Paetongtarn vows not to yield to threats after Hun Sen’s ultimatum

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra vowed that she would not tolerate threats or misinformation following Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen’s 24-hour ultimatum demanding Thailand fully reopen its border checkpoints.

She made the remark after a two-hour meeting to discuss the outcome of last weekend’s Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) session.

Paetongtarn described the JBC meeting as a success, noting that both sides agreed on the framework of discussions. She said the details were consistent with the statement earlier released by the Foreign Ministry.

She stressed that talks have been held at every level, from operational units to the prime ministerial level. A new Thai working team has now been established, led by Deputy Defence Minister Gen Nattapol Nakpanit.

The working team has been assigned to determine a framework for how Thailand will collect intelligence, prepare defences, and respond to future developments, Paetongtarn explained.

She reaffirmed that Thailand does not accept the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), saying that the government had studied the relevant legal and historical context thoroughly.

Addressing Hun Sen’s demand that Thailand fully reopen all border checkpoints within 24 hours, Paetongtarn clarified that the border was never officially closed. Rather, operating hours were adjusted following recent clashes inside Thai territory and discussions about troop repositioning.

The National Security Council (NSC) authorised the military to assess the situation on the ground and adapt accordingly. However, since the Cambodian side has refused to reposition its forces, Thailand has had to enforce revised checkpoint operating times in response, she said.

Paetongtarn also revealed that her first conversation with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet took place on May 28. Both sides agreed on the desire for peace, avoiding conflict and preserving lives on both sides of the border.

She stressed the importance of bilateral dialogue as the appropriate channel for resolving tensions and reaching mutual understanding. However, she expressed concern over the way some of these discussions have been selectively shared on social media, outside official frameworks, which has led to public confusion and diplomatic complications.

Paetongtarn warned that Cambodia’s online posts must consider the potential impact on bilateral ties and local livelihoods, particularly the effects of border closures on Thai and Cambodian citizens.

She expressed concern over trade disruption, especially regarding fruit exports, if all checkpoints were to be shut. She noted that the Cambodian side had been informed that Thailand would hold a meeting today to assess the situation and determine further actions.

Paetongtarn also revealed she had sent a message to Cambodian Prime Minister the same day, proposing that both sides convene the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) and the Regional Border Committee (RBC) at the military level to address the issue.

She said the JBC meeting acknowledged both sides were engaging in talks with the shared goal of peace, and that the Thai Foreign Ministry had already clarified the content of the discussions. There were no obstacles or unexpected developments, she added.

When asked about Cambodia's apparent use of information warfare, Paetongtarn stated that such tactics do not benefit either nation.

“There was a prior agreement not to release unofficial information. Communication must be coordinated, because those on the front lines and those consuming the news are not the same,” she said, “Decisions must be made with empathy. It's easy to say ‘stand firm’ from afar, but we must first understand the reality on the ground.”

She said that new checkpoint operating hours were implemented due to an increase in heavy and long-range weaponry being moved into the area. If weapons are brought in without time restrictions and an incident occurs, the damage could be substantial, she warned.

Asked how Thailand could make the world understand it is not encroaching on foreign territory, Paetongtarn stressed the need to formalise discussions. We must convene the GBC or RBC to record everything in writing, so the international community can clearly see the agreements made.

She added that the Foreign Ministry had called for a meeting with foreign ambassadors in Thailand this afternoon to explain the country’s position and the facts on the ground.

Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa had earlier spoken with his Cambodian counterpart on June 4 to reiterate Thailand’s stance.

“We may have communicated less in public, but that’s because we respect bilateral mechanisms and value mutual dignity. What needs to be done officially must remain within those frameworks,” she said.

“When there are communication mismatches, we must make clear that we have never provoked violence or made any inflammatory remarks—domestically or internationally.”

When asked how Thailand would respond to Cambodia’s information warfare, Paetongtarn said the government must provide clear explanations, adding that both the cabinet and military agree on the importance of protecting Thailand’s sovereignty. She stressed the need to avoid escalation or loss of life while firmly upholding national interests.

She reaffirmed that there is no conflict between the government and the military, noting that they consult closely on all matters.

“I want to reiterate that the government and the military are working in full harmony. I urge everyone to support us in unity. Today, we stand in defence of our sovereignty. Let the world know that Thailand is united, and we will not allow ourselves to be bullied or slandered,” the Prime Minister declared.

“We are a nation of dignity and strength. If international rules are not respected, global recognition will not follow.”

Foreign Ministry rules out settling border disputes with Cambodia in ICJ

Thailand rules out ICJ role in Cambodia border disputes, insists on bilateral talks via JBC, says ICJ has no jurisdiction without mutual consent.

The Thai Foreign Ministry has ruled out settling the ongoing border disputes with Cambodia through the International Court of Justice (ICJ), insisting that Thailand does not accept the court’s jurisdiction.

Thailand rejects ICJ jurisdiction in Cambodian border case

Benjamin Sukanjanajtee, Director-General of the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs (DTLA), said on Monday that Thailand has not recognised the jurisdiction of the ICJ since 1960 — a position shared by 118 other countries.

He stressed that the ICJ can only try border disputes when both parties accept its jurisdiction, which is not the case for Thailand.

Benjamin added that the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU43) between Thailand and Cambodia clearly states that both countries must first attempt to resolve border issues through negotiation — not unilateral legal action, as Cambodia has attempted.

Cambodia files complaint with ICJ over four sites

On Sunday, Cambodia reportedly submitted a complaint to the ICJ, seeking a ruling on ownership of four disputed sites:

    • Ta Moan Thom temple
    • Ta Moan Toch temple
    • Ta Krabei temple
    • Emerald Triangle area

Benjamin said that Thailand has not yet been officially informed about the complaint by either Cambodia or the ICJ. As a result, the DTLA remains unaware of the exact content and legal basis of the case.

He said the DTLA has already formed an international legal team to study the case and prepare a defence strategy if needed.

JBC remains primary mechanism for resolving disputes

Speaking at a press conference hosted by the Department of Information, Nikorndej Balankura, Director-General of the department and spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, reiterated that Thailand remains committed to using the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) as the key bilateral mechanism for settling border issues.

Nikorndej expressed disappointment that Cambodia had excluded the four disputed areas from the JBC meeting held in Phnom Penh on June 14–15, choosing instead to bring the matter before the ICJ.

He said Thailand made it clear during the JBC meeting that it does not accept the ICJ’s jurisdiction, and Cambodia was formally informed of this position.

Thai side highlights progress in technical talks

Prasat Prasatwinijchai, chairman of the Thai JBC delegation, said that although the four disputes were excluded, the recent JBC session was one of the smoothest in years.

He noted that both sides agreed on several technical matters, including surveying 45 out of 74 border demarcation markers dating back to the reign of King Rama VI.

They also agreed to use LiDAR technology and drones for accurate surveying and mapping.

Prasat confirmed that Thailand did not accept Cambodia’s 1:200,000 scale map and that it was not raised in the meeting. Thailand continues to insist on using its 1:50,000 scale maps, which offer greater detail.

    No retaliation against Cambodian workers

Nikorndej also clarified that the Thai government would not retaliate against Cambodian migrant workers, despite the border tensions. He said all Cambodian workers in Thailand are free to decide whether they wish to remain.

He emphasised that all of Thailand’s diplomatic responses are at the government level and not intended to affect people-to-people relations.

He also pointed out that the government does not use social media as an official channel for diplomatic communication.

Delay in announcement due to late return of Thai delegation

Regarding the delayed release of information on the JBC outcome, Nikorndej explained that the Thai delegation returned to Bangkok at 9pm on Sunday, making it too late to hold a press conference that night. A written statement was released instead, with the formal press conference held on Monday.

Despite disagreements on certain issues, Thailand will continue to use bilateral mechanisms including the JBC, the General Border Committee (GBC), and the Regional Border Committee (RBC) to address and resolve border disputes with Cambodia.

Thailand suspends June deployment of over 2,000 workers to Israel and Iran

Thailand halts the June dispatch of over 2,000 workers to Israel and Iran amid escalating tensions and prepares emergency evacuation plans.

Labour Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn on Monday (June 16, 2025) addressed growing concerns over Thai nationals amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

He confirmed that 39,500 Thai nationals are currently working in Israel—around 33,000 of whom are legally employed, while approximately 6,500 are undocumented.

Of those, 29,300 are employed in agriculture, 2,500 in construction, and 1,200 in other sectors.

