    Dump Twitter

    and join Bluesky

Join Bluesky Today (Bye, Invites!) - Bluesky

Bluesky adds 700,000 new members as users flee X after the US election

Social media platform Bluesky has picked up more than 700,000 new users in the week since the US election, as users seek to escape misinformation and offensive posts on X.

The influx, largely from North America and the UK, has helped Bluesky reach 14.5 million users worldwide, up from 9 million in September, the company said.

Social media researcher Axel Bruns said the platform offered an alternative to X, formerly Twitter, including a more effective system for blocking or suspending problematic accounts and policing harmful behaviour.

“It’s become a refuge for people who want to have the kind of social media experience that Twitter used to provide, but without all the far-right activism, the misinformation, the hate speech, the bots and everything else,” he said.

“The more liberal kind of Twitter community has really now escaped from there and seems to have moved en masse to Bluesky.”

Bluesky began as a project inside Twitter but became an independent company in 2022, and is now primarily owned by chief executive Jay Graber.

The platform has previously benefited from dissatisfaction with X and its billionaire owner, Elon Musk, who is closely tied to US president-elect Donald Trump’s successful election campaign. Twitter shed millions of users after rebranding to X and usage in the US slumped by more than a fifth in the subsequent seven months.

Bluesky reported picking up 3 million new users in the week after X was suspended in Brazil in September and a further 1.2 million in the two days after X announced it would allow users to view posts from people who had blocked them.

“We’re excited to welcome all of these new people, ranging from Swifties to wrestlers to city planners,” Bluesky spokesperson Emily Liu said.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian and professor at New York University, had 250,000 followers on X but picked up 21,000 followers in her first day on Bluesky this week.

“I am still on X but after January, when X could be owned by a de facto member of the Trump administration, its functions as a Trump propaganda outlet and far-right radicalization machine could be accelerated,” she said.

Bluesky is still second to Threads in the social networking category on Apple’s US App Store, which reported reaching 275 million monthly active users in November, up from 200 million in August.

The independent platform has recently added features including direct messaging and video compatibility to more closely resemble X and distinguish itself from its Meta-owned competitor.

Ben-Ghiat has found the site’s “starter packs”, or groups of people with similar expertise and interest, a refreshing way in.

“[They] promise to give Bluesky some of what I valued on Twitter/X: informed takes on a subject from multiple points of view,” she said.

Bruns, a professor at Queensland University of Technology’s Digital Media Research Center, said the explosion in user numbers had created “growing pains” as new users learned to navigate the site but was ultimately adding to the site’s momentum.

“It really feels like a throwback to those days of the early excitement about social media in many ways, and that’s what, at the moment, attracts quite a few people,” he said. “It just makes it more vibrant, more active place.”

On Monday night, New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted that she was “back” on Bluesky, saying “Good GOD it’s nice to be in a digital space with other real human beings.” Her post was liked by 27,000 people.

I have. This place is a dumpster fire! TD is now left with awful moderation and for the most part, failed (in life) posters.

The better posters have pretty much moved on.

I am a member of Asean Now (but have forgotten my password) and another forum.

Bluesky is great! You might want to check it out.

For someone who has joined the other forum you do seem to still have a lot of threads here in which you have the last word.

That happens when yours is the last post on a thread.

You seem to lack even a scintilla of self-awareness.

It's still like Grand Central Station compared to the other place you've doubtless driven folk away from, you absurd loon.

The Guardian leaving X is Elon Musk’s greatest gift

Throwing a temper-tantrum over the billionaire’s ownership of the social media platform is likely to backfire

    Tom Slater

Knitting a pussy hat. Threatening to move to Canada. Taking to public spaces to scream into the abyss. That’s sooo 2016. For those looking to ostentatiously signal their fury at the election of Donald Trump this time around, there’s only one game in town: flouncing off of X.

Yes, Trump is the American president-elect again and the global great and good really aren’t taking it well… again. Still, much of the fury this time around has been focussed not so much on “The Donald” himself, but on his richest and almost-as-hated backer, billionaire Elon Musk.

