Democrats maintain control of Senate, NBC News projects, defeating many Trump-backed Republicans

The picture in the Senate became clear late Saturday after Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada narrowly defeated Republican Adam Laxalt to win re-election, putting her party over the threshold, NBC News projected Saturday.

"Thank you, Nevada!" Cortez Masto said in a tweet Saturday evening after its two most populous counties, Clark and Washoe, finished counting mail-in ballots.

Biden can now count on partners in the Senate to confirm his judicial and administration appointments, even if his legislative agenda ends up effectively blocked because of a Republican takeover of the House.

You just posting nonsense? Or do you actually believe it? Because it’s not true. I would think most everyone in his cabinet believes. And new nominees will be approved, who also believe.

Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Pérez has defeated Joe Kent, a far-right Republican endorsed by former President Trump, delivering a major upset in Washington's 3rd Congressional District, the Associated Press reported Saturday night.

Why it matters: Gluesenkamp Pérez's win will turn the district in southwest Washington blue for the first time in 12 years, giving Democrats an important pickup as they fight to limit GOP gains in Congress.

    • It also comes as another blow to Trump, whose handpicked candidates have lost or struggled in many races nationwide.

The latest: Gluesenkamp Pérez, who lives in rural Skamania County and owns an auto shop in Portland, was leading Kent by a narrow margin on Saturday afternoon, according to the Washington secretary of state's office.

    • The AP called the race on the fifth day of vote counting in the all-mail election.

The big picture: Glusenkamp Pérez will succeed U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, who lost her primary earlier this year. Herrera Beutler was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Catch up quick: On the campaign trail, Gluesenkamp Pérez, an auto repair shop owner, repeatedly argued that Kent held extreme views that would make it difficult for him to accomplish much in Congress.

Abortion was another flashpoint in the race, with Gluesenkamp Pérez arguing that Kent's anti-abortion stancewould endanger women.

    • The candidates also clashed over immigration, with Kent wanting to end the issuance of work visas to immigrants and Gluesenkamp Pérez calling the idea "economic sabotage."

Flashback: After the 2020 election, Kent was a plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the results in Washington state, alleging without evidence that votes were flipped, removed or added. A federal judge dismissed that claim last year.

What they're saying: In a statement Saturday, Gluesenkamp Pérez said that "Joe Kent's candidacy gave voice to some of the darkest impulses in our politics," including "xenophobia and authoritarianism."

    • "Southwest Washington looked them straight in the eye and said no — not here, not now, not ever," she said.
    • Kent, meanwhile, proclaimed on Twitter that "this is not over." He said his team is continuing to work to "cure" ballots that were rejected because of a signature mismatch or other issue.
    • "What the media says is irrelevant ... The fight goes on while the talking heads talk," he tweeted.
    • Kent has previously said he will accept the results of the Nov. 8 election.

Do I think the coal baron senator will block any nominee who is against fossil fuels?

    Of course I fucking do.

Democratic state Rep. Yadira Caraveo made history as Colorado’s first Latina elected to Congress, according to NBC News projections.

With 97% of the votes counted, Caraveo won 48.4% of the votes and Republican state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer won 47.7%, according to the NBC News Decision Desk.

Caraveo will represent the newly drawn 8th Congressional District, north of Denver, which has the largest percentage of Hispanics in the state, at 39%.

Caraveo, a pediatrician and the daughter of Mexican immigrants, was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2018. During her time at the Statehouse, she has focused on health care policy, voting and reproductive rights, among other issues, according to her campaign website.

She also backed a Colorado bill codifying abortion access in the state earlier this year.

The first Hispanic member of Congress representing Colorado, John Salazar, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2004 and served until 2011.

The crux of the matter is the nomination of Sarah Bloom Raskin, a former deputy Treasury secretary and a governor of the Federal Reserve Board during the Obama administration, who is facing opposition in a divided Senate.
Raskin’s stance on environmental issues, including her view on the transition away from fossil fuels, are colliding with soaring gas prices and a renewed debate about oil independence in the face of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“Her previous public statements have failed to satisfactorily address my concerns about the critical importance of financing an all-of-the-above energy policy to meet our nation’s critical energy needs,” Manchin said in a statement on Monday announcing his opposition to Raskin’s nomination.