In Iran, there are between 200 and 300 Thai nationals, both permanent and temporary residents. Among them, 39 are officially registered as workers, mostly based in Tehran and Isfahan.

So far, there have been no reports of injuries or danger to Thai citizens in either country.

“All Thai workers in Israel and Iran are currently safe. There have been no reports of injuries or fatalities. The Labour Ministry remains in contact with them and is monitoring the situation 24/7,” Pipat said.

To prepare for a possible evacuation, a special task force has been established at 16 locations across Israel. The fastest and most feasible evacuation route would be by land through the border into Jordan. Air evacuation is not an option at this time due to closed airspace, while sea evacuation is also being considered, although it would take more than 10 hours.

Pipat noted that a “war room” has been set up to monitor developments around the clock. Coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is ongoing to ensure immediate support when needed.

The Permanent Secretary of the Labour Ministry has confirmed that an emergency fund has been prepared. Thai nationals needing support can notify the ministry directly. If the allocated budget proves insufficient, additional funds will be reallocated.

“The initial evacuation goal is to move workers to a safe third country. If conditions permit, they may remain in Jordan without needing to return to Thailand. However, if workers wish to return, the Thai government will facilitate their journey,” said Pipat.

He added that the planned deployment of 2,000 Thai workers to Israel and Iran in June has been suspended.

The Labour Ministry has also developed a proactive emergency response plan. This includes:

    • Verifying the current location of all workers
    • Assessing high-risk areas based on embassy updates
    • Establishing safe zones in cooperation with employers
    • Training workers in equipment use and evacuation procedures
    • Opening 24-hour communication channels
    • Preparing land and air evacuation routes, particularly into Jordan, and coordinating with the Foreign Ministry for future air evacuations if feasible

Pipat said the ministry has also held consultations with labour counsellors in Tel Aviv and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to assess the situation on the ground. All workers are confirmed to be safe and have access to adequate food, water, and shelter, with strong cooperation from Israeli authorities.

“At this moment, violence is intensifying. It is impossible to predict when fighting will escalate, cease, or resume. Airstrikes remain a threat, so we urge all Thai nationals to stay in designated safe areas. If sirens sound, seek shelter immediately,” Pipat warned.

“I am deeply concerned. Please do not take selfies or record videos in dangerous areas. If you see rocket activity, remember that shrapnel can cause serious injuries.”

FM orders evacuation readiness as Thailand monitors Israel-Iran tensions

The Foreign Minister chaired a meeting to monitor the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, directing Thai embassies to prepare evacuation plans and urging all Thai nationals to stay informed.

Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, revealed after a high-level meeting with senior ministry officials that he had received an update from the Rapid Response Centre (RRC), which is now fully operational under the directive of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

The Minister reviewed recent developments in Israel and Iran, noting that the Royal Thai Embassy in Tehran has already set up a temporary shelter for Thai nationals in the area.

He emphasised the importance of all relevant agencies being fully prepared with contingency plans in case an evacuation becomes necessary. He also stressed the need for continuous monitoring and timely assessment of the situation to ensure swift and effective action.

Furthermore, the Minister urged Thai citizens residing in Israel, Iran, and neighbouring countries to remain updated through credible news sources and to download the Thai Consular mobile application, developed by the Department of Consular Affairs, to facilitate direct communication with Thai embassies.

Govt ready to evacuate Thai workers from Israel: Paetongtarn

The government is fully prepared to evacuate approximately 40,000 Thai workers from Israel if the conflict between Israel and Iran escalates, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting, Paetongtarn said she had instructed the Foreign Ministry, Labour Ministry, and the armed forces to coordinate preparations for a potential evacuation.

She said the Royal Thai Air Force has readied military aircraft for the evacuation process.

Special centre set up to support Thai workers

Paetongtarn added that the Labour Ministry and Foreign Ministry have jointly set up a special centre to assist Thai workers in Israel and closely monitor the situation.

“The centre is responsible for coordinating information between the Thai government and Thai workers in Israel,” she said.

She noted that, according to current registration data, there are nearly 40,000 Thai workers in Israel, and all necessary arrangements are in place should evacuation become necessary.

“The government has prepared all necessary measures to help Thai workers,” Paetongtarn said.

Evacuation plans triggered by June 12 airstrikes

Preparations began after the latest round of hostilities started on June 12, when Israel launched a large-scale air campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. The operation reportedly aimed to disable enrichment facilities at Natanz and Fordow, and eliminate senior Iranian generals and nuclear scientists.

Evacuation readiness depends on ground coordination

When asked about the criteria for launching evacuations, Paetongtarn noted that both the United States and China have already begun evacuating their citizens.

“But we’re assessing how prepared Thai nationals in Israel are,” she said. “We are ready, but coordination with our forward centre is key. Once the workers and officials on the ground are ready, the evacuation can begin immediately.”

She urged Thai workers in Israel to remain in close contact with the Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv to stay updated on evacuation plans.

Paetongtarn says Anutin never mentioned quitting coalition or going into opposition

PM Paetongtarn says Deputy PM Anutin never raised a threat to quit the coalition if the Interior Ministry is reassigned, and confirms no long-term Cabinet deals are in place.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Tuesday responded to questions about Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul following his meeting at Thai Khu Fah building on 16 June. She confirmed that the conversation focused solely on policy work and implementation issues, with no discussion of a potential Cabinet reshuffle.

“There are still some sticking points in the policies we’re driving forward, and I told him where we’d like to see more progress,” she said.

Asked whether this kind of long-term policy planning indicated that Anutin would remain in charge of the Interior Ministry for the foreseeable future, Paetongtarn responded: “It depends how you look at it. Every ministry needs to keep working regardless of whether the government or ministers change.”

When asked whether there were any preconditions regarding the duration of any minister’s tenure as part of the coalition agreement, the prime minister said: “There were no such conditions. We only discussed which party would oversee which ministry.”

On reports that Anutin had said Bhumjaithai would move to the opposition if the Interior Ministry portfolio was taken away, Paetongtarn responded: “No, not at all. He didn’t say anything like that yesterday—I didn’t hear it.”

When asked why the Pheu Thai Party wanted to reclaim the Interior Ministry, Paetongtarn declined to answer and walked away from the press podium.

Reporters noted that during the post-Cabinet press briefing today, Anutin was conspicuously absent. He usually stands alongside the prime minister for such events. His absence has fuelled speculation of growing tensions between the coalition’s main parties, particularly over the future of the Interior Ministry—a post currently held by Bhumjaithai.

Thai Finance Minister Kicks Off US Tax Talks Online, In-Person Meeting Looms

Bangkok begins formal discussions with Washington on trade and tax, with further proposals expected this week

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Pichai Chunhavajira, today confirmed that formal trade and tax negotiations with the United States have commenced, initially through online discussions.

Speaking at Government House this morning, Pichai stated, "We have now officially begun negotiations at a formal level, starting with online discussions. We expect to submit additional proposals this week. The negotiations have started, but some details should not be disclosed."

When pressed for a timeline by reporters, Pichai reiterated, "We've started talking, we've submitted our proposals, and we're refining the details. What we've submitted aligns with previously known principles."

He re-emphasised that the detailed proposals would be presented to the US within this week.

Asked directly about when he might travel for face-to-face discussions, Pichai remained tight-lipped, placing a finger to his lips and advising patience.

However, he later clarified that while the initial exchanges are online, "The next step will involve meeting in person." This suggests that in-person negotiations are on the horizon following the current digital phase.

Pheu Thai offers Bhumjaithai two ministerial positions to return Interior Ministry, demands decision within 48 hours

Pheu Thai proposes two ministerial roles to Bhumjaithai in exchange for Interior Ministry. Anutin given 48 hours to decide, with Cabinet reshuffle looming.

The ruling Pheu Thai Party has presented a proposal to Bhumjaithai Party, offering two ministerial positions, including Health Minister and Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, in exchange for returning the Interior Ministry to Pheu Thai. The decision needs to be made within 48 hours, by 3:00 pm on Thursday, June 19.

At 3:00 pm on June 17, Pheu Thai’s leadership officially communicated the proposal to Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, who leads Bhumjaithai. The proposal would see Bhumjaithai return the Interior Ministry and receive the Ministry of Public Health and another ministerial post under the Prime Minister’s Office instead.

If Bhumjaithai does not accept the proposal and refuses to return the Interior Ministry, Pheu Thai is prepared to proceed with a Cabinet reshuffle that excludes Bhumjaithai from the government.

