UAW chief: Trump has ‘never supported working class people’

United Auto Workers (UAW) Shawn Fain slammed former President Trump on Friday, saying he’s beholden to billionaires and has “never supported working-class people.”

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Fain highlighted the unionÂ’s decision to endorse Vice President Harris and the pivotal role UAW has played in the presidential campaign over the last year.

“Trump has never supported working class people. He has never supported unions,” Fain said. “But he sure as hell was trying to pander for our votes now.”

Fain originally endorsed President Biden after the president joined striking UAW workers on the picket line last year.

After Biden suspended his campaign, UAW made the decision to back Harris. At a rally, Fain said if elected, Harris will continue delivering for working-class Americans, while Trump will work for billionaires.

The UAW president has drawn the ire of Trump. During his speech at the Republican National Convention last month, Trump slammed Fain and called for him to be fired. The former president said UAW “ought to be ashamed” for allowing Fain to endorse the Democratic Party.

In a post online, the union said Trump is “a scab and a billionaire,” saying they are not on his side.

Fain dismissed TrumpÂ’s insult as typical behavior from the former president, the AP said.

“All the man does [is] name call, label people. He never has solutions,” Fain said. “That’s the problem in leadership. You need to find solutions.”

Fain told the news site that he’s confident Harris will remain an advocate for working people. She walked the picket line with General Motors striking workers in 2019 and was there with Biden “though a lot of things we’ve been through,” he said.

“She’s been there for labor,” he said, later adding, “I think she’s a brilliant woman. A very strong person.”

Harris, Fain argued, understands the issues.

“I think Trump’s just all talk. That’s all he’s ever been. He’s a showman,” he said.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

DNC launches mobile billboard outside of Trump rally in Atlanta

The Democratic National Committee on Saturday launched a campaign in Atlanta against former President Donald Trump just hours before the GOP candidate is set to arrive in the city.

On the mobile billboard of the arena Trump is scheduled to speak at, the DNC played a video of TrumpÂ’s previous controversial comments, some of which have been labeled as racist.

The Hill received an exclusive look at the ad, which is just over one minute. The ad includes some of Trump’s most noteworthy comments, such as when he called African countries “s–thole countries” and said violent protests with white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va., had “very fine people, on both sides.”

In one of the clips, MSNBC’s Joy Reid can be heard reporting on Trump’s comments calling for the death penalty for the Exonerated Five before the ad cuts to Trump himself saying, “I want society to hate ‘em.”

The clip is followed by a quote from Trump in his former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City John O’Donnell’s 1991 book: “I’ve got Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day. I think that the guy is lazy. And it’s probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks.”

But itÂ’s not only TrumpÂ’s words that are blasted on the mobile billboard.

Another clip shows Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) harsh criticism of Trump before the 2016 election in which Graham called Trump a “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot.”

The new ad comes after the former president faced widespread criticism for remarks he made about Vice President HarrisÂ’s identity in Chicago this week at the National Association of Black JournalistsÂ’s annual convention.

A clip from the convention of ABC NewsÂ’s Rachel Scott confronting Trump over some of his previous comments before asking the former president why Black voters should cast their ballots for him is the last video in the ad.

It ends with the words “They shouldn’t” across a black screen.

Former President Trump says he has pulled out of the Sept. 10 ABC News debate with Vice President Harris and proposed a new one on Fox News instead.

Why it matters: With Trump's cancellation, there are currently no scheduled debates between the presidential candidates with less than 100 days until the election.

    • Fox News hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum would moderate the newly proposed debate which would take place in Pennsylvania, Trump said in a Truth Social post on Friday.

Driving the news: Trump said in the same Truth Social post that due to his litigation against ABC News and journalist George Stephanopoulos, whose last name Trump intentionally misspelled, the ABC debate would pose a "conflict of interest."

    • Both Harris and Trump have said they are willing to debate before the election, and Harris' campaign is pushing for the Sept. 10 date.

What they're saying: "Donald Trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out," Harris' communications director Michael Tyler said in a statement emailed to Axios on Saturday.

    • "He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on Sept 10. The Vice President will be there one way or the other to take the opportunity to speak to a prime time national audience."

Kamala Harris' prosecutorial record takes center stage

Vice President Kamala Harris' prosecutorial record is facing fresh scrutiny now that she's running to be president.

The big picture: Harris is pointing to her time as a district attorney and California Attorney General as a point of contrast against former President Trump, the GOP nominee who is a convicted felon.

State of play: It's a risky strategy as Harris has consistently faced criticism from some progressives who accused her of being too tough on crime and helped derail her 2020 presidential campaign.

