If you want people to fight for you (as a country) then they need to believe in something. You may treat it with disdain but if it motivates people to fight for a cause then it's achieved the desired effect. Whatever you may think, a common good and a common evil unites a society and without it civilisation falters.

Just as long as they allow the cynics in this world to just observe and report and carry on with their lives, I'm happy.

Americans, akin to the Russians, are essentially an unsophisticated species with societies still developing but they do share one very significant feature to their cultural landscape: they both feel the need to have a ‘leader’ who in their gormless naivety and general stupidity actually believe will run the country.
