I think Gove will be emboldened to go after other parts of KK mini-budget and Truss has as much spine as a caterpillar to stop him.

    and here we are....

Kwasi Kwarteng's remaining package of £43bn in tax cuts is expected to be paid for by a squeeze on public spending, and senior Tories have been speaking out.

The Prime Minister has so far refused to confirm whether benefits will be raised in line with soaring inflation - something Boris Johnson committed to.

If not, it would mean some of the poorest households could face a real-terms cut in their income.

Aside from coverage the coverage in the papers, three former cabinet ministers have all spoken out.

Michael Gove said he would need "a lot of persuading" to stop benefits from rising in line with inflation.

Former Housing Secretary Esther McVey says it would be a "huge mistake" not to give a cost of living increase to benefit payments.

Former work and pensions secretary Damian Green says that a freeze or cut in benefits would not get through the Commons.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/live/uk-politics-63114183

and more, can we sign you up for increasing benefits then

Already this morning the former Work and Pensions Secretary Damian Green has said that the government would "probably not" get any plan to limit benefit rises to rises in earnings rather than rises in prices through parliament.

And now - and this is quite something - a sitting cabinet minister has also spelt out her view publicly.

Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons, and just a matter of months ago a rival of Liz Truss's for the party leadership, has set out her views on Times Radio.

"I've always supported, whether it's pensions, whether it's our welfare system, keeping pace with inflation. We are not trying to help people with one hand and take away with another," she said.

This is open revolt - cabinet ministers are meant to be bound by collective responsibility.

Not this cabinet, not now - and it's an illustration of the prime minister's diminished authority.

They have been squeezing that for years. My UK relatives all have issues with reduced public services. No easy wins there.

KK is now having to bring forward the OBR report findings too, he's having that bad a week he'll come out later to tell us its not Weds tomorrow. Chipperfields would struggle to put on a better show than this, the only surprise is that the news clips of the conference don't have Benny Hill music running in the background.

Everyone is blaming Truss for this retarded economic plan. Anyone from the political establishment would have used the same plan. Kweer Starmer. Anyone.

Instead of sobering up , they chose to drink more. And it has been that way for a long time. From 2009 onwards , the whole developed world chose to print money instead of allowing the business cycle to function. So it is a sunk cost. When covid hit we went from hard liquor to homemade moonshine.

Trouble at mill with backbenchers talking about Truss getting the flush and the colonial won't be far behind...

A former cabinet minister has told the News Agents podcast’s Jon Sopel that Liz Truss “has unleashed hell on this country”.

Sopel says the language being used by senior Tories about the PM is like nothing he has seen before.

Kwarteng says he is ‘not going anywhere’

The chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, said his “total focus is on delivering on the mini-budget” in response to speculation about a U-turn on the measures.

Kwarteng said he is “not going anywhere” and refused to rule out any changes in the future. He acknowledged that there was “some turbulence” after the mini-budget but said it’s a “very dicey situation globally”.

Speaking from an International Monetary Fund summit, he said:

I speak to Number 10, I speak to the prime minister all the time - and we are totally focused on delivering the growth plan.

Asked whether Liz Truss will be prime minister next week and whether he will remain chancellor, Kwarteng replied:

Absolutely 100%, I’m not going anywhere.

    all change.....again?

Liz Truss news - live: Kwarteng flies back to UK as Tories ‘plot to replace PM

Kwasi Kwarteng has cut short his visit to the US for crisis talks over the mini-Budget amid rumours Truss’s government is on the brink of a U-turn over corporation tax cuts.

The chancellor has to flown back to the UK to hold discussions with Liz Truss and Conservative MPs, leaving behind a meeting of international finance ministers in Washington.

Ms Truss is set to tear up further elements of Kwasi Kwarteng’s fiscal proposal, including a reversal of the proposed corporation tax cuts – a key pledge of her leadership election campaign.

It comes as senior Conservatives are reportedly holding talks about the possibility of replacing the prime minister with a joint ticket of former leadership candidates Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt.

Another MP told The Times that the supporters of Mr Sunak, Ms Mordaunt and Ms Truss need to sit down to work through the candidate. “It’s either Rishi as prime minister with Penny as his deputy and foreign secretary or Penny as prime minister with Rishi as chancellor,” they said.

    British politics at its finest.

So, after developing a system of voting which ignores the majority of the parliamentary party, they have foisted upon themselves another deluded, dysfunctional sociopath who has appointed as her right hand man her former fuck buddy with whom she has developed an economic theory that has the somewhat bizarre distinction of being universally condemned by anyone who can count to three.

Truss and her Ghanaian shagger should/will/must reverse their insane policies quickly or will be booted out by 1922 committee working in conjunction with the Sunak/Mordaunt caucus excluding the depredations of the fucking senile right wing grass roots membership that got them into this mess in the first place.

Brexit’s dragon teeth are indeed springing up everywhere and are, happily, tearing the Tories apart.

