I should imagine there will be a few more of those if she gets in, in the meantime she's looking at a healthy lead of Sunak..

Truss campaign bounces back after embarrassing U-turn

Liz Truss has bounced back from an embarrassing U-turn to revitalise her Tory leadership campaign with a key endorsement and a series of polls that shows her well in front of her rival.

A new survey by the influential website ConservativeHome put the foreign secretary 32 points ahead of Rishi Sunak in the battle for Downing Street.

Crucially, it was carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday, as Ms Truss was being forced to ditch plans to cut public sector pay outside London in the face of a revolt by Tory MPs.

The result is similar to a YouGov poll of party members, which found a 34-point gap in favour of Ms Truss.

She also secured the support of former chancellor Sajid Javid, who warned that his friend Mr Sunak’s economic plans would lead Britain “sleepwalking into a high-tax, low-growth” economy.

and that has probably sealed his fate, and likely his career in the party - he'll be deemed toxic come general election time.

Tory leadership: I took money out of deprived urban areas says Sunak

A clip has emerged of ex-Chancellor Rishi Sunak saying he diverted public money from "deprived urban areas".

In a video the New Statesman has obtained, the Tory leadership candidate tells an audience in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, he wanted to ensure "areas like this" got the funding they deserved.

Allies say he was referring to changing "outdated" rules to better reflect need in rural areas and towns.

Labour said the leadership race was revealing the Tories' "true colours".

The party's shadow levelling up secretary Lisa Nandy said: "It's scandalous that Rishi Sunak is openly boasting that he fixed the rules to funnel taxpayers' money to prosperous Tory shires."

Ms Nandy has written to Levelling Up Secretary Greg Clark asking him to "urgently investigate" the changes made by Mr Sunak to funding formulas

IMHO, it's about time prosperous shires were funded a little more, especially since they are the ones paying a lot of that "taxpayer's money". When I was in Cheltenham last month I saw a lot of roads that look like they hadn't been resurfaced since I was living there in the 1970's.

75,000 Brits vow to stop paying their energy bills

The UK government has slammed the ‘Don’t Pay’ campaign as “highly irresponsible”

"As energy prices in the UK are set to reach record highs, an anonymous group called ‘Don’t Pay UK’ has launched a campaign calling on 1 million Brits to stop paying their energy bills on October 1, when prices are expected to jump once again.

Campaign members say that at least 75,000 people have so far pledged to cancel their direct debits for gas and electricity in protest of escalating costs. The UK government is now slamming the campaign as “highly irresponsible,” as reported by The Independent on Thursday.

“This is highly irresponsible messaging, which ultimately will only push up prices for everyone else and affect personal credit ratings,” a government spokesperson was quoted as saying by the outlet.

“While no government can control global gas prices, we are providing £37bn of help for households including the £400 discount on energy bills, and £1,200 of direct support for the most vulnerable households to help with the cost of living.”

The government’s energy price cap, which is set by regulator Ofgem, is predicted to rise above £3,000 ($3,618) on October 1, a nearly 65% increase. Energy costs already rose by 54% earlier this year.

Don’t Pay UK estimates that around 6.3 million UK households will be thrown into fuel poverty by winter, with tens of millions of homes experiencing “fuel stress,” meaning they will spend more than 10% of their income on energy bills alone.

The government has explained the rising energy costs as being caused by increased global demand, the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine.

However, record profits posted by energy companies like British Gas owner Centrica have sparked public uproar and accusations that providers are cashing in on the crisis.

“Our politicians and the oil and gas corporations have designed an energy system that only channels money and profits upwards, no matter the human cost,” a spokesperson for Don’t Pay said, adding that the record profits of energy companies are unacceptable.

“If the government and energy companies refuse to act then ordinary working people will. Together we will collectively enforce a fair price and the government and oil and gas giants will have to sort it out amongst themselves.”

It appears the Tory governments' self-imposed sanctions have had no effect on prices.

    The Tory government delivers?.

UK faces long recession and deepest plunge in living standards on record, Bank of England warns

Country to enter recession this year and economy on course to shrink for five straight quarters

    Ben Chapman1 day ago

"Britain will plunge into a year-long recession this autumn in which households will be hit by the deepest fall in living standards on record, the Bank of England has warned.

In one of its bleakest ever assessments of UK economic prospects, the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) said inflation will now peak at 13.3 per cent in the final three months of this year as average energy bills treble from £1,200 in 2021 to £3,500 by October.

The economy is now forecast to shrink in five consecutive quarters for the first time since the global financial crash of 2008.

The inflation forecast was up sharply from the 9.4 per cent predicted just three months ago, with prices now on track to continue rising rapidly throughout 2023.

It means the cost of living crisis will continue throughout next year and only begin to ease in 2024, according to the Bank’s latest forecasts. Real household incomes are expected to decline by around 5 per cent, on average, over two years – the deepest fall since records began in 1960.

The dire figures will cause concern for whoever becomes the next prime minister.

Liz Truss has pledged to slash taxes by billions in a bid to win over Conservative Party members, while Rishi Sunak has attacked the plan as being fiscally irresponsible.