Musk Derangement Syndrome is spreading like wildfire. From New York to London to Berlin, the laptop classes are mumbling his name under their breath and mass deleting their accounts on X – the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter, which Musk bought in 2022.

The day after the election, X broke its records both for US web traffic and account deactivations, according to “digital market intelligence” company Similarweb. Ever since Musk took over, liberal-Leftists have been horrified by his efforts to turn X into a much freer platform than the Whole Foods-set struggle session it had hitherto resembled. Now, a trickle is becoming a flood.

Indeed, even legacy publications are pompously announcing they’re leaving. Today, the Guardian revealed it would no longer be posting its stuff on X, stating that the “benefits… are now outweighed by the negatives” and citing the “disturbing content” supposedly prevalent on the platform. That Britain’s premier “liberal” newspaper seems not to understand that freedom of speech means occasionally encountering things you might find offensive is a telling sign of the times.

Despite all the high-minded reasoning, the turn against X is down to one thing really. Namely, control. Twitter, when it was Twitter, was theirs. It was the platform beloved by journalists and politicians, with policies that protected their brittle sensibilities; the major platform mad enough to permanently suspend a sitting US president, purely because America’s “wine moms” demanded it.

Musk changed all that. He allowed a broader swathe of opinion, including “deplorable”, pro-Trump opinion, to be expressed on X. They’ve never forgiven him for it.

Will the X boycott – not to be confused with the sex boycott, which has been called for by roughly the same sort of people – last? Experience would suggest not. Anti-Trump tantrums are often just that – tantrums. They calm down eventually. Miley Cyrus didn’t actually move to Canada after 2016. While many are migrating over to Bluesky, an alternative platform, now, I’m old enough to remember the abortive Mastodon exodus, and the Threads exodus. These people find X too hard to quit.

All I’ll say is, as an X user, I hope the Guardian and the Bluesky converts and the celebs do stay, or return. Not for the articles, or the insights, but for the laughs. To those of us who haven’t been in the grips of their elitist, anti-populist hysteria over the past eight years, watching so many supposedly wise and well-educated people say ridiculous things on a daily basis has been hilarious, not to mention eye-opening. Long may it continue.

X sees largest user exodus since Musk takeover

On the day after the election, Nov. 6, X experienced its largest user exodus since Elon Musk bought the platform in 2022. And now, users are flooding to alternative text-based social media apps like Bluesky and Instagrams Threads.

Those numbers appear to be climbing, as users and brands like The Guardian and Don Lemon continue to announce their departures from the platform.

NBC News spoke to six people who have joined or committed to using Threads and Bluesky in place of X after the election because of Musk. Each of them cited growing issues on X, including bots, partisan advertisements and harassment, which they all felt reached a tipping point when Donald Trump was elected president last week with Musks support.

    ________

I do not know if the The Guardian has signed up on Blue Sky, but it would be nice to see them there.

Guardian will no longer post on Elon Musks X from its official accounts

The Guardian has more than 80 accounts on X with approximately 27 million followers.

The Guardian said content on the platform about which it had longstanding concerns included far-right conspiracy theories and racism.

Great. So now both sides can have their own echo chamber, and have their beliefs reinforced by others of their own cloth to the point of absolutism. Nothing divisive in that.

No, it's what the left does. X allows free speech, warts and all. The left could say anything they want to challenge opposing views. They could even troll right wingers in the comments with facts. But instead they run away to safe spaces whenever their views are challenged. You can hate Musk as much as you want (I do), but I doubt Bluesky will allow posters the freedom he does. X doesn't choose to be an echo chamber, it became that way because the countering opinion jumped ship, to deliberately be in an echo chamber.

Yes, you're right. Twatter allows Nazis, racists and other bigots to spread their message like cancer.

Which I supposed you could argue is a form of warts.

And it also allowed Pickel to arrive at a conclusion about half an hour after a bit of a kerfuffle had taken place in the West Midlands of England.

Yes, it's quite remarkable what they can do these days.