    • This time around, she is betting it will help her against Trump.
    • "I took on perpetrators of all kinds: predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain," she said at a campaign rally in Wisconsin this last week. "So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump's type."

Yes, but: The Trump campaign has simultaneously accused Harris of being weak on crime and a San Francisco "liberal" — a classic GOP attack against a Democrat.

Reality check: The violent crime rate per 100,000 residents in California dropped by 10% during Harris's first four years in office as the state's attorney general, according to an Axios review of FBI crime data.

    • The violent crime rate in the state was 439.6 per 100,000 residents the year before she took office and fell to 396.4 by 2014.
    • During that period, the California Department of Justice improved DNA testing capabilities and cleared the state's DNA backlog for the first time. Her office also signed an agreement with Mexico's AG to combat transnational gangs.
    • However, violent crime surged to 444.8 in 2016 during her last year in office to a six-year high, an Axios review found.

Zoom in: As District Attorney of San Francisco, the number of cases from violent crimes in the city her office cleared skyrocketed by 24% during her time as DA, an Axios review found.

    • Those cleared cases came as the number of violent crimes rose steadily in the city of San Francisco during her first five years in office then fell 15% in her last two years, the analysis found.

Between the lines: Harris' early record and comments at the time showed she was part of the fledging restorative justice movement of the early 2000s while balancing a moderate approach to fighting crime.

    • In her 2009 book, "Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor's Plan to Make Us Safer," Harris urged Americans to see crime as "a non-partisan issue" while pushing programs to intervene on potential repeat nonviolent offenders.
    • The left, she wrote, needed to get "past biases against law enforcement and (recognize) that even low-incoming communities...want and deserve great public-safety resources."
    • "For the right, it means acknowledging that crime prevention is a key to crime fighting, and that the tools we need to ensure community safety are far more diverse than simply laws that make prison sentences longer."

Flashback: Harris dubbed herself a "progressive prosecutor" in her 2019 memoir, "The Truths We Hold: An American Journey."

    • Shortly after it was published, the New York Times published a critical op-ed, titled "Kamala Harris Was Not a 'Progressive Prosecutor," claiming she was often on the wrong side of history while serving as California's attorney general.

    Controversial stances

    • As San Francisco DA, Harris faced backlash for her decision not to pursue the death penalty against the man convicted of murdering San Francisco police officer Isaac Espinoza. Following that decision, no police union endorsed her for a decade, per the Atlantic.
    • As attorney general, Harris' office was against DNA testing requested by Kevin Cooper, a Black man convicted of four murders. Year later, Harris urged California to allow the testing, which eventually found evidence of Cooper's guilt. He has maintained he is innocent but remains on death row.

    • Harris supported a controversial 2011 truancy law while she was attorney general that threatened jail time for parents of children who had too many consecutive, unexcused school absences. She later expressed regret saying her intent was not to punish parents but to send them a warning.

    Criminal justice policies

Harris has been accused of imprisoning an estimated 1,500 people for marijuana-related offenses while she was attorney general, for which she was dubbed "Kamala the Cop."

    • While she oversaw about 1,956 misdemeanor and felony convictions for "marijuana possession, cultivation, or sale," per Reuters, most of the people convicted during that time did not serve jail time, defense attorneys and prosecutors in Harris' office told Mercury News.
    • Harris later came out in support of the decriminalization — and eventually legalization — of marijuana for recreational use, cosponsoring the Marijuana Justice Act.
    • She said in 2022 that, "Nobody should have to go to jail for smoking weed."

Harris has launched criminal justice reform programs, such as her 2005 reentry initiative called "Back on Track," aimed at reducing repeat offenses among low-level drug-trafficking defendants.

    • Her office also launched the OpenJustice platform in 2016 in an effort to make law enforcement data more transparent.

    Police reform advocacy

Harris has a history of police reform advocacy, which she recently raised as a priority after Sonia Massey's death.

    • She denounced the fatal shooting of the unarmed Black woman after police body camera footage was released this week, Harris calling it a "senseless death."
    • "Sonya Massey deserved to be safe," Harris said in a statement. "After she called the police for help, she was tragically killed in her own home at the hands of a responding officer sworn to protect and serve.

Trump goes low as Harris gains ground

Donald Trump broadsided Kamala Harris in a string of derisive social media posts on Saturday, focusing his attacks on the vice president’s intellect after a week that saw her both out-fundraise him and surpass him in some battleground state polls.

In a succession of Truth Social posts after calling off his planned ABC debate with Harris, Trump called Harris “low IQ,” “dumb,” and said she lacked the “mental capacity” to debate him.