Neither candidate has laid out detailed plans for how they would support families struggling through a rapidly worsening cost of living crisis.

Joseph Rowntree Foundation chief economist Rebecca McDonald said: “We already know 7 million low-income families had to sacrifice food, heating, even showers, this year because they couldn’t afford them.

“While the government might have taken a break from acting on the cost of living emergency, these families can’t take a holiday from the year of financial fear.

“They will be wondering why further urgent solutions needed to shore up family finances ahead of the winter are not yet being put in place.”

Labour’s shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves, said: “This is further proof that the Conservatives have lost control of the economy, with skyrocketing inflation set to continue, while mortgage and borrowing rates continue to rise.

“As families and pensioners worry about how they’re going to pay their bills, the Tory leadership candidates are touring the country announcing unworkable policies that will do nothing to help people get through this crisis.”

Experts said that energy costs could rise further still in January, with Investec predicting bills for the average household will now hit £4,210 in January, when regulator Ofgem revises its price cap.

The MPC warned that there was “exceptionally large” risk around its latest projections, and the situation could deteriorate further if gas prices move higher still.

Analysts believe that scenario is increasingly likely after Russia cut back supplies to Europe last month and governments across the continent began to ration supplies.

Even after the economy begins to grow, further pain lies in store, with unemployment set to climb from 3.8 per cent to 6.3 per cent in 2025.

Despite the bleak outlook, the Bank’s nine-member MPC voted eight-to-one in favour of hiking interest rates by 0.5 percentage points to 1.75 per cent – the highest since January 2009.
Overall, the economy is expected to shrink by 2.1 per cent, meaning the recession will be of comparable scale to those of the early 1990s and 1980s, the Bank said.

When the country emerges from recession in 2024, the Bank expects growth to remain close to zero throughout the following year.

The massive increase in inflation will also hammer the public finances, adding billions to government debt and to interest payments on bonds that are indexed to inflation.
Andrew Bailey, the Bank’s governor, defended the rate hike, arguing that persistent inflation would be “even worse” if interest rates were not increased and that lower-income households would be hardest hit."

I wonder what the government can cut back on to save a few billion pounds.

Just been having a "Zoom" chat with my daughter in the UK, she is becoming concerned.

Of the two articles I posted above, one is published by Russia's RT - World, the other by a UK source, The Independent.

No CPC notice of a small, country north of France. I can't remember when I read anything about UK in Global Times.

Any comment on the two article's contents?

It is hard to believe their level of diplomatic acumen has not risen above kindergarten level. As you say they are so clueless they dont see how most of the world is laughing at their juvenile behaviour. They are the laughing stock of the diplomatic world. I saw an interview by Australian Stan Grant of a presenter from CGTN I thought she was going to cry as she talked of the "salt that had been rubbed into the bleeding wound" of an independant Taiwan by Pelosi.

They have all adjusted to the problems of the last few years quite well.

All pretty good thanks, no intentions of moving on elsewhere.

He married an american lady, who he met at his UK university, got married and moved there a few years ago. A baby is due pretty soon.

Have The BBC asked this question to the PM hopefuls?

"What is the sterling value of armaments sent to Ukraine, plus the costs of surveillance flights, plus the costs of training 20,000 Ukrainian troops for 3 months each? And how are we paying for it?"

Has any UK media asked for and answer to the question?

Ukraine had 8 years to comply with its commitments, as specified in the Minsk agreements.

It's answer was to bomb, kill and terrorise, daily, its citizens in the East

It was trained, sent weapons for those years by NATO countries and surrendered its sovereignty to the 16%.

Russia, France and Germany had many top level meetings with Ukraine, to ensure the Minsk Agreements were adhered to but Ukraine, France and Germany failed to meet their commitments as defined in the Minsk agreements

Russia, recognising, yet another danger on its western boarder, offered a diplomatic solution to Ukraine's masters, NaGastan and other NATO counties.

They refused to accept the offer of talks.

Early February, Ukraine started a war and attacked two eastern Ukraine oblasts with unprecedented shelling.

The two up until then Ukraine's Oblasts then exited Ukraine and became their own countries.

Russia recognised the two new countries. As previously, Kosovo has done and was recognised by some countries.

The two new countries requested an agreement of security from Russia.

Russia recognised the two new countries and signed an agreement of security support, and began its SMO.

Russia, with the two new countries agreement, initiated diplomatic talks with Ukraine who after a number of meetings withdrew their previously agreed positions. Or was told to break off the diplomatic meetings.

    Russia continues with it's SMO.

Today, Ukraine itself can rejoin the diplomatic route. Have discussions with two new sovereign countries and Russian diplomatic personnel and a settlement agreed. The agreement can be signed by the two Presidents and life moves on, peacefully.

Ukraine has yet to provide any indication that rather than see their country at peace it prefers to send their citizens to their deaths, and their population to exist in other countries.

Ukraine's war with the ex oblasts, is for the Ukrainians, by government decree and/or citizens voting, to decide their countries destiny.

Not the wavering 16%, who will fight to the last Ukrainian and scuttle back to their Lal La lands.

The last statement by Uraines "leader":

"The war will finish when Crimea is returned to Ukraine"