According to Pheu Thai’s assessment, without Bhumjaithai, the coalition would have approximately 260 MPs, which is still more than half of the total seats in the House of Representatives. It’s also expected that some opposition MPs will support the government officially.

Meanwhile, United Thai Nation Party (UTN), which has faced internal divisions, has confirmed it will remain in the government coalition.

In response to the offer, Bhumjaithai is scheduled to announce its stance on June 18 at 11:00 am at the party's headquarters. According to high-ranking sources from Bhumjaithai, while Pheu Thai had previously hinted at exchanging the Commerce Minister and Health Minister positions for the Interior Ministry, this offer was never made officially.

Bhumjaithai has since been informed of the latest offer, which includes the positions of Health Minister and Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office. However, Bhumjaithai has made it clear that it will not accept any terms or exchange of ministries. The party has a firm stance: if it is to continue in the coalition, it demands a complete reallocation of ministries across all coalition partners.

Bhumjaithai argues that Pheu Thai seems focused on reshuffling ministries only within Bhumjaithai, without addressing other issues within the coalition. The party also pointed out that the UTN, despite almost splitting, has been allowed to remain untouched by Pheu Thai.

Sources have indicated that the offer of the Ministry of Public Health could stem from the fact that the position no longer aligns with former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's interests in ongoing legal matters. Even Somsak Thepsuthin, the current Health Minister, has found it challenging to resist pressures from the Medical Council. Regarding the Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, Bhumjaithai believes the position, which already has multiple holders, holds little value unless the Prime Minister assigns clear duties.

Thailand’s exports in May grow 18.4% with a value of 31.044bn US dollars

Thailand’s exports in May grew by 18.4%, reaching 31.044bn US dollars, marking the highest growth in 38 months.

Thailand’s exports in May rose by 18.4%, marking the highest growth in 38 months, with a value of 31.044 billion US dollars, or 1.025 trillion baht, Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said on Wednesday.

Pichai stated that the export growth rate was the highest in 38 months since March 2022, and the May export value was the highest monthly export value for Thailand in recent history.

When export goods related to oil, gold, and armaments were excluded, May's export growth was 20.3%, Pichai added. He said this demonstrated that global trade had begun to recover after the US delayed its retaliatory tariffs.

The export growth also indicated a rising demand for technological products in line with the expansion of the digital economy, leading to significant growth in exports of electronic products such as computers, hard drives, and printed circuit boards, Pichai said.

He also noted that exports of agricultural products, such as tapioca, durians, mangosteens, and rambutans, had recovered for the first time in five months.

During the first five months of this year, Thailand’s exports grew by 14.9% compared to the same period last year. When excluding the value of gold, oil, and armament products, the export value during the first five months grew by 13.9%.

Pichai said exports of industrial products grew by 22.9% in May, marking the 14th consecutive month of growth, led by computers, PCBs, and vehicles.

He added that exports of agricultural products grew by 6.8% in May after slowing down for several months.

The top ten export markets with growth in May were:

    • Hong Kong: 46.2%
    • Canada: 40.2%
    • US: 35.1%
    • China: 28.0%
    • Middle East: 22.8%
    • South Asia: 22.3%
    • Africa: 21.4%
    • CLMV: 20.8%
    • UK: 20%
    • Russia and CIS: 18.0%

Pichai also noted that during the past eight months of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s government, exports grew by 13.3%, generating revenue of 7.23 trillion baht or 215.798 billion US dollars for the country.

Prime Minister explains after Hun Sen releases private conversation clip

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held a press conference on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, confirming that a leaked audio clip was indeed a conversation between herself and Hun Sen, the President of the Cambodian Senate.

Hun Sen took to Facebook to confirm that the conversation on June 15 was a phone call with the Thai Prime Minister, with an interpreter present. He explained that the entire conversation had been recorded for transparency, to prevent the distortion of facts, and for internal use within Cambodia.

Hun Sen revealed that he had shared the recording with approximately 80 senior Cambodian officials, including members of the Senate, political party leaders, foreign affairs agencies, the military, and the border team. He also noted that after the conversation, Thai officials openly criticised him, calling him "unprofessional."

Furthermore, Hun Sen clarified that the public version of the audio only contained a 9-minute excerpt, and if Thailand wished to hear the full 17-minute version, he was ready to release it immediately. He emphasised that transparency was crucial in maintaining understanding between the two countries, particularly regarding the ongoing border dispute.

Paetongtarn confirmed that the conversation was genuine and that the main purpose of the discussion was informal talks aimed at easing tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border and fostering better understanding between the two nations.

The Prime Minister stressed that the conversation was purely diplomatic, aimed at resolving the situation peacefully and preventing escalation. She emphasised that the matter had no connection to domestic politics and reaffirmed that there was no conflict with the Thai military, with the government standing firm on maintaining national sovereignty.

Regarding the leaked audio, Paetongtarn remarked, "The conversation with Hun Sen was a technical attempt to calm the country. It was private and should not have been exposed. However, it is now clear that the intention behind the leak was to gain domestic popularity. From now on, I will no longer engage in private talks due to trust issues. I don’t want the Thai people to be misled or provoked within the country."

The Prime Minister revealed that she had learned from an interpreter that Hun Sen was angered by comments from the Thai Second Army Region Commander, following the release of a video earlier.

She explained that during their conversation, she reassured Hun Sen, acknowledging that since the two countries were at odds, it was understandable for the military commander to make such remarks. Paetongtarn told Hun Sen not to take it personally, emphasising that her comments were part of a private diplomatic exchange and should not have been made public, as they were negotiation tactics.

She further highlighted that her discussions were intended to maintain peace and uphold the country’s sovereignty for the greater benefit of the nation and its people. Paetongtarn added that in private talks, she often used familiar terms such as "uncle" and "nephew" with Hun Sen, a practice she also follows with colleagues in the Cabinet.

The Prime Minister continued, explaining that during their discussions, they addressed potential actions. However, she was uncertain about the military’s stance. Hun Sen suggested opening the border gate, to which Paetongtarn agreed, but she asked if they could do so simultaneously as a gesture of peace. Hun Sen disagreed, and Thailand could not accept this approach. Paetongtarn sought to make Hun Sen understand that Thailand had yet to take any action and questioned why Thailand should open the gate first. She requested time to consult with the Ministry of Defence and promised to provide a response the following day, after a meeting scheduled at Phitsanulok House.

Paetongtarn explained that, before the meeting at Phitsanulok House had even concluded, Hun Sen posted on Facebook stating that if Thailand did not open the border within 24 hours, Cambodia would close all border gates. This left her feeling that the situation was not in line with their previous discussion. She remained calm and attempted to understand what Cambodia truly wanted—what additional actions or negotiations were needed to reach a peaceful resolution without further escalation.

When asked about Thai society's focus on the phrase "the Second Army Region Commander is on the opposite side of her," Paetongtarn explained that her comments were intended to clarify the situation with Hun Sen, who had been upset by the Second Army Region Commander’s earlier remarks.

Regarding potential domestic issues, the Prime Minister emphasised that she did not want the Thai public to be misled. She described this as a tactic aimed at creating the impression that Thailand is in conflict, which was not the case. Her primary goal was to understand Hun Sen’s position and explore ways to peacefully resolve the border dispute, but Hun Sen refused to cooperate.

When asked if future talks would be possible, the Prime Minister paused before responding, stating that she was uncertain. She added that, personally, she does not seek to provoke or escalate tensions; otherwise, there would have been no private discussions.

On the relationship between the two families, the Prime Minister said she was unsure but would no longer engage in private talks due to trust issues. When asked whether she would need to clarify matters with the Second Army Region Commander regarding the leaked conversation, the Prime Minister explained that if she were truly opposed to the military, she wouldn’t have said, "Wait for the military’s response." She would have acted differently.

She clarified that after hearing the clip, she sought to understand Hun Sen’s frustration and immediately worked to de-escalate the situation. However, when the topic of opening the border was raised, the discussion shifted to more sensitive issues, including weapons. The Prime Minister reiterated that such private conversations between national leaders, especially former and current Prime Ministers, should never have been made public.

Paetongtarn also pointed out that Hun Sen's primary intention seemed to be boosting his domestic popularity, rather than focusing on the impact on bilateral relations.

She added that Hun Sen had mentioned his declining approval ratings, which might have influenced his actions. She expressed her hope that Hun Sen would regain popularity and be recognised globally for his leadership. However, she stressed that the purpose of their discussions was to foster peace, not to increase anyone’s popularity. She also clarified that she was not responsible for releasing the audio clip, and while she could not confirm whether it would boost Hun Sen’s popularity, she maintained that the ultimate goal was to achieve peace.