Back in England I have enjoyed the benefit of watching this shit show that had its first act begin on 23rd June 2016 as a fucking tragedy but now has fallen into a farce. Nevertheless, what is quite satisfying about it all is the inescapable fact that the folk who voted for BoJo which in turn gave us Truss are all pretty much fucked.

But the wounds are quite grievous and the entire economy is handicapped by the stupidity of Brexit that has seen the labour market shrink to a degree that most sectors of the service industries, agriculture and health are now starved of resources.

The contraction of GDP growth was an immediate consequence but combined with the external shocks of covid and increasing energy costs it is apparent that public finances are in a parlous state.

Many pubs and restaurants in my neck of the woods are either approaching bankruptcy or have shut up shop. Councils have patched up roads rather than relaying them, grass verges are unkempt and hedges are overgrown obstructing pavements. Most folk are in denial as they grapple with the concept that interest rates anchored at 2% was never a permanent economic feature and are now facing insolvency.

If a country ever deserved its fate it is brokendownbrexitedEngerlandia and its unholy alliance of their supporters combined from the ranks of the stupid, the deluded, the right wing bigoted, the northern dross and the eternally ignorant.

It is to them we must salute for making Truss and her Ghanaian ape possible.

    You simply couldn’t write it.

Leaked document says 2,000 men allegedly assaulted 1,200 German women on New Year’s Eve

    By Rick Noack

LONDON — At first, there was complete silence from officials. As rumors spread on social media, police had nothing to say about allegations of mass sexual assaults and other crimes carried out on New Year's Eve in the German city of Cologne. It was only days later that officials reported that hundreds of women were victims of assault in Cologne, Hamburg and other German cities.

But numbers that are now emerging are likely to shock a country still coming to terms with what happened in Cologne more than half a year ago. According to a leaked police document, published by Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper and broadcasters NDR and WDR, the previous estimates have to be dramatically revised — upward.

Why it took half a year for the full extent of the New Year’s Eve assaults in Germany to be known

Authorities now think that on New Year's Eve, more than 1,200 women were sexually assaulted in various German cities, including more than 600 in Cologne and about 400 in Hamburg.More than 2,000 men were allegedly involved, and 120 suspects — about half of them foreign nationals who had only recently arrived in Germany — have been identified.

Only four have been convicted, but more trials are underway.

On Thursday, a court in Cologne sentenced two men in the New Year's Eve assaults. Hussein A., a 21-year-old Iraqi, and Hassan T., a 26-year-old Algerian, were handed suspended one-year sentences. Both arrived in Germany in the past two years, a court spokesman said. He declined to specify whether the two had sought asylum.

This stupitidty masked as gilt/generosity for German mass murderers many of whom lived untouched in both hales of GErmany for decades has resulted in an ascendant AfD who may never gain teh Bundestag but having recently visited Gotha Jena Gorlitz, Schandau and Dresden they have plenty of support and votes in some of the Whietest Saxon places .

Germany elections: In Saxony, the far-right AfD wields power | News | Al Jazeera
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/2019_Saxony_state_election.svg

The irony that van der Leyen and Merkel have failed to make streets safe for German women and suspended sentances, here they would be in IDF then deported at their families expense or possibly rot.

I am certain German ladies are not happy with this groper's charter.
An economic policy that may lead to power cuts is an utter failure as was Merkel's Ostpolitik.
It was obvious to all that Putin was a dictator after Chechnya Beslan Ossetia and Crimea in 2014 time to wake up and realize the German government enabled by cash and stupitidty this adventure. Nordstream yet another mi step as was short changing NATO so that Germans could own second homes while Yanks and Poms paid for their nuclear shield .

    Oh Hatty nicht diese Tone

There's breaking news on the BBC that Kwasi Kwarteng has gone as Chancellor. Surely this government can't survive this?

I think she was advised Hunt for "A" Chancellor, I am amazed he accepted such a poisoned chalice.

This weekend will be his baptism of fire.
I imagine he'll be begging Bailey to bail him out with continued blalnk cheque papering until confidence returns to the markets.

Only the USA can endlessly print fiat so long as oil and other commodities are mainly or exclusively priced in dollars.

US rates are forecast to rise to and UK and EU will have no choice but to follow to some extent in a timely manner to avoid difference arbitrage.

I cannot see how someone so blighted as Truss can last the year out.
I may well be wrong, I usually am but I foresee a unified challenge once the Tory back bench '1922 ctte select a sole torchbearer be it Sunak Johnson Mordaunt or other....

At present a leadership contest is not allowed within 12 months but the 22 itself can change it own rules

    The Bank's
Monetary Policy Committee has a devolved responsibility for managing monetary policy.

The Treasury has reserve powers to give orders to the committee "if they are required in the public interest and by extreme economic circumstances", but such orders must be endorsed by Parliament within 28 days.

    In addition, the Bank's
Financial Policy Committee was set up in 2011 as a macroprudential regulator to oversee the UK's financial sector.
