Men's health is in crisis. Movember moustache charity raises issues

    Movember - About Us

Men’s health is in crisis. Men are dying on average 5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.

A growing number of men – around 10.8M globally – are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. And across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 69% of all suicides.

Movember is uniquely placed to address this crisis on a global scale. We fund groundbreaking projects all over the world, engaging men where they are to understand what works best and accelerate change.

Of course women have many health issues too but everywhere regardless of race regime or climate they seem to outlive men.

IMHO get a regular checkup, keep fit , eat healthily, don't smoke and ride with protection!

Disgusting discrimination against women, almost as bad as Black lives matter.

It should be followed by DeFember.

I was contracting at a NZ govt agency last November, didn't enter their Movember contest after I was told two women from payroll were first and second the year before.
    Quite believable.

Extensive research conducted on the subject revealed Men die sooner than their wives simply because they want to.
As any married man would attest , after decades of marriage who among us does not wish for a quick death?

I always thought men had a shorter lifespan than women because of the risks they take. They are soldiers, firemen and cops, they fight and are daredevils on motorbikes and in cars while women mostly avoid risky behavior like that.

These are excellent points as ever Misskit

The genes inherited from our ancient ancestors surely have some part in human behaviour.
While equality of opportunity and even outcome or social justice are desireable we cannot ignore DNA and that males are on average larger, stronger and consume more.
As to risk taking other than childbirth I agree.

While a very few are in hazardous professions, sport and "showing off " perhaps to impress "The ladies"

Anyone who has observed small children in groups soon observe assertive behaviour from small boys and horse play as soldiers cowboys and Indians etc, or modern digital equivalents of shoot em up games , also little girls are given toys like mini kitchens while boys get plastic ray guns etc, there is of course a parental and societal input.

I think the campaign is just one part of encouraging all to live long as healthily as possible.

This should of course include all the unique women's health needs, scans, smears, counselling, perinatal support that while free in wealthy democracies less so in developing nations where sons are needed to be produced where manual labour necessary to support poor lives.

May I add for anyone at large in Northern Thailand my wife is possibly the worst driver still unbanned bar one....Me

Plenty of research on the topic

    e.g.
University of Chicago Press Journals: Cookie absent

Across all cultures, men are more physically aggressive than women. Although some forms of aggression are more common in females (e.g., infanticide; relational aggression), males are more likely to commit a physical or armed assault against another person, especially other males (Archer
2004; Campbell 1999), making this one of the largest gender differences in psychology.

I'd suggest it has a lot to do with diet/alcohol, but I have no evidence of this

It has just occured to me another factor that may skew the statistics.

I have zero empirical sources just family observation.

Old guys who have been cared for all their lives by mums gfs wives daughters don't last long as widowers whereas self sufficicent old ladies may live on for years , state pensions, life assurance or a new man may enhance such trends?

I may be wrong according to her indoors I usually am.

Crisis? I thought male life expectancy has generally been increasing in developed countries over many years.