    You’re wrong

EPA Administrator Michael Regan would not promote fossil fuels over clean energy.

    ___________

    From the Fox news website

    • Republican Party 'is dead' after major midterm election losses in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Nevada: Hawley

Republicans need to rebrand and "build something new" after they failed to retake a majority in the U.S. Senate or meet general expectations for the 2022 midterm elections, one of the party’s younger members said.

On Saturday, shortly after Democrats picked up a key victory in Nevada, where incumbent Democrat Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto defeated Republican challenger Adam Laxalt, Republican Sen. Josh Hawley took to Twitter to say the Republican Party "is dead."

"The old party is dead. Time to bury it. Build something new," Hawley wrote.

The 42-year-old Missouri Republican is among a younger group of Senate Republicans, who have expressed reservations for or straight opposition to current Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, 82.

Hawley has been vocally critical of the Republican Party after they failed to win in Pennsylvania, where Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz fell short of defeating Senator-elect John Fetterman, and in Arizona, where Sen. Mark Kelly fended off Republican hopeful Blake Masters.

"You can’t expect independent voters to vote Republican unless you give them an agenda they care about," Hawley added in a tweet on Friday.

The day before, Hawley said the Republican machine "lost big" in the midterms and said their legislative priorities were not being supported by the American people.

"Washington Republicanism lost big Tuesday night. When your ‘agenda’ is cave to Big Pharma on insulin, cave to Schumer on gun control & Green New Deal (‘infrastructure’), and tease changes to Social Security and Medicare, you lose," he wrote.

He also suggested Republicans failed to present their own ideas and initiatives to voters and only pointed to failures of the Democratic Party.

"Not enough to say the other side is no good. Have to offer an actual agenda," he wrote.

    ____________

Exit polls show 72 percent of women ages 18-29 voted for Democrats in House races nationwide. In a pivotal Pennsylvania Senate race, 77 percent of young women voted for embattled Democrat John Fetterman, helping to secure his victory.

WTF are you droning on about now? Who mentioned him?

I simply said the Democrats don't have a true senate majority when the two people that have been fucking them up since 2020 are still in office.

They both vote the GOP way most of the time, especially when it comes to climate-related issues, because Manchin is in the pocket of the coal industry.

You are demonstrating skidmark levels of idiocy.

Perhaps you need to educate yourself as to what a fucking scumbag Manchin is. Suggest you start with the link below.

As the pivotal vote in an evenly split Senate, Mr. Manchin has blocked legislation that would speed the country’s transition to wind, solar and other clean energy and away from coal, oil and gas, the burning of which is dangerously heating the planet.

    No surprise Harry.

Coal mining and coal-fired electric power generated approximately $13.9 billion in total economic activity in the state of West Virginia. For context, total economic output for the state (GDP) was around $77 billion.

Coal mining and coal-fired electric power generation supported nearly 33,000 jobs in West Virginia.

Coal mining and coal-fired electric power generation provided around $2.8 billion in employee compensation. Coal mining posts the highest average annual wages among all other industries in West Virginia.

Coal mining and coal-fired electric power generated nearly $611 million in select state and local tax revenue for West Virginia and its local governments.

West Virginia coal exports consistently make up a large share of U.S. coal exports – nearly one-third of the nation’s total economic export value.

You’re wrong now you’re just digging a hole. Everyone understands Manchin doesn’t side with cutting coal in his state, but that doesn’t mean he’ll “block any nominee who is against fossil fuels” as provided in my link/s.

    I think you're bit naive.

Sarah Bloom Raskin withdrew her name from consideration for the seven-member Federal Reserve board on Tuesday, citing “relentless attacks by special interests.”
Raskin’s decision to withdraw her candidacy comes one day after moderate Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said he opposed the nomination, effectively killing Raskin’s chances at confirmation.
    Precedent.

I'm surprised we're not seeing more whining from the nutter in yellow.

    However, she did tweet:

And this does sort of illustrate the mental defectives that would vote for her:
