I have seen both sides of Catholicism. Like other faiths, there are always a few good people who I see as being poorly led, but very well intentioned.
My first ex wife was a catholic, and she is still riddled with guilt because of it.
Its taken me some time to understand and appreciate atheism. I’m a slow learner.
I don't really buy this Catholic Guilt cliche.
Why would Catholics feel more guilty about any given transgression than members of any other Christian denomination?
Catholics do confession as a ritual which other denominations do not. But why would confession make you feel more guilty?
I would imagine that internal feelings of guilt would be stronger in an individual who has not owned up to their sins to whatever deity they seek to propitiate, and sought forgiveness and penance.
We had great fun at confession as kids since the church had a hi-tech confessional which had a green light outside to indicate it was vacant. When somebody went in to the booth to confess and knelt on the kneeling pad the light would change to red.
At school we would all go to the church to confess once a term as a group lined up in the pews. Once called upon to enter the booth the game was to bounce up and down on the kneeling pad to get the light to flash green and red and green again much to the amusement of one's fellow classmates. The teacher could not admonish you until you got out since confession is a private sacrament.
The confession in Godfather Part III was one of the great scenes from the trilogy.
It’s not about confession, it’s about original sin. All people, according to Catholic doctrine are born sinful. In other words everyone is guilty until they confess their sins and embrace the Catholic god or burn in the fires or hell forever.
This doctrine then created the problem of poor little babies who died prematurely or during birth. They were sinful and therefore could not go to heaven.
Thus the catholics invented purgatory, a half way house between heaven and hell, where relatives could pray (or buy indulgences - there’s another genius invention) until the poor little sinful, guilty babies could have their sins forgiven and ascend to heaven.

would never defend the church, they dont need my help
similar to martial arts, its about the practitioner, not the system in my opinion
in my fisrt year at university i lived with 2 jewish guys (out of 5 of us). one was a really nice guy, one was a bell end. not sure religion was anything to do with it

All religions have relics of doctrine that have been relegated to the embarrassing cupboard of antiquity.
I went to Catholic primary and secondary schools and Mass every Sunday 40 years ago. I do not recall any teacher or priest ever making reference to the admittedly very odd doctrine of original sin.
Purgatory was certainly a thing but it was marketed to us as a compromise between being roasted for all eternity and going straight to the heavenly pearlies. i.e. you get punished for whatever sins you indulged in but forgiveness will eventually be yours.
It does vaguely appeal to my primal primate instinct for justice and vengeance at a certain level. A bit like Buddhist Karma but dealt out in the afterlife rather than the next life.

Catholiscism invented Limbo, this was where all children went if they died prior to Baptism. Limbo was a part of Hell, just not so bad.
Original sin, and therefore Catholic guilt and the infalliblity of the pope as God's representative on earth underpin the entire basis of Catholicism.
Limbo or purgatory are the same thing, and have been quietly passed aside along with the indulgences of the. Middle ages that helped create Church wealth.
Nope they are different and purgatory still exists.

Listen very carefully dumbo.
I believe in free will. (Second time you have been told).
I am an Atheist. (Second or third time you have been told).
Given free will is a choice for those who are sufficiently educated, I will be the one who decides if you deserve any empathy, and how much you get. This is not your choice, it’s mine. You are too immature to draw such conclusions, let alone understand the consequences .
When a young man’s balls drop, and his voice deepens, is usually the end of adolescence, and the start of growing up. I’m not convinced you have got that far yet.
Stupid boy.