The former president’s remarks indicated a sustained ratcheting up of the rhetoric against Harris that many in his own party have cautioned against, fearful of detracting from what they view as more favorable lines of attack on immigration and inflation. Even as he accused Harris of enabling “corrupt and open borders” and a “terrible economy,” Trump overshadowed those critiques with personal insults, reminiscent of the rhetoric he used against Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign.

Trump’s latest spree of disparaging attacks against Harris began Friday evening, when he backed out of an originally planned ABC debate on Sept. 10 and instead proposed a match-up with Harris on Fox News on Sept. 4 — albeit on his terms, including a “FULL ARENA AUDIENCE!” in the swing state of Pennsylvania.

“Anytime Trump isn’t talking about inflation, immigration and the economy, he’s not winning voters,” said Barrett Marson, a Republican strategist in Arizona. “Going after Harris’ intellect isn’t going to move middle-of-the-road voters. They’re not going to care about whether a former prosecuting attorney is dumb or smart. They want to hear about a plan to rein in inflation and bring down interest rates and make the economy work for the middle class.”

Marson added: “He wants the bouncy house that is a Fox News crowd. He doesn’t want to do ABC. This is a nice way for him to rile her up.”

Harris fired back on social media on Saturday, accusing Trump of backtracking on a pledge to debate “any time, any place” and suggesting that she’d attend the previously agreed upon ABC debate whether Trump does or not.

Trump then issued an ultimatum, saying he’d either debate Harris on Fox News or not at all — while lobbing a number of insults against her intelligence and accusing her of lacking the “REAL capacity” to face him one-on-one.

“Does anyone notice that Kamala Harris doesn’t do Interviews? That’s because she’s really DUMB! She’s unable to speak properly without a Teleprompter,” Trump, who also routinely employs a teleprompter at his rallies, posted on Truth Social, comparing her speaking abilities to those of President Joe Biden and attaching a clipped video of the two welcoming prisoners freed from Russia back to American soil.

    Snip

Harris has overtaken Trump in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin, even if only by a few percentage points of support, according to a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll released Tuesday. And a survey by Susquehanna Polling found that she held a 4 percentage-point lead over Trump in Pennsylvania, earning the support of 47 percent of voters to Trump’s 43 percent.

Meanwhile, Trump has struggled to settle on a consistent line of attack against Harris since Biden dropped out of the race. While Trump’s campaign and allies planned to hit Harris on immigration and on her record as a “liberal prosecutor” and a “radical,” the former president stepped on that message earlier this week when he questioned Harris’ racial identity during a conference of Black journalists in Chicago.

At that conference, Trump drew widespread criticism for suggesting that Harris “happened to turn Black” for political gain. He’s kept up that language since Wednesday, even as some Republicans have urged the party to keep a singular focus on attacking Harris’ policies, not her race.

“I think what we need to do as Republicans is to continue to focus voters on the failed economy, the failed border,” said Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) in an interview last week. “So I just can’t take the bait and talk about anything else.”

For their part, Democrats argued that identity-based attacks would ultimately hurt Republicans. Strategist Michael Trujillo, who worked on Clinton’s 2008 campaign, said Trump is amplifying the kind of rhetoric used by the “underbelly of the Republican base” against Obama — which was ultimately unsuccessful in 2008 and 2012.

“If I’m a Republican, I’d rather win on my better policy ideas, not because of racist memes,” Trujillo said.

Trump’s attacks on Harris’ race have also drawn the ire of some of her prospective running mates, even as the candidate herself has not explicitly mentioned Trump’s race- and gender-based insults. Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly slammed Trump’s comments that Harris “turned Black” during an interview on Wednesday and said his “divisiveness” was evidence of the weakness of his campaign.

“That’s why he doesn’t want to get on a debate stage with her — he’s scared,” Kelly said. “And I understand why he’s scared.”

    All very well, Willy

But in my humble opinion, she can't possibly be the best candidate for the higest office in the US of A.

Then I can start speculating, cause that's all I have, on why she is that candidate.

"Last minute entry", "compromise candidate" etc

Coloured and female could be a plus too.

The party is actually loaded with talent unlike the GOP, however at this late stage the VP is the only option, and she is currently riding a pretty big wave considering she has not even announced her VP candidate. Meanwhile, the orange moron seems to be imploding.

Who came up with that phrase? It really is quite silly.

However, yes, the difference in the polls is very close. Neither side should be complacent about winning the election at this stage.

Worth a read for some of us:

Kamala Harris is everywhere, but the big hype could be her downfall, says United States adviser

Although according to Mads Dalgaard Madsen, there is a lot of talk about Harris online, it does not mean that the election is decided.

Kamala Harris er overalt, men den store hype kan blive hendes fald, vurderer USA-radgiver | Valg i USA | DR

Thousands of videos and memes have already been shared, and there are plenty of words of praise about Kamala Harris online.