In response to the partial leak of the audio, the Prime Minister instructed the Minister of Defence to investigate the matter promptly, stressing that if any wrongdoing that could affect national security or diplomatic relations was found, legal actions would be taken. She also urged the media and the public to exercise caution when reporting on such matters to avoid harming national interests.

Thailand sets 1-month deadline to resolve Thai-Cambodian border issues with new operations centre

Prime Minister Paetongtarn sets up Special Operations Centre to manage Thai-Cambodian border issues, with Gen Natthapon Nakpanich appointed as director.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has issued an order to establish the Special Operations Centre for Thai-Cambodian Border Situations Management (SOC-TCBSM). The centre will be led by Deputy Defence Minister General Natthapon Nakpanich, who has been appointed as its director.

On June 17, Natthapon held the first meeting of the new Centre, setting the framework and working guidelines based on the operational model of the Covid-19 Situation Administration Centre (CCSA) under General Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The Centre appointed two spokespeople to handle daily updates and responses. Nikorndej Balankura, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will cover foreign affairs, while Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri, a senior expert from the Thai military and Deputy Spokesperson for the Royal Thai Armed Forces, will handle security matters. Both will provide updates in both Thai and English.

“SOC-TCBSM has been set up to drive and integrate the immediate issues at hand, while also tracking long-term efforts, such as the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meetings between Thailand and Cambodia, and the International Court of Justice (ICJ),” Natthapon said. “I confirm that the Centre should not exist for longer than a month, and we will work swiftly to resolve the situation.”

He added that the spokespersons will provide proactive communication on all issues, whether it be related to social media or daily statements from Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. “We aim to keep the public informed and prevent confusion,” he said.

The Centre will meet daily at 09:30 am and hold a press briefing at noon at the Naree Samosorn Building, with live coverage via NBT. For weekends, the team will be on standby, and meetings will be held online if urgent issues arise.

The working framework includes short-term integration and long-term support and recommendations, added Natthapo

Thai Embassy in Tehran clarifies evacuation advice for nationals amid rising tensions

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the Thai Embassy in Tehran only advised nationals to move to safer areas, not to evacuate, as tensions between Israel and Iran escalate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified on Wednesday, June 18, regarding reports that the Thai Embassy in Tehran had instructed Thai nationals to evacuate the city.

The Ministry explained that the embassy had advised Thai citizens to "leave the area," which means relocating from dangerous zones in Tehran to safer areas or shelters provided by the embassy, once it is feasible. This differs from the term "evacuate," which implies organising transportation to leave the country.

Currently, no Thai citizens have requested evacuation from Iran, though the embassy has prepared plans for assistance and continues to assess the situation and inquire about the intentions of Thai nationals.

Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa stated that the Ministry and embassies in Israel and Iran are closely monitoring the situation and providing updates as it develops. Reports indicate that the situation is worsening, posing increasing risks to the safety and security of citizens' lives and property. Other countries, such as the United States and China, have already advised their citizens to "leave the area" since June 17.

Minister Maris urged Thai citizens in Israel and Iran to consider leaving the areas as soon as it is safe to do so. Thai nationals in both countries can contact the following embassy hotlines:

    Israeli Embassy: +972 546 368150 and +972 503 673195

    Iranian Embassy: +98 912 159 5699 and +98 912 500 7933

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Call Centre: 02 572 8442 (24/7)

Since June 16, the Thai Embassy in Tehran has opened a temporary shelter in Amol, Mazandaran Province, northern Iran, a safe area far from military or nuclear sites. The shelter can accommodate up to 200 people, with 35 Thai nationals currently residing there.

Maris reassured that if the situation escalates further and evacuation becomes necessary, the Ministry will promptly inform Thai nationals. He urged all to stay updated with local government and embassy communications and to comply with regulations.

PM convenes urgent meeting of top brass to discuss Cambodian tensions

PM Paetongtarn calls urgent meeting with military top brass to discuss escalating Thai-Cambodian tensions.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Thursday called an urgent meeting of the military top brass to discuss the Thai-Cambodian situation, the government spokesman said.

Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said the meeting of the commanders-in-chief of the armed forces was held at Government House at 10:50 am.

The spokesman said the meeting was attended by Gen Songwit Noonpakdee, commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, and Gen Pana Klaewplodthuk, commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army.

Jirayu said the chiefs of the Royal Thai Navy and the Royal Thai Air Force were on foreign trips, so they assigned their representatives to attend the meeting.

Jirayu said the results of the meeting would be announced later.

The spokesman said the prime minister had a scheduled visit to observe the sufficiency economy course at the 904 Volunteers Under HM’s Patronage training school in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district at 1:50 pm.

Paetongtarn called the meeting following the worsening ties between Thailand and Cambodia after former Cambodian PM Hun Sen leaked an audio clip of a conversation between him and Paetongtarn, during which the Thai PM was heard blaming the commander of the Second Army Area for the deteriorating relations.

Phumtham: Pressure for PM to resign would benefit Cambodia

Phumtham warns pressure for PM to resign benefits Cambodia, assures military support to resolve conflict.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai stated on Thursday that the military fully supports the government in resolving conflicts with Cambodia and warned that any attempts to pressure Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra into resigning would benefit Cambodia.

    Urgent Meeting with Military Leaders
Phumtham made the remarks after an urgent meeting between the top military brass and Prime Minister Paetongtarn at Government House on Thursday morning. The meeting followed the release of a leaked audio clip by Cambodian strongman Hun Sen, in which the Thai PM was heard blaming the commander of the Second Army Area for escalating conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia.

    Military’s Support for the Government
Phumtham assured reporters that there were no conflicts between the government and the military. He confirmed that both entities were working together to defend Thailand’s territory. The top brass evaluated the ongoing conflict situation and discussed measures for handling Cambodia’s actions, with a focus on ensuring the safety of Thai citizens.

“All the necessary measures have been prepared, and the government has announced full support for military actions,” Phumtham said.

    External Threats and Political Stability
Phumtham emphasized that the military was focused on external threats to national security rather than internal political issues. The armed forces reassured Paetongtarn that they were ready to work under her leadership.

“The military is not concerned about domestic political matters and will leave it to political parties to handle,” Phumtham added. He reiterated that both the government and military would not tolerate any violations of Thai territory by Cambodia.

    Retaliation Against Cambodia
In response to Cambodia’s actions, Phumtham revealed that the Foreign Ministry had summoned the Cambodian ambassador to formally condemn the leaks. He explained that Thailand would retaliate in stages, from minor to more significant measures, while maintaining a peaceful stance to ensure international understanding.

“We will ensure the international community understands that Thailand is committed to peaceful resolution and is not the aggressor,” Phumtham said.

Pressure on PM to Resign and Cambodia’s Strategy
When asked about growing pressure on Paetongtarn to resign following the leaked conversation, Phumtham stated that Cambodia might be behind these efforts, hoping to exploit internal divisions in Thailand and weaken the country on the international stage.

“The government and the armed forces have discussed the situation and have agreed on the necessary measures,” Phumtham said. He noted that the situation could drag on, but Thailand was united in handling the matter.

    Military's Role in Politics
Phumtham also reassured the public that the military would not seize power, as the political landscape had changed.
“We will never intervene in politics; this era has passed,” he said.

    Government’s Stance on Protests

Regarding potential street protests, Phumtham said the government was not concerned and noted that some groups had been protesting outside government offices for several days. He added that the police had been instructed to handle protesters with leniency and avoid the use of force.

Phumtham also addressed concerns about Sondhi Limthongkul, the former yellow-shirt leader, joining the protests. He stated that the government would continue to explain the situation to the public and military to avoid escalation.

    Diplomatic Measures and Future Actions
Phumtham confirmed that if Hun Sen continued to escalate the situation via social media, the Foreign Ministry would respond in phases, using diplomatic measures step by step.

Paetongtarn digs her heels, calls for unity, blasts Hun Sen

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra today called on Thai people to unite in the face of what she described as “a threat to national security” following the leaked recording of her conversation with Cambodian strongman Hun Sen.

Speaking at a hastily-called press conference, she said she fully stands by the armed forces in the current border dispute with Cambodia.

She also apologized for what she described as misunderstanding arising from her private conversation with Hun Sen, the president of Cambodian Senate, during which she was heard criticizing Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, commander of the Second Army Region.

The general is in charge of security in the northeastern region bordering Cambodia and has been openly critical of Cambodia over its claims of sovereignty over disputed border areas with Thailand.

