^ ...and then becomes over capacity when trying to use the free version...how typical is that.

You say it writes nice code with comments. It wrote some simple code in Ada for me but it was not industry standard, failed miserably with some more technical real time code production in Ada.

Good to see they will adopt a version for educational purposes, with the required safety caveats. Apparently users will be able to tell if the service was used for essays or thesis presented as the students own work.

    See how effective that is?

That's a bit niche. Are you running it on your Babbage Difference Engine?

An they would have been right if the printing press developed intelligence and perhaps sentiency.
as it is,after high hopes by Johannes and a good start it just peter out, creating things such as the National Enquirer, and the NY Post.

Google on Monday unveiled a new chatbot tool dubbed “Bard” in an apparent bid to compete with the viral success of ChatGPT.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and parent company Alphabet, said in a blog post that Bard will be opened up to “trusted testers” starting Monday, with plans to make it available to the public “in the coming weeks.”
Like ChatGPT, which was released publicly in late November by AI research company OpenAI, Bard is built on a large language model. These models are trained on vast troves of data online in order to generate compelling responses to user prompts.

don't know if this is jackson pollocks but meet splatGPT

Robot artist uses AI to paint in style of the great masters

The robot named Frida - after Frida Kahlo - can paint a specific image, copy a photograph or work in the style of another artist

Possessing little artistic ability may no longer be a barrier to creating great art, after scientists designed a robot that can paint your ideas in reality.

Carnegie Mellon University has developed an artificially intelligent robotic arm which will paint on command once given an idea.

Similar to how ChatGPT generates text in a chosen style, users can direct the robot to paint a specific image, copy a photograph or work in the style of another artist.

The robot is named Frida - after Frida Kahlo - which also stands for Framework and Robotics Initiative for Developing Arts.

“Frida is a robotic painting system, but Frida is not an artist,” said doctoral student Peter Schaldenbrand, of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who helped develop the robot.

“It is not generating the ideas to communicate. It is a system that an artist could collaborate with. The artist can specify high-level goals for Frida and then it can execute them.

He added: “There’s this one painting of a frog ballerina that I think turned out really nicely. It is really silly and fun, and I think the surprise of what it generated based on my input was really fun to see.”

Frida has been trained on massive datasets that pair text and images scraped from the internet, before AI systems crunch the data to generate a new image which it can then paint.

Once Frida has been given a concept to work with, the robot uses machine learning to create a simulation of the final painting, and then develops a plan on how to achieve it using brush strokes.

It also uses machine learning to evaluate its progress as it works. Every so often, the robot uses an overhead camera to capture an image of the painting, and refines its plan if needed.

The team describe the final paintings as “impressionistic” and “whimsical” which intriguingly lack the precision expected of robots.

Researchers say they are struggling to improve Frida’s artistic ability, and admit that there is room for improvement in what it composes in simulation compared with the end result on canvas.

However even if the programme does improve, the team do not think artists are in danger of being replaced by artificially intelligent robots.

“People wonder if Frida is going to take artists’ jobs, but the main goal of the Frida project is quite the opposite. We want to really promote human creativity through Frida,” said Dr Jean Oh, a research professor at the Robotics Institute.

“For instance, I personally wanted to be an artist. Now, I can actually collaborate with Frida to express my ideas in painting.”

Dr James McCann, assistant professor at the Robotics Institute added: “Frida is a project exploring the intersection of human and robotic creativity.

“Frida is using the kind of AI models that have been developed to do things like caption images and understand scene content and applying it to this artistic generative problem.”

Microsoft unveils new Bing with ChatGPT powers

Microsoft has announced a new version of its search engine Bing, which incorporates the latest in artificial intelligence.

The overhaul deploys OpenAI's ChatGPT technology, which has taken the world by storm since its launch last year.

The move is by far the biggest threat Google has seen to its dominance in web search - and marks the beginning of an AI arms race between the companies.

"The race starts today," Microsoft boss Satya Nadella said.

Developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, ChatGPT uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like responses to search requests.

