Some mixed reactions, a little less polarised than with our expat Europhiles or the Beeb. The proof of the pudding and all that.....

'The Iron Weathercock': World reacts to Truss win

Global leaders have been sending their congratulations to Liz Truss - but in the international media, there have been snarkier remarks, too.

"She has gone to see the Queen," said Russian television presenter Ivan Trushkin. "If she [the Queen] recognises her of course."

In France, meanwhile, she has been branded not the Iron Lady - which was former UK PM Margaret Thatcher's nickname - but the Iron Weathercock.

This is a reference to Ms Truss's changing views on the UK leaving the European Union - she went from opponent before the 2016 referendum, to supporter afterwards, saying in July that "some of the portents of doom didn't happen". It's believed the term was first coined in Les Echos in July - but has since caught on among some commentators.

Like Les Echos, Italy's Corriere della Sera compared Truss to Thatcher - but described the new leader's speeches as more "robotic".

The first leader to congratulate publicly Ms Truss was German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

"In these challenging times," he wrote in English, London and Berlin would carry on cooperating as "partners and friends".

Warm words also came from EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen - but not without an apparent reference to the Brexit-related Northern Ireland protocol.

"I look forward to a constructive relationship, in full respect of our agreements," she said in a tweet.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Liz Truss the "very best", Poland's Mateusz Morawiecki said he was "very, very pleased" by her commitment to Ukraine, and the Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin said he looked forward to working with Britain's new PM.

As expected, the reaction from Russia has been more negative, with presenters on Gazprom-owned NTV describing Truss's election as a "catastrophe" for the UK.

Russia's foreign ministry, which has previously been highly dismissive of Liz Truss, is yet to react formally to the news. When it does - don't expect much love lost.

In February, Moscow's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov compared meeting her with "a conversation between someone deaf and someone who is mute."

However, Ms Truss's win was welcomed by some in Russia. Leonid Volkov, chief of staff for jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny, said it was "excellent news".

"In the Kremlin they were cracking open the champagne when Johnson resigned, but there are no grounds for supposing that Truss will be a softer touch," he wrote on Twitter (in Russian).

China is also yet to officially respond to the news - but prominent Chinese journalists offered a similarly pessimistic view of the UK's future under Truss.

"Truss will likely be one of Britain's most mediocre prime ministers," tweeted Hu Xijin, a commentator for the Chinese Communist Party-affiliated Global Times.

"Truss has the will to be Britain's "new iron lady", but she may not have Thatcher's fate."

Congrats Liz, now lets see if you can make less of a mess of it than Camoron, May or Boris.

With Blojo it seemed the bar couldn't get any lower, watch this space.

Some call it fiscal loosening , others incontinence.

As politicians pose, large electric users face ruin, pubs clubs restaurants, ceramics, Tires, Bakers, Malls, engineering, that have barely scraped through the Covid19 nightmare and have few if any reserves.

Many well loved well managed small firms may become insolvent failing immediate remedies.

It appears the favoured difficult choice will be more government borrowing at a time when the price of money is rising.

It does make sense for the debt to be cheaper government debt passed on to the grandchildren than small business owners paying distressed pricing to banks.

You always know when a small business is in crisis when it is using the owners credit card , rather than retained profits or low cost long term overdraft .

Comedian guest on LK's new Sunday show Joe Lycett of course reminded us it'll all be right on the night.

My view is that each of these PMs has inherited a country that was made more messy by his/her predecessor.

I still blame Jeremy Corbyn for turning the Labour Party into an unelectable and ineffective opposition. Karmer appears still to be avoiding a fight for fear of winning it before the country is truly on its knees. Useless, the lot of them. Anyway, we are where we are.

Liz deserves a chance to start digging the UK out of a hole instead of digging it deeper. Despite having as much charisma as a wet dishcloth she has the job for now and she must have some qualities to have survived in the swamp of parliamentary politics. Time for her to show us all what she can do.

^^ The government could start with a Windfall tax on the energy companies and use the money to help those in need over the winter. That is, as per similar proposals in France and Germany and I expect throughout the rest of the EU.

^ Liz has already started to dig her grave...

It's also time to get the migrant and refugee problem under control. Separate the two for a start. I'd like to see some clearing stations in France and Belgium, along the coast, to help migrants and refugees. Stop stalling with the applications, making excuses all the time and start processing.

    Which one?

Centrica are the only major player involved in both abstraction, delivery and power gen. The other global cos can only be taxed on UK profits which aren't large within their portfolio.

EDF is making its profit from the UK as France sets tariff caps, perhaps we should do the same given the froggie cvnts will leave us with the decom bill

Wind is now the cheapest power source in the UK but the market pricing structure does not reflect that, Gas as the UK's major source of heat is the problem.

    No, the consituancy cabal.

Similar to the NaGastan system, it has a different name - The Electoral College.

    United States Electoral College

"A total of 538 electors form the Electoral College. Each elector casts one vote following the general election. The candidate who gets 270 votes or more wins. The newly elected President and Vice President are then inaugurated on January 20th."

Who selects the Electoral College electors?

The citizens of NaGastan, the citizens of the NaGastan states?

    NO,

"Each state and the District of Columbia appoints electors pursuant to the methods described by its legislature,"

One presumes all of the "legislators" have the same, "rules based systems".

United States Electoral College - Wikipedia

    • The president is elected on basis of universal, equal, and direct suffrage through secret ballots.

    Who selects the Russian President?

    The citizens of Russia.

Allegedly the conservative party members, 172,437, chose the new PM.
Allegedly there are 67,000,000 UK citizens.

    Less than 0.3%

    Representative?

"Until William Hague involved the membership in deciding who was Leader it was MPs in Parliament who chose the Party Leader and that made things fast and constitutional."

Which also represented the citizen's choice of their, by GE vote, MP.

One wonders how long before she loses the confidence of parliament.

More information on the Conservative Party membership "rules".

Can non-UK citizens vote in the contest?

"The Conservative Party does not require its members to be British citizens, or to live in the UK.

Conservative Party supporters who live abroad are able to become party members either by applying for membership through a local Conservative association in the UK, or by becoming a member of Conservatives Abroad by joining the Cities of London and Westminster Conservative Association as an overseas member.

The Conservatives Abroad website states that by doing this “you are entitled to all the benefits of party membership, including participation in the Conservative Policy Forum, attendance at party conferences and a vote in the election of the party leader.”

It also specifies that “you do not have to be a voter or a UK citizen” to join Conservatives Abroad.

This means that it does appear to be possible for people"

    1. Who are not British citizens and

    2. Do not live in the UK
, and so would not be eligible to vote in a UK general election, to be eligible to vote in the upcoming Conservative leadership contest,

    3. Provided they became a member on or before 3 June. They can be eligible to vote in the upcoming Conservative leadership contest

This means it is not possible for non-UK citizens living abroad to influence the outcome of the vote by joining the party the day prior to the leadership contest was called."

Who can vote in the Conservative leadership contest? - Full Fact
    Membership FAQs

One wonders if there was any substantial increase in recent CP membership numbers.

Ohoh if that really is true, that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

On the topic of the new PM, I really couldn't give a toss, no one can unwind the mess this country is in because of the current conditioning of its people.