Paetongtarn said she has already clarified with the armed forces that her remark about the general was “a negotiating tactic” to find a peaceful way to end the ongoing border conflicts with Cambodia.

“What is happening is considered to be a threat to national security,” she said of the country’s confrontation with Cambodia.

“This is the time for Thai people to unite, not to quarrel,” she said.

She also criticized Hun Sen for what she called “his unacceptable conduct” by leaking the recording of their conversation which was supposed to be private.

She said the Foreign Ministry this morning summoned Cambodian Ambassador to Thailand Hun Saroeun to hand over a letter of protest.

Paetongtarn did not respond to calls for her to either resign or dissolve the House to take responsibility for what critics see as her subservience to Hun Sen during their conversation.

At one point during the conversation, Paetongtarn was heard pleading for sympathy from the Cambodian former prime minister, saying that the border dispute was most destabilizing to her government.

“Uncle Hun Sen, just tell me what you want and all can be arranged,” she said. The prime minister did not take any questions after making her statement.

Belgium trip cancelled as Paetongtarn focuses on domestic politics

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has cancelled her planned visit to Belgium from June 29 to July 4, as she focuses on managing the domestic political situation.

A source from the Government House revealed that due to the current political climate, Paetongtarn has adjusted her schedule for the final week of the month.

This includes postponing the official Cabinet meeting and government inspections in Phitsanulok province, originally scheduled for June 23-24. Furthermore, her official visit to Belgium has now been called off, with coordination already made with the Belgian government to notify them of the change.

The source added that beyond the escalating political tensions surrounding the Thai-Cambodian border issue and the leaked audio clip of a conversation between the Prime Minister and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, another key factor is the impending Cabinet reshuffle.

Paetongtarn must coordinate with the Pheu Thai Party and coalition partners over the allocation of ministerial positions. As a result, the Prime Minister decided to delay the trip to allow for greater political clarity.

PM to visit Chong Bok Pass

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is scheduled to visit Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani tomorrow (today), where she will visit the Chong Bok Pass and meet with the commander of the Second Army Region.

The visit will mark her first to the site where the fatal clash between Thai and Cambodian troops on May 28th triggered the current border tensions between the neighbouring nations.

She is also expected to meet, and possibly reconcile with Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, whom she labelled as being on the opposing side of her government over the border issue, in a leaked audio clip of her conversation with Cambodia’s strongman Hun Sen.

Lt Gen Boonsin has stated that he bears no grudge over the remarks by the prime minister, who has already called him to explain that it was just a political tactic.

Deputy Defence Minister: Leaked audio clip not a coincidence, calls for unity to protect Thailand's sovereignty

Deputy Defence Minister says leaked audio clip was part of a deliberate plan, calls for unity and urges "Team Thailand" to protect the nation’s sovereignty.

General Natthapon Nakpanich, Deputy Defence Minister and Director of the Special Operations Centre for Thai-Cambodian Border Situations Management (SOC-TCBSM), on Friday addressed the recent political crisis following the leak of a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Hun Sen, former Cambodian Prime Minister and President of the Cambodian Senate.

Natthapon explained that over the past 4-5 months, Thailand has faced a fragile and challenging situation along its Thai-Cambodian border. The tension has not only challenged the country’s sovereignty but has also tested the nation’s preparedness and unity. In response, the government has decided to establish the SOC-TCBSM, also known as “Team Thailand”, to handle this situation effectively.

“In the past, we have worked under diplomatic frameworks to resolve border issues, especially through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), a cooperative effort with Cambodia for over 26 years,” he said. “However, recent developments, including the release of the leaked audio clip, have escalated the tension. This was not a coincidence but part of a complex plan aimed at weakening Thailand. The leaked audio was not merely about diplomatic strategy; it was about ‘killing all the birds with one stone’. We will not allow them to succeed.”

In terms of politics, Natthapon preferred not to comment directly, leaving it to the appropriate political mechanisms. However, he reassured that the SOC-TCBSM was established to handle unforeseen events like the current crisis and will continue to operate effectively.

“We must focus on the people, on the border areas, and ask ourselves how we can bring peace, unity, and security to the nation. We must ensure that people can live their daily lives in peace as they have always done,” he said.

The Deputy Defence Minister called on all to unite and said that the government, through “Team Thailand”, would work towards short-term integration and long-term solutions, guided by principles of “caution, wisdom, and peace-building”. He stressed that the nation’s interests must remain paramount.

“We must work with respect for one another, discuss matters patiently, and stand firm on the principles of cooperation. We must remain united and not be swayed by provocations. Our ideological differences should not weaken our unity,” he said.

Natthapon concluded by expressing that, even if he is no longer in this position in the future, he will entrust his heart to those who are courageous enough to think, act, and protect the country with dignity.

“Even though one day I may not be in this position, I leave my heart with all of you, trusting in the hands of those who are brave enough to think, act, and protect this land with honour.”

Paetongtarn assures government focus on public welfare and national direction

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Friday ordered the Interior Ministry to fully ensure the safety of the public, instructing security forces to prepare personnel and weaponry in case of clashes.
At Government House in Bangkok, the Prime Minister chaired a meeting to oversee the assistance being provided to citizens in the Thai-Cambodian border provinces.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of the Interior, the Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA), and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

Governors from seven provinces — Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, Buriram, Trat, Chanthaburi, and Sa Kaeo — joined the meeting via video conference.

During the meeting, Paetongtarn emphasised the need for continued dedication to the people and the nation. She expressed her confidence that the agencies attending the meeting were focused on the welfare of the public and the country, stating that the government will provide direction on where Thailand will go next.

She also mentioned her discussions with the Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary regarding the construction of additional bunkers in Surin province, emphasising the importance of their quality. She urged governors to ensure that these bunkers would provide genuine protection for the public.

The Prime Minister noted that she had also spoken with security agencies about the need for sufficient personnel and updated equipment to ease public concerns.

"I want the military to ensure that we are always prepared. We seek peace and want to avoid conflict, but if unforeseen circumstances arise, we must be ready to protect the lives of thousands of soldiers stationed along the border," she said.

Paetongtarn reiterated that the government prioritises the safety and lives of the people. She urged governors, district chiefs, and local administrative leaders to adhere to the plan for protecting areas in the event of clashes, ensuring that hospitals and staff are fully prepared.

"Today, we have the Deputy Minister of the Interior here with us, and we must work together to ensure the strongest possible response. I promise that the government will not abandon any ministry. Every ministry plays a crucial role in benefiting the public, so let us remain focused on our goals and reassure everyone present," concluded Paetongtarn.

PM thanks military for dedication to Thai-Cambodian border security

Paetongtarn meets 2nd Army Region Chief in Ubon Ratchathani

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra smiled at 2nd Army Region Commander Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, who welcomed her at Wing 21 in Ubon Ratchathani province on Friday.
The Prime Minister's visit aimed to boost the morale of the Suranaree Task Force and monitor the progress of the security situation along the Thai-Cambodian border following a clash between Thai and Cambodian troops in the Chong Bok area on May 28.

Recently, a leaked audio clip emerged in which Paetongtarn discussed the Thai-Cambodian border with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, mentioning the role of the 2nd Army Region Commander. This triggered political turmoil within the Pheu Thai-led government.

Paetongtarn confirmed that the clip was authentic and later called Lt Gen Boonsin to clarify the situation and resolve any misunderstandings.

The 2nd Army Commander responded, stating, "I have no issues. I understand, and I bear no ill will. I am working for the benefit of the nation and the people." He also reiterated his understanding of the need to de-escalate tensions at the border.

On Thursday, the 2nd Army Region officially confirmed that its commander does not use any social media platforms and issued a warning regarding fake accounts impersonating him.

Regarding the Thai-Cambodian border situation, there has been some tension recently over issues such as border gate closures and encroachment. Lt Gen Boonsin has played a pivotal role in managing the situation and engaging in talks with Cambodian officials.

Thailand's political tensions will not affect US trade talks: Pichai

Thailand's political tensions will not impact trade and tariff negotiations with the United States, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira stated on Friday.

The rising political unrest, triggered by a leaked audio clip between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen regarding the Thai-Cambodian border dispute, has raised concerns. However, Pichai reassured that the ongoing negotiations would remain unaffected.

He confirmed that the Thai government had already presented an official proposal to the US, sticking to the five proposals previously submitted. However, he emphasised that the negotiations remain confidential.

"We have signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the US, so we cannot reveal the details or the schedule of the talks. We believe that international negotiations are rarely concluded easily and may require an extended period," he said.