Mr Nadella said he thought it was poised to change the nature of online search - and interactions with many other software.

"This technology will reshape pretty much every software category that we know," he said.

Bing will now respond to search queries with more detailed answers - not just links to websites.

Users are also able to chat with the bot to better tailor their queries. More contextual answers will be added on the right hand side of a search page.

The new Bing search engine will be live right away - with a limited number of searches for each person.

The announcement comes a day after Google revealed details of its own new chatbot, Bard.

Both companies are scrambling to get their products to market.

In a note to investors after the announcement, analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities said he thought that Microsoft's investment would "massively boost" the firm's ability to compete.

"This is just the first step on the AI front ... as [the] AI arms race takes place among Big Tech," he said.

Microsoft, an early backer of San Francisco-based OpenAI, has been investing billions in artificial intelligence.

Last month it announced it was extending its collaboration with OpenAI in a "multiyear, multibillion dollar investment".

It has since announced a new premium tier of Microsoft Teams - its messaging software - that will feature ChatGPT, including a feature that automatically generates notes and highlights of meetings.

Microsoft said Bing will use OpenAI technology that is even more advanced than the ChatGPT technology unveiled last year. The powers will also be incorporated into its Edge web browser.

Analysts say ChatGPT - which has been used by students to pass exams and tests - has the potential to be incredibly disruptive to multiple professions, including journalism.

But it has been criticised for confidently giving answers that are wrong. It also works on datasets that are generally scraped from 2021 or earlier - so many of its answers can feel outdated.

    Deep Dream Generator

    AI art generator.
You tell it what you want, and it produces art work for you.
You can upload a picture for it to use as a base, or just let it do its own thing.

It does occasionally do some weird things though.... it just put an extra ear on this creation..

People are using it for all sorts of things.

The general consensus is that you use it to create rough drafts, then check and tweak.

So I asked it, (were you a Dr Zeus fan?)
Create a draft patent application that shows thing1 will interact with thing2 to escape from a box. Once released from the box, it will allow them to fly kites.
    And it replied:
    Draft Patent Application
Title: Interaction between Thing1 and Thing2 for Escaping from a Box and Flying Kites

    Applicant: [Your name and address]

    Abstract:
A method of using Thing1 and Thing2 to escape from a box and fly kites. The invention includes the interaction between Thing1 and Thing2 which allows them to escape from the box and fly kites.

    Description:
The present invention relates to a method of using Thing1 and Thing2 to escape from a box and fly kites. The method includes the interaction between Thing1 and Thing2, which allows them to escape from the box and fly kites.

Thing1 is a device that is capable of generating a specific force, while Thing2 is a device that is capable of receiving the force generated by Thing1. When Thing1 and Thing2 interact with each other, they create a force that is sufficient to escape from the box.

Once they escape from the box, Thing1 and Thing2 can then be used to fly kites. Thing1 generates a lift force that allows the kite to fly, while Thing2 controls the direction and altitude of the kite.

The invention provides a simple and effective way of escaping from a box and flying kites. The interaction between Thing1 and Thing2 is easy to operate, and the devices can be used by people of all ages.

    Claims:

A method of using Thing1 and Thing2 to escape from a box, comprising the steps of:
    a. Interacting Thing1 and Thing2,
    b. Generating a force with Thing1,
    c. Receiving the force with Thing2,
    d. Escaping from the box using the force generated by Thing1 and received by Thing2.

The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:
    a. Generating a lift force with Thing1,
    b. Controlling the direction and altitude of the kite with Thing2,
    c. Flying the kite.

    Conclusion:
The present invention provides a method of using Thing1 and Thing2 to escape from a box and fly kites. The interaction between Thing1 and Thing2 is easy to operate and can be used by people of all ages. The invention provides a simple and effective way of escaping from a box and flying kites.

I wouldn't recommend trying it on the chinky version though.

Alibaba says it will launch its own ChatGPT-style tool, becoming the latest tech giant to jump on the chatbot bandwagon.
The Chinese behemoth said it was testing an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot internally. It did not share details of when it would launch or what the application would be called.
