate either a systematic campaign against him or that there is some truth in them. Is it possible that he's a muslim pretending to be a christian? After all, he wouldn't be the only politician pretending to be a christian.

It doesn't really matter which religion he really follows; each is as bad as the other, being responsible for wars, oppression and abuse. Roll on the day that I can vote for a potential leader who can say, 'I am completely free of any influence from men who claim to either represent or to be a god'.

Since he started his campaign for President, his past and background has been scrutinized quite heavily.

Now that he's the (D) nominee there will be more research, investigating, and scrutiny. His background and past is pretty well known by now. If there is any scandal or hidden baggage it hasn't been found yet, or someone is sitting on it until the election nears.

There is no evidence that Obama is a Crypto Muslim. A secret Muslim pretending to be a Christian. He attended the Christian church in Chicago for 20 years, long before his political career began. I don't think a Muslim could pretend to be a Christian for twenty years.

There is also no evidence, witnesses, or testimony that BO ever was a Muslim, or even casually practiced the religion.

And, remember the Faux news Madrassa story - a complete lie - but they ran the story anyway.

Even a false story can stick in the minds of some people that make up the masses. If you throw enough lies on the wall, some of it might stick. And stick just enough, when you have a potentially close election coming.

The innuendo that Obama is some kind of crypto-Muslim is so laughable that it just shows how little his detractors have on him. It's kind of a shame really that Obama should even have to stoop to swat the rumour, but thats politics, and several votes rely on it.

If you know anything of Islams uncompromising stance on 'worshipping false idols', a Moslem getting married in a Christian Church would be the stuff of Jihad.

I doubt getting the Hamas Endorsement is going to be a big help in November.

I read some article that claimed Hama withdrew its endorsement after Obama's statemens about Jerusalem. (Sorry, no link.)

As for a Hamas endorsement, who cares?

Foreign organization, advocacy groups, and leaders will endorse American candidates occasionally.

Do you think an American voter who change his or her vote because of a foreign endorsement by an organization that is not formally recognized?

    I do not.

would you want this sumbitch with this qualifier to run your portfolio??

Just how much Senate experience does Barack Obama have in terms of actual work days? Not much.
From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate. That's how many days the Senate was actually in session and working.
After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World, and fill the shoes of Abraham Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan.
    143 days --
I keep leftovers in my refrigerator longer than that.
In contrast, John McCain's 26 years in Congress, 22 years of military service including 1,966 days in captivity as a POW in Hanoi now seem more impressive than ever. At 71, John McCain may just be hitting his stride.

^Actually I think it would be refreshing to see someone holding the top spot with little or no political "experience". I don't know why so many folks seem to think that it is better to have someone with decades of time spent in the political muck, as opposed to someone that has gained their life experiences somewhere else.

I don't much care for Obama's platform and McCain will most likely get my vote come November, but I don't hold Obama's level of "experience" against him. If anything IMHO he now has enough basic political experience to understand how the systems works and hopefully avoid procedural issues, while not being tainted by the nastiness that envelopes most long term politicians.

Side note in regard to Hamas: Yes, they did withdraw thier support after Obama's speech at AIPAC where he said Jerusalem should be the capital of Israel and undivided - touchy lot those Hamas.

    Hitting his stride?

He has a birthday coming up in August. The job of President is very demanding not only mentally but also physically with the travelling and commitments.

McCain's chance was in 2000, but GWB used racist push-polling to screw him in South Carolina.

As this thread is about Obama, mentioning McCain is relevant as the two are running against one another and there will be smearing and mud-slinging by both.

But Obama's critiques of McCain are far better, more accurate, and more convincing to me than McCain's criticisms of Obama.

Obama's narrow lead in the polls as they are today will widen as he kicks his campaign into full gear. The Republicans will increase the smears proportional to their desperation so Obama needs a strong anti-smear defense system!

Anyone who thinks Obama is not one savy politician and doesn't have enough "experience" to win should submit questions to Hillary on the subject.

Experience on Obama not having enough? That is...a smear. It's political.

GWB was the governor of Texas for what? 4 or 6 years, and the job of governor is set up in Texas for the governor to be weak in Texas state government.

I worked with dealerships in the past. Many used car saleman are not savvy, IMO. As for comparing Obama with a used car salesman, I don't view him in this way.

I'm not challenging your use of the term "slick," but it's not very specific.