Pichai also highlighted the urgent need for the approval of the 2026 budget, calling it a crucial factor in driving the economy forward. He stressed that it would contribute to international trade negotiations, which, although still undisclosed, are a significant step towards the overall recovery of Thailand's economy.

Following a meeting with listed companies to discuss the Jump+ programme, which promotes the value addition of listed companies, Pichai provided additional insights.

The programme aims to prepare entrepreneurs to understand market conditions, plan for challenges, and communicate objectives transparently with investors to ensure long-term investment confidence in Thailand.

Despite the stock market index being relatively low compared to the past, the capital market remains a crucial economic driver. Investors who focus on the long term and understand the economic structure still have opportunities for growth, Pichai said.

He added that the programme aligns with structural reforms in areas such as public infrastructure, tourism, energy, and laws related to investment, particularly foreign land ownership rights.

"Jump+ is designed to support small businesses that may lack the resources to hire consultants. It will guide them in their development over the next year, enabling a review of strategies to improve efficiency. Once implemented, companies must share their plans and results with investors," he explained.

Pichai noted that the Thai stock index is currently at a relatively low level compared to other countries and may decrease further due to global economic conditions. However, he encouraged investors to focus on companies that manage well in the medium to long term, suggesting they adopt a buy-and-hold approach, rather than short-term trading.

He also mentioned that several new regulations have been introduced to close the gap between large and small investors, as well as between foreign and domestic investors, in terms of transparency, information disclosure, and stock trading practices.

This includes measures against issues like naked short selling and penalties for improper investments.

Thai envoy recalled from Phnom Penh for consultations, ties not severed

Thailand recalls ambassador from Phnom Penh for official talks but affirms diplomatic ties with Cambodia remain unchanged amid audio clip row.

The Thai government has recalled Tull Traisorat, Ambassador to Phnom Penh, for official consultations, according to Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, amid rising tensions following the release of a controversial audio clip. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) clarified that this move does not signal a downgrading of diplomatic relations with Cambodia.

In a statement issued by the MFA’s Department of Information, the ministry explained that the ambassador was invited back for routine discussions and that this is a normal diplomatic procedure, not a severance of ties.

According to sources, Tull was recalled alone for internal consultations, while other embassy operations in Phnom Penh continue as usual. No changes have been made to the level of diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

The move follows an incident on June 19, when the Thai Foreign Ministry summoned the Cambodian Ambassador to Thailand to receive a formal protest note. This was in response to the release of an audio clip featuring a private conversation between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.

Department of Information Director-General Nikorndej Balankura stated that Thailand viewed the release as a serious breach of diplomatic norms and unacceptable conduct between sovereign states. He said the action undermined mutual trust and severely affected bilateral relations, as well as ongoing efforts to address disputes through established diplomatic and bilateral mechanisms.

Regardless of who holds the office, the prime minister of Thailand, as head of government, must be accorded respect and dignity in line with international diplomatic practice, he said.

The protest note was officially conveyed to the Cambodian side via diplomatic channels, and the Cambodian envoy was invited to the ministry to formally receive the letter, he added.

Defence Minister: Cambodia won’t invade, lacks jets to reach Bangkok

Minister of National Defence Tea Seiha has made it clear that Cambodia may not possess fighter jets or warships but has the capability to defend the country, including air defence systems, anti-tank guns and coastal defence weapons.

Speaking on the morning of June 20, he said Cambodia has collaborated with friendly partners to upgrade its defence capabilities, not to invade others, and emphasised that Cambodia does not have fighter jets capable of reaching Bangkok.

Thailand posts photos of their missiles, fighter jets, large artillery pieces and warships, and weapons for land, sea and air. What does Cambodia have? Let me clarify, Cambodia has no fighter jets or warships because Cambodia focuses only on defensive capabilities. We have air defence guns, anti-tank guns, and coastal defence guns,” he said.

“Cambodia has worked with some friendly partners to enhance our military capabilities solely for national defence, absolutely not to build up weapons for invading others,” he added.

Seiha’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border. Recently, the defence ministry noted that Thailand has increased activities such as deploying drones, digging trenches, mobilising weapons and support equipment, constructing infrastructure and increasing troop numbers along the border of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces.

The ministry stated that these actions pose a serious threat to the peace and security of both countries.

On June 19, a spokesperson for Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged that earthworks were being constructed, but claimed they were conducted within Thai territory.

Seiha emphasised that Cambodia does not want war with any country and has referred the border dispute with Thailand to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a peaceful resolution.

He noted that the ICJ’s decision may not guarantee territorial gains for either side, as it depends on the court’s findings. He added that the outcome from the ICJ would ensure peace and clarity regarding the border between the two nations.

He further stated that resolving the issue through a 2000 memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been impossible, and Thailand and Cambodia have not conducted joint border surveys since 2012 or 2013, primarily due to using different maps.

He also claimed that over the past decade, since bilateral talks through the Joint Boundary Commission stalled, Thailand has violated the memorandum 695 times, on a provisional basis.

“I say provisionally because there could be more, such as road construction and patrolling without notifying Cambodia,” he said.

PM orders urgent crackdown on scammers and cybercrime at Thai borders

Thailand intensifies nationwide crackdown on scammers, online crime, and cross-border syndicates, with new measures to follow PM's June 23 meeting.

Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub announced on Saturday (June 21) that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered the urgent implementation of a national policy to crack down on all forms of call centre scams, online fraud, and illegal gambling, which are now considered threats to national security.

Jirayu confirmed that the recent press briefing by Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Economy Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong on June 19 was a direct result of measures implemented earlier this month. These included adjustments to the opening and closure of border checkpoints between Thailand and Cambodia on June 7.

Since then, statistics show a significant decline in scam-related activity, providing greater protection for Thai citizens from criminal networks undermining national stability.

The government also referred to a recent United Nations report identifying Cambodia as a new global hub for cybercrime. The special report, titled "UN agency map reveals Cambodia as global scammer hub", indicated that Cambodia has overtaken Myanmar as the regional centre for call centre scam operations, based on findings by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Jirayu stated that, while Thailand’s western border with Myanmar has seen a substantial drop in illegal activity due to decisive operations—including cutting off electricity, water, and internet access to scam compounds—there are worrying signs that syndicates along the eastern border are adapting. He warned that Thai nationals who knowingly work for these criminal groups are effectively harming their own people.

“The government will not allow national security to be compromised or Thai citizens to be deceived any longer,” Jirayu said. “This issue is being treated as a national priority.”

On Monday (June 23), Prime Minister is set to convene a high-level meeting to address cross-border crime, with a focus on threats to national security such as drug trafficking, money laundering, cybercrime, human trafficking, and other forms of transnational crime along Thailand’s northern, southern, eastern, and western borders.

Jirayu added that some criminal groups have begun altering their methods after border closures were enforced. Intelligence reports suggest that Thai nationals previously crossing via border passes are now obtaining passports and flying to nearby Cambodian cities such as Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, where syndicates pick them up and return them to border zones to resume illegal activities.

“Following the Monday meeting, the government will announce new measures to combat transnational cybercrime and protect the Thai public,” Jirayu said.

Govt aids farmers hit by Cambodian ban on Thai fruit, veg

Govt teams up with Thailand Post to deliver fruit nationwide for free, helping farmers hit by Cambodia’s ban on Thai produce imports.

Sub Lt Jakkra Yodmanee, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, said on Saturday ( June 21) that Thailand is working to mitigate the impact of Cambodia’s ban on the import of Thai fruits and vegetables, following a meeting with provincial commerce offices in seven Thai provinces bordering Cambodia — Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Buri Ram, Surin, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat.

He said Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has prioritised urgent measures to support affected farmers and local businesses.

In particular, Thai mangosteen and durian from the eastern region — now entering the tail end of the harvest season — are being rapidly distributed through domestic retail channels.

The Department of Internal Trade and provincial commerce offices are working with major retailers, local stores, Thai Post, petrol stations, and even airlines to expand consumer access.

Thai consumers have also continued to show strong support by buying local fruit, he said.

At the local level, the Ministry has instructed all seven provincial commerce offices to closely monitor the cross-border trade situation and coordinate with security agencies and local businesses to assess developments and plan appropriate responses.

Crucially, in cases where small-scale vendors or villagers who sell local produce and goods have been affected by the sudden shift in trade dynamics, officials have been ordered to secure alternative sales spaces.

This includes coordination with provincial authorities, local governments, and retail partners to set up temporary or substitute markets where appropriate.

