    President Trump - 2nd Term

What will be the best strategy for dealing with a 2nd Trump term should he be re-elected?

The polls are finely balanced 2 weeks out so a strategy would be useful to safely manage a potential further Trump presidency.

The biggest worries for me are his isolationist attitude towards western allies, his strange admiration for dictators, his normalisation of lying as part of political discourse and his disrespect for democratic norms such as the peaceful transition of power.

Having said that I do think a lot of his provocative behaviour is braggadocio and showmanship and I don't think he is the genuine threat to democracy that some say he is.

Having read the various books published by his former secretaries and other commentators, his inability and unwillingness to listen to the advice of seasoned statesmen and diplomats is a major practical concern.

If he were happy to carry on with his pantomime style presentation in public but actually take advice behind the scenes he would be less of a serious concern.

But still, if the machinery of government was able to trundle forwards for 4 years without a wheel coming off before then maybe it is possible to do it again.

I heard last week that Kamala was going on Joe Rogan and I thought that would be a significant platform for her, being mostly young males, numbering something like 20m followers across various platforms. But that seems to have been cancelled due to 'scheduling' (I wonder whose scheduling was the problem). Now I heard that instead Trump will be going on Rogan.

There has only been 1 president in history who was reelected to a non-consecutive 2nd term (Grover Cleveland in the late 1800s) so it would be a very rare electoral event.

I certainly hope this post is premature, dead on arrival. How in the world did the USA ever get to this point considering all those points you noted. It's a head-shaker.

Kamala is calling Trump a Fascist, which it certainly seems the case. Another Hitler in office if he gets re-elected. Scary stuff if he gets in.

Trump really does want to do most of the very crazy things he has spoken about.

If he is elected President this time, it is no longer possible to tell him ‘You can’t do that, it’s illegal’

With immunity, and the Supreme Court on his side, he can anything he wants with complete impunity.

He will surround himself with yes men, to do his crazy bidding.

Exactly. Last time there was some pushback on him. He has learnt his lesson. He will surround himself with yes men prepared to do anything he asks. He will spend four years taking "revenge" on all he perceives as his enemies. He will trash the entire government administration and put in loyal trumpanzies in those positions.

Trump coming back will be a very very dangerous thing for America, and frankly the rest of the world.

Much of the blame falls on the utter hypocrites in the republican party. Neutered curs the lot of them.

I have voted Harris. Registered Republican as I have been for 60 years. Hopefully others like me will vote Harris as well. I want my party back. If they don't they deserve what they will get.

Higer taxes, higher inflation across the board, loss of key allies in Europe and Asia, increased health care cost, social security reduction, huge demonstration re his deportation of immigrants both legal and illegal, and we will before his term ends be drawn into major wars in both Europe and Asia.

He will be mostly absent from getting much involved in Congress leaving legislation to the right wing nutters in Congress. Why?, he will spend most of his time on his revenge list. A list that will make Nixon's enemy list look small.

Make America great again my ass.

I am hoping that this will be one of Looper's shorter threads.

At this point, some polls suggest Trump is making some headway. Astonishing to me, it is what it is. There are some communities in swing states, such as the Arab community, who will punish the Democrats without any special affection for Trump.

Considering a Trump presidency, he is at least a known quantity. There might be those in government and military positions considering what they will do if ordered to act against the constitution. There are almost certainly people out there prepared to take another shot at him, which is not a good thing in any democracy, the Secret Service must be very worried.

My personal opinion is that Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Mother Theresa of the SC, actually screwed the Supreme Court by refusing to retire gracefully during a Democratic presidency. How different history might have looked. The now loaded SC is a problem, whoever wins the presidency. One can only hope that amongst their number are a couple of Republican appointees who will place the rule of law before their political affiliations, when the time comes.

Trump is elderly, even compared to me, so Vance could end up in the chair. A puppet if ever there was one. Would that in fact be a terrible thing? I thought so, now I think some of the Republican old guard would be too strong for him.

So, if it has to be Trump, bring it on. Let's see how it benefits his faithful.

I agree 100%. This is exactly why Americans in general hate politics. I have been out with numerous friends since returning here and none of them are going to vote. They all similarly state the same reason. Its all BS, petty juvenile behavior and neither candidate is a clear leader. I feel compelled to vote for Kamala but not because she convinced me that she can do anything close to what she has said but rather to keep that raving lunatic Trump out of Office.

Sad really but what we have digressed to since Trump took center stage. What is even more bothersome is win or lose Trump's rhetoric will go on but I would prefer it to be that he is complaining that it was rigged and why he lost versus him winning.

9 more days until the US might have a civil war.

Joe Rogan leaves door open for Kamala Harris interview on popular podcast | US elections 2024 | The Guardian

It is a big platform with a lot of young male voters where she most needs inroads.

But she has demanded 1 hour only and Rogan comes to her which he does not do.

I watched the Donald and he did quite well over a 3 hour interview. His tone and manner have become more relaxed in recent interviews.

JD Vance has also been on for 3 hours, but I have not watched that.

I guess Kamala is not going to do it at this late stage.

Watched the 1st 10 minutes of Donald - The Movie. It has a good hook at the start. Will defo watch before Tuesday as it will not be so much fun after, either way.

I am a long time fan of Sam Harris as a thinker and commentator. He despises Trump.

I have only recently known much about Ben Shapiro but I have also recently read all his various books. He supports Trump.

I have only watched the 1st half hour of this but it is interesting to listen to them as they both argue the case with measure.

Shapiro does seem to provide a tenuously plausible presentation of how an intelligent person can bring themselves to vote for a noxious narcissist such as Trump based on empirical outcomes of his first term to offset against his excesses of personality dysfunction.

FFS, here we go with the “tone and manner”, again.
As long as he wasn’t ranting and raving, like he does at his rallies, you’re OK with the plethora of lies, and distortion of truth he spewed for three hours?

Like the rest of the fawning ingrates, he changed from hating baldy orange cunto to kissing his fucking arse.

He also thinks abortion should be illegal even in the case of rape and incest.

He's quite a revolting excuse for a human being and of course make lots of money out of trumpanzees.
