    Germany votes for historic boost to defence spending

    German lawmakers have voted to allow a huge increase in defence and infrastructure spending - a seismic shift for the country that could reshape European defence.

    A two-thirds majority of Bundestag parliamentarians, required for the change, approved the vote on Tuesday.

    The law will exempt spending on defence and security from Germany's strict debt rules, and create a €500bn ($547bn; £420bn) infrastructure fund.

    If it were accompanied by a compulsory 5 years military service for all male arrivals from the middle east it would be a good start on rebuilding Europe's emasculated defences.

    Top US Supreme Court justice rebukes Trump's call to impeach judge

    The chief justice of the US Supreme Court has released a rare statement in response to President Donald Trump's call to impeach a judge who ruled against his administration over migrant deportations.

    "For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision," Chief Justice John Roberts said in a statement.

    He added that the "normal appellate review process exists for that purpose".

    Trump earlier referred to US District Judge James Boasberg as a "troublemaker and agitator" after he ordered the administration to halt deportations of accused gang members to El Salvador.

    I think judges need to wield their judicial power judiciously, and blocking the largely popular move to expel the gang members just does not feel like a very useful application of power

    They would be better to keep their powder dry for stuff that is less popular with the public

    The Supreme Court will be squirming at Trump's antics. I think their days as Trump's rubber stamp will be drawing to a close. The clash between the Supreme Court and Trump is going to get really ugly. Som nam na.

    Justice needs be blind , Trump is a harbinger of injustice he has mistreated women and the weak and poor in USA with seeming impunity, he encouraged the failed January 6th coup has been impeached, convicted of over 30 cases and had to pay of a series of women he abused. He is now bringing those values back to the human stage.

    We all have faults as my own family will aver , I however limit my frustration to barking at the TV , swotting the odd fly and having a poke at funny comments here and over on Topper's color Helgavision.

    SCOTUS has fucked itself. Their pride and arrogance have led to this situation. They read the constitutional clause about people who had engaged in insurrection could not hold office, and twisted the plain meaning into a pretzel to allow him to stand.. At least once Trump was found by a court to be guilty of insurrection. They then read the constitution and said it gave Trump pretty much complete immunity to - well, everything. Lastly they deliberately delayed his cases beyond any reason to give him a way out.

    Trump now thinks the judiciary is his pet lap dog, and he can ignore it when he wants. SCOTUS has no "enforcement" power - so if Trump ignores what they say - the last check on his power will be gone (and effectively so will SCOTUS).

    Som nom nah Roberts, Alito and Clarence - you created him, and he is going to destroy you. Fucking stupid hypocrites.

    US President Donald Trump revoked security clearances from his previously defeated Democratic election rivals, Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton, as well as a number of other former officials and critics.
    Trump said in February he was revoking security clearance for his predecessor Joe Biden. His order confirmed that decision, adding that he was also revoking the security clearance of "any other member" of the Biden family.
    Of course the crooked crime family can all see what they want.

    Re the war in Ukraine, what I fail to understand is that, having drained Russia of almost all of its conventional weapons, why is the USA deciding to back down.

    Surely, the US can call a halt to the war on Ukraine terms and still have access to all the rare earth minerals it would like.

    Russia is a spent force, it cannot defeat a NATO alliance and any attempt to do so would lead to some kind of revolution. So why give in to their terms now? It makes no sense whatsoever.

    Trump doesn't see Russia as a threat to the USA. He sees China as a threat to the USA. Europe might see Russia as a threat, but that's Europe's problem not America's, in Trump's view.

    Trump doesn't care about Ukraine and he hates Zelenskyy because of the Hunter Biden fiasco. The main point for Trump is that he doesn't want to pay for the defense of Europe. As the Signal chat revealed, the Trump administration is sick of a free-loading Europe. I understand that view. With Trump, the $ are very important.