Jakkra assured the public that the Ministry of Commerce is fully committed to ensuring that Thai farmers and entrepreneurs can continue to earn a livelihood, with as little disruption as possible.

Deputy Government Spokesman Anukool Pruksanusak announced on Saturday that the Thai government has teamed up with Thailand Post to offer free nationwide delivery for farmers, enabling them to distribute their fruit efficiently through the company’s extensive logistics network.

The initiative aims to distribute at least 3,000 tonnes of key Thai fruits — including durian, mangosteen, longan, longkong, rambutan, and mango — through popular online platforms.

By leveraging digital sales, farmers will be able to connect directly with consumers across the country in a convenient and timely manner.

To support this effort, the Department of Internal Trade has prepared 238,000 pieces of packaging — including 188,000 DIT-branded 10-kg boxes and 50,000 five-kg baskets — which are being dispatched to provincial commerce offices nationwide. Farmers can collect them free of charge to help reduce distribution costs at every stage.

In addition, the Department will host a “Thai Fruits Festival 2025” in July to support seasonal produce from the South and North.

The event will feature renowned Thai fruits such as durian, mangosteen, rambutan, longkong, salak, champada, longan, lychee, and oranges, showcased in a modern format to stimulate consumer demand and expand market opportunities for local growers.

“This partnership with Thailand Post will ensure that farmers’ produce is delivered quickly, safely, and nationwide — particularly at a time when online fruit orders and gift deliveries are on the rise,” Anukool said. “The government is confident this support will offer concrete benefits to Thai farmers, not only as a short-term remedy but as a foundation for long-term income stability.”

Phumtham to become interior minister, Prasert labour minister: sources

Phumtham set to become interior minister and Prasert labour minister in upcoming Cabinet reshuffle, Pheu Thai sources reveal.

Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is expected to become the next interior minister, while Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong is tipped to take over as labour minister in the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle, Pheu Thai Party sources said on Sunday.

The sources shared the latest possible reshuffle list with The Nation ahead of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s meeting with coalition party leaders at the Rosewood Bangkok Hotel on Sunday afternoon.

According to the sources, Paetongtarn was expected to inform coalition leaders that, following the withdrawal of the Bhumjaithai Party last week, eight Cabinet seats were now vacant and would be redistributed among the remaining partners.

Coalition parties would be asked to promptly submit their nominees under the revised quotas. The Cabinet Secretariat would conduct background checks and vet the qualifications of the proposed ministers by Monday, before the new Cabinet list is submitted for royal endorsement.

Phumtham is expected to vacate the defence portfolio to take up the interior ministry post, replacing Anutin Charnvirakul, the Bhumjaithai Party leader who resigned last week.

Deputy Defence Minister Gen Natthapon Nakpanich would be promoted to defence minister, while Gen Sunai Praphuchanay, former commander of the Special Warfare Command, would assume the role of deputy defence minister, the sources said.

Prasert would become the new labour minister, with his Digital Economy and Society (DES) post handed to Chakkrapong Saengmanee, a former PM’s Office minister.

Sermsak Pongpanit, former tourism and sports minister, would be appointed deputy interior minister.

Meanwhile, the Kla Party would nominate Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn as agriculture minister and shift Naruemon Pinyosinwat from the agriculture portfolio to serve as minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.

From the Democrat Party, Deputy Public Health Minister Dej-it Khaothong would move to become a deputy interior minister, while Chaichana Dejdecho would be appointed as a new deputy public health minister under the party’s updated quota.

The sources also said that Jatuporn Burutpat, former permanent secretary at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, would become deputy commerce minister under the United Thai Nation Party’s new quota. Other UTNP ministerial positions would remain unchanged.

Thai Minimum Wage Hike Faces Standoff After Minister Resigns

A proposed 400-baht increase is in limbo as the Labour Ministry lacks a voice to present it to Cabinet, amid calls for a re-evaluation of the contentious decision

Plans to implement a 400-baht increase to Thailand's daily minimum wage on 1st July 2025 are facing significant uncertainty following the unexpected resignation of Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn as Labour Minister.

His departure has left a crucial void, raising doubts over who will formally propose the wage hike to the Cabinet next week.

On Friday, 21st June 2025, Attayut Leeyavanich, an employers' representative on the Tripartite Wage Committee, expressed his concerns.

"The Tripartite Committee has not yet discussed this specific issue," Attayut stated. "However, the standard procedure dictates that once our committee passes a resolution, it must be submitted to the Labour Minister, who then forwards it to the Cabinet for approval and official gazetting before it can become law."

He noted that with no Labour Minister in place now, he was unsure whether someone would propose this in the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, June 24th, or whether any Deputy Prime Minister would bring it up.

"I'm still awaiting clarity; it falls to the Permanent Secretary of the Labour Ministry, who chairs the Tripartite Committee," he added.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Anutin Charnvirakul, the Deputy Prime Minister previously overseeing the Labour Ministry, has also resigned.

Attayut indicated that they would await an announcement on who would be appointed as acting minister or which Deputy Prime Minister would assume oversight of the ministry.

He noted that if an acting minister is appointed by Tuesday's Cabinet meeting, the Tripartite Committee's resolution could potentially be submitted the following week.

Industry Bodies Seek Review of Controversial Decision

Adding to the uncertainty, Attayut revealed that the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Chamber of Commerce are reportedly preparing to submit a letter to the Tripartite Committee chairman, urging a reconsideration of the recent minimum wage increase.

This demand for a review is not a direct consequence of the ministerial vacancy, but rather a culmination of ongoing dissatisfaction.

"The request for a fresh review stems from the fact that this round of minimum wage considerations has seen continuous demands for reconsideration over the past two to three months," Attayut explained.

He cited instances where the Confederation of Labour Organisations had previously sought a review of the wage rate resolved in December 2024 and implemented on 1st January 2025.

This has led to what he described as an "abnormal" situation, with monthly calls for wage reviews, deviating from the usual annual process.

"Before the vote for the latest minimum wage increase, there was no proper study, no submission to the sub-committee for wage screening or the provincial wage sub-committees to conduct occupational reports," Attayut asserted. "It seems they simply acted on impulse. This is precisely why the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Chamber of Commerce wish to submit a request for a review."

Vote Draws Confusion Amidst Stagnant Economy

When pressed about the specifics of the contentious vote, Attayut confirmed that the latest Tripartite Committee resolution was not unanimous, with the employer's side ultimately outvoted.

He recounted that in May, a similar increase was proposed, but representatives from the Commerce Ministry and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) voted against it, arguing there were no significant changes to warrant another wage hike.

"Yet, in June, despite no significant changes whatsoever – the inflation rate was only 0.22% – the representatives from the Commerce Ministry and NESDC voted in favour, resulting in a 10-to-5 vote that passed the 400-baht wage increase," Attayut expressed his bewilderment. "I'm still puzzled as to why it passed, even though all conditions, including the economic situation, were the same as in May 2025, or even worse."

In a recent development, reports confirm that on Friday (June 20th) Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra signed an order assigning Suriya Juangroongruangkit, a Deputy Prime Minister, to oversee the Labour Ministry, potentially paving the way for the resolution to proceed.

Thailand Eyes Greater Share of Booming Global Halal Market Worth $3.1 Trillion by 2027

Commerce Ministry positions kingdom as key player in rapidly expanding sector driven by growing Muslim population and rising consumer spending

Thailand's Commerce Ministry is positioning the kingdom to capture a greater share of the rapidly expanding global halal food market, which is projected to reach $3.1 trillion by 2027, as the nation seeks to capitalise on what officials describe as a "golden opportunity".

The global halal market, once considered niche, has evolved into a mainstream sector driven by a burgeoning Muslim population and increasing per capita spending amongst Muslim consumers worldwide.

United Nations statistics for 2024 show Muslims account for 1.907 billion people, or 23.5% of the world's total population of 8.119 billion.

This figure is projected to surge to 2.761 billion by 2050, representing nearly 30% of humanity and underscoring the immense potential of the halal market.

According to Salaam Gateway, a leading Islamic economy research institute, the global halal product market was valued at $2.35 trillion in 2024.

Food and beverages dominate this expansive market, accounting for $1.38 trillion—nearly 59% of total halal market value. Other significant sectors include fashion, media and recreation, tourism, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

By 2027, halal food and beverages alone are expected to reach $1.89 trillion.

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, Director General of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office at the Commerce Ministry, highlighted Thailand's strong position in the sector.