But with all the hype - support - there is for Kamala Harris, she may fall into the same trap as Hillary Clinton.

This is the assessment of Mads Dalgaard Madsen, who is a former domestic policy adviser at the Danish embassy in Washington D.C. and current United States adviser at the defense company Terma, which sells radar technology, among other things.

In fact, he believes that there is an overhype - or too much resentment - around Kamala Harris right now, with Democrats and celebrities such as George Clooney and Beyonce announcing their support for her.

Beyonce allowed Kamala Harris to use her songs in Harris' campaign. To the song 'Freedom', Kamala Harris stormed onto the stage in the important swing state of Wisconsin.

Because the election, says Mads Dalgaard Madsen, will be decided in the swing states.

These are the states that are known to alternate between voting red or blue in elections. This applies to states such as Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. These are the same states that in 2016 made Donald Trump president.

And here, according to Mads Dalgaard Madsen, it does not help that celebrities spread their stardust - on the contrary.

"The more Beyonce and all these stars from the elite from the West Coast talk about how great it would be if we got a black female president, and now LGBTQ rights are at the top of the agenda, and how important it is to elect Kamala Harris because she's black. This plays counterproductively in the swing states.

"If there's one thing these people in Pennsylvania and Michigan hate, it's when Hollywood actors come and tell them how to vote.

    What is a swing state?

A swing state is a term for a state that does not necessarily always vote for the same party.
In 2016, Trump - who is a Republican - won the battle for Michigan's votes in the presidential election. But four years later, Joe Biden - who is a Democrat - beat Trump in the battle for Michigan. Therefore, Michigan is considered a swing state.
California, on the other hand, is one of the states that the Democrats can almost always count on when there is an election. Therefore, the state is not considered a swing state.

    Welcome to Kamalot

Among other things, Mads Dalgaard Madsen believes that after the election, we will look back on, among other things, this cover of New York Magazine, as one of the signs of the overhype around Kamala Harris.

The wave that gives Kamala Harris a tailwind on social media, he believes is aimed at left-wing voters who want to talk about gender identity and race and have these issues high on the agenda.

And if Kamala Harris can win some extra voters on that agenda in states like California and New York, then it doesn't mean much in the whole count.

Because those states are already blue, and since the election is decided by electors and not by the total number of votes, she should focus on the swing states, Mads Dalgaard Madsen believes.

    Understanding the U.S. electoral system

In order to win the election, it is primarily about getting the votes of the majority of the 538 so-called electors, who are distributed across the country's 50 states.
Electors are representatives nominated by each presidential candidate in each state.
When voters vote for a candidate, they technically vote for that candidate's elector to sit in the electoral college.
To get a seat behind the desk in the Oval Office, it is about reaching the magic limit of 270 electors - i.e. the majority.
You can learn more about the electoral system here.

"It's as if you celebrate Kamala Harris to such an extent because she's a woman, because she's black, and you fall so in love with her that you forget that the election is decided by some voters who don't necessarily agree with that agenda.

In the swing states, according to him, there is a large white working class that would rather hear Kamala Harris talk about the economy, inflation, immigration and jobs. These are some of the issues that occupy voters here. For them, it can also be too much if there is too much focus on gender and skin colour.

    - You just have to be careful not to overhype it, because then there will be a counter-pressure where these people in the industrial and rust belt feel talked down to, says Mads Dalgaard Madsen.

He points out that he sees the same trend as in the 2016 election, when Hillary Clinton was up against Donald Trump.

As is well known, it was Donald Trump who ran away with the election victory, and according to Mads Dalgaard Madsen, this is partly due to the fact that the Democrats focused too much on Hillary Clinton's gender, rather than telling voters about her policies.

    - There was so much hype that now you would have the first female president in the United States, but these identity politics issues are just quite debated in the value struggle in the United States. As soon as the Democrats talk too much about this, they lose votes because there are parts of Americans who think they are going too far, says Mads Dalgaard Madsen.

    Male Vice President

Kamala Harris was chosen as the Democratic presidential candidate on Friday, and it remains to be seen who she will choose as her vice president.

But if you ask Mads Dalgaard Madsen, it will most likely be a white man from one of the important swing states.

He points to Josh Shapiro as one of the obvious candidates. He is white and the governor of Pennsylvania.

    - There will be a representative from this area who can almost compensate for the fact that Kamala Harris is this Californian, left-wing, San Francisco hippie that many of the voters think of her, says Mads Dalgaard Madsen.

According to him, the coming weeks will show whether Kamala Harris manages to speak to voters in the swing states.

Next week, Kamala Harris will hold a voter rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Mads Dalgaard Madsen is excited to see what tone she will strike.