In 2024, Thai food exports to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries reached $7.1313 billion, marking robust 6.3% growth.

"This solidifies Thailand's presence in the OIC market and signals a golden opportunity for Thai entrepreneurs to capitalise on surging global demand for halal products in 2025 and beyond," Poonpong said.

He emphasised that halal food's appeal extends beyond Muslim consumers due to its adherence to strict Islamic production principles, ensuring cleanliness and hygiene.

This perception of safety and quality is attracting a wider consumer base, fuelling continuous growth in demand, particularly within OIC nations.

Globally, halal food and beverage exports to OIC countries totalled $247.362 billion in 2024, up 6.9% from 2023. Whilst major exporters include Brazil, India, China, Turkey, and the United States, Thailand currently ranks as the 10th largest food exporter to the OIC market.

Key importers of halal food and beverages within the OIC include Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

For Thailand, halal food exports represent a crucial economic and trade strategy. Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia collectively form Thailand's largest markets, accounting for 68.5% of its OIC food exports. Key products include rice, tinned tuna, sugar, pet food, and seasonings.

Thailand maintains a competitive edge through its product quality, food processing capabilities, and credible halal certification system.

OIC countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, represent high-potential markets with substantial average per capita purchasing power and demand for internationally standardised halal food.

To strengthen its position and accelerate market expansion, Thailand must uphold its reputation as a producer of high-quality halal food, continuously develop product standards, and engage in proactive marketing within the OIC bloc.

Recommended measures include supporting entrepreneurs in product and packaging innovation, accelerating the adoption of international halal standards, fostering collaboration with halal authorities in OIC countries, and orchestrating export promotion activities in target markets.
Poonpong concluded that the future of the halal food market is bright, and Thailand possesses the potential to become a leading global producer and exporter of halal food.

This aligns with the government's "Kitchen of the World" policy, which prioritises ongoing development in quality, diversity, and innovation.

"Thai halal food products have significant potential for further growth within the OIC, not only in existing categories but also in new products addressing modern consumption trends, especially health foods and innovative items," Poonpong stated. "Thailand's strengths in raw materials, quality, innovation, and widely recognised certifications mean that if we aspire to be a food leader and the 'Kitchen of the World,' Thai entrepreneurs cannot afford to overlook halal food."

Paetongtarn says coalition partners still united behind government

PM Paetongtarn says coalition partners remain united behind her government to counter Cambodia tensions and ensure political stability.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced that all remaining partners in her Pheu Thai-led coalition government remain united in supporting her leadership, especially in addressing external threats from Cambodia.

Paetongtarn posted a photo of herself with the leaders and secretary-generals of the remaining coalition parties on her Facebook page, thanking them for reaffirming their commitment to her government.

The post came after she held a meeting with coalition leaders at the Rosewood Bangkok Hotel on Sunday afternoon to discuss the redistribution of Cabinet seats following the withdrawal of Bhumjaithai Party—the coalition's second-largest partner—last week.

Key coalition leaders appearing in the photo to show solidarity with Paetongtarn included:

    • Kla Tham Party leader Narumon Pinyosinwat
    • Democrat Party leader Chalermchai Sri-on
    • Prachachart Party leader Pol Col Tawee Sodsong
    • Chartthaipattana Party leader Varawut Silpa-archa
    • United Thai Nation Party leader Pirapan Salirathavibhaga

In her post, Paetongtarn declared that the country must move forward with unity among the remaining coalition partners in order to implement the government’s policies and address national challenges.

“I would like to thank the executive boards and members of all coalition partners for reaffirming their support for the government and for joining hands to create political stability—essential to addressing external national security threats and driving forward policy to solve problems for the people,” she wrote.

“Now that the government and the armed forces stand together in upholding democratic principles, fulfilling our duties under the constitution, and working collectively to strengthen unity within the coalition government, this will mark a key milestone in uniting the Thai people to navigate this sensitive situation with security and resolve—defending our sovereignty while preserving the pride of the nation and its people.”

“I believe no threat is greater than the unity of the Thai people. Our government will move forward with determination and dedication for the good of Thailand.”

Paetongtarn to continue premiership, taps military figure for defence minister

The government led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will continue its administration with plans to appoint a senior military officer to head the Defence Ministry.

Despite the withdrawal of the Bhumjaithai Party from the coalition last week, the remaining coalition partners reaffirmed their support for Paetongtarn, who also leads the Pheu Thai Party.

This show of unity came amid growing pressure for other parties to exit the coalition and calls for the prime minister to resign over a leaked audio clip of a conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen regarding the Thai-Cambodian border dispute.

On Sunday afternoon, Paetongtarn convened a meeting with leaders of the 11 remaining coalition parties at the Rosewood Bangkok Hotel to discuss a Cabinet reshuffle. Parties represented included United Thai Nation, Klatham, Democrat and Chartthaipattana.

Following over three hours of talks, Paetongtarn posted a group photo with coalition leaders on her Facebook page, with a message that read: "The country must move forward. We must unite to push forward policies and solve problems for the people."

“I would like to thank all executives and members of the coalition parties for their resolution and declaration of support for the government. Together, we aim to maintain political stability, respond to external threats to national security, and drive forward policies to solve the people’s problems.

“At a time when the government and the military share a common stance in upholding democracy, fulfilling constitutional duties, and reinforcing unity, the solidarity of the coalition parties will be a vital anchor to lead the Thai people through this sensitive period with stability and success—protecting our sovereignty and preserving the honour and dignity of the nation.

“I believe that no threat is greater than the unity of the Thai people. Our government will work tirelessly with full dedication for Thailand.”

According to Krungthep Turakij, the most closely watched Cabinet reshuffle involves the Defence Ministry, with Pheu Thai expected to nominate a high-ranking former military officer for the post.

Potential candidates include Gen Nattapol Nakpanit, Deputy Defence Minister; Gen Sunai Praphuchanay, former commander of the Special Warfare Command; and Gen Supot Malaniyom, former secretary-general of the National Security Council.

Current Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is expected to be shifted to the Interior Ministry.

Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong will reportedly move to the Labour Ministry, with Jakkapong Sangmanee, former minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, taking over at DES.

Also expected in the reshuffle is Sermsak Pongpanit, tipped to become Deputy Interior Minister.

A notable nomination is Yodchanan Wongsawat for Education Minister. He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a PhD in brainwave technology, having completed a dissertation on the use of brain signals to assist people with disabilities. He formerly taught biomedical engineering at Mahidol University.

Klatham Party is expected to reshuffle its ministers, with Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn moving to Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister and Narumon Pinyosinwat taking the post of Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.

Anudith Nakornthap, who recently joined Klatham, is likely to be named Deputy Education Minister.

Within the Democrat Party, Dech-it Khaothong, currently Deputy Public Health Minister, is set to become Deputy Interior Minister, while Chaichana Dechdecho is expected to take over as Deputy Public Health Minister.

The United Thai Nation Party’s ministerial quota remains unchanged, though Jatuporn Buruspat, permanent secretary for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, is tipped to become Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister.

Meanwhile, a group of 18 MPs from United Thai Nation has proposed Suchart Chomklin, currently Deputy Commerce Minister, to be promoted to full Commerce Minister.

Pheu Thai leaders have acknowledged the proposal and are reportedly considering further ministerial swaps, including assigning Prasert to the Education Ministry instead.

The new Cabinet line-up is expected to be submitted to the Secretariat of the Cabinet for qualification screening on Monday (June 23).

Paetongtarn holds urgent talks on Thai-Cambodian border tensions

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called a meeting with security and economic agencies on Monday to discuss the ongoing border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

The prime minister arrived for work at the Thai Khu Fah Building inside Government House at 9.12am, according to reports.

Ahead of her arrival, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Deputy Defence Minister Gen Nattapol Nakpanit, and Chief of Defence Forces Gen Songwit Noonpackdee were already present.

The meeting was reportedly convened to coordinate between national security and economic agencies following a series of border checkpoint closures and reopenings, which have disrupted Thai exports to Cambodia.

The government is now weighing possible responses and seeking to mitigate any economic fallout.

A national security source said any escalation in countermeasures would need careful coordination with economic agencies to assess feasibility and potential impact. The source stressed that national security remains the top priority but noted the importance of minimising economic damage.

At the same time, the source revealed that security agencies are also grappling with the growing conflict between Israel and Iran. The Royal Thai Armed Forces have been instructed to prepare for the potential evacuation of Thai nationals should the situation escalate.

The military has placed its aircraft on standby and can mobilise within one hour if an evacuation order is issued, the source said.
